Swift Temper was far enough ahead of her in the DelCap so that I could shoot both horses comfortably. Today, they reversed the situation. Boy, did they!

I love a shot like that.

I don't know why I have resisted using my 300mm lens on a regular basis. For big days, I usually use it on my D200 and put the 70-200 on my D300 ...
but my 70-200 has been giving me soft images and I've had to send it into Nikon a couple of times. So this summer, I decided to use the 300mm as much as I can and even though it's the f/4 and not the ultra expensive f/2.8 (no thanks), on the D300 it works just as well. The only drawback is you can get caught on the wrong horse if you can't see the infield screen or hear the call ... as I did a week ago at Laurel. I was 100% on the wrong horse because I was shooting head on on the All Along turf course and the perspective is wicked. I missed an ad, but now I know not to use that lens for a finish on that particular course for the 5 1/2f races.
I've had the lens for years and I've certainly used it a lot, but I'm just not strong enough to hold the 2.8 lens and I'm just not a card-carrying 'hat turned backward, big glass on a monopod' type of gal. LOL
It's an excellent lens and I've even used it with the D300 on gray days and it works fine. Nothing is as good as the 2.8, but this works just fine for me. I'd recommend it if you don't have it.

Very nice!!! I didn't get any of her during the race at Delaware because she was on the inside behind everyone else. Though she was very pretty under the trees in the paddock.

LOL. Can't afford it right now, but it's something to think about for the future.

I have the 70-200mm f2.8 for my Canon, and I'd LOVE to have the 70-300mm f2.8.

I think she means the fixed 300, but I could be wrong.

If there's a better place to get photos of horses in the paddock than Del Park, I don't know where it is.
I've been saying that for years. The most picturesque paddock I can think of. It still has the old time charm feel to it. :-)

Keeneland could have some decent possibilities if every person who works in racing wasn't trying to be seen in the paddock.
Or the drunken college kids slamming into you while your trying to get a shot. Delaware Park is perfect. It's beautifully green and makes for a nice background.
