from At The Race:

Soumillon gives up Dabirsim ride

Christophe Soumillon has ended his association with Dabirsim following the colt's defeat in the French 2000 Guineas at Longchamp on Sunday.
The Belgian jockey told Paris-Turf that he lacked "chemistry" with the Christophe Ferland-trained three-year-old, who won two Group Ones for Frankie Dettori in an unbeaten juvenile campaign.
Soumillon has twice been out of luck aboard Dabirsim, who finished sixth in the French Classic at the weekend after he encountered desperate trouble in running.
Soumillon said: "I called the owner Simon Springer on Tuesday morning and I explained to him that I would prefer not to ride Dabirsim any more. I have gone over my two rides on him and I don't think I've made any big mistakes but you have to look at the facts. For some reason which I can't explain, I don't seem to get on with the colt.
"I'm not superstitious but the results speak for themselves - the chemistry isn't there between us. Regarding the horse and his connections, I think it's best for me to step aside and hope that the next jockey can help him rediscover his sparkle. I was very frustrated with how things turned out on Sunday and it's best not to continue."
Ferland is in no rush to make any firm decisions about who will ride Dabirsim on his next racecourse appearance.
He said: "There are plenty of able riders and the horse is not going to be running very soon, so we have some time to make a decision."
The French trainer admits his charge is not 100% after his luckless weekend run, and is keen to give him time before deciding on his next target - which could still be the July Cup at Newmarket.
He added: "The horse is just all right after his run on Sunday. He is not perfect after getting stopped in his run, but he will be OK. We will see how the horse is before we make any plans for him.
"There are plenty of options for him - there is the July Cup, the Prix Jean Prat and the Prix Maurice de Gheest. We will see first how the horse recovers. At the moment his best trip is seven furlongs and he can run over six furlongs, too, but I think he will stay a mile when he gets stronger. Next time he runs, we want him to have a nice run without having to break his action."

Does anyone have any thoughts on who will ride Dabirsim in his next time out?

Thanks for the link!

The other day, a commentator in a local TV program 'World Racing' said: 'Too many telephone inquires about DI to cope with has been rushing in Shadai from abroad.'

Interesting is the following line in the article:
'We can also note the combination of Halo and the similarly-bred Sir Ivor (broodmare sire of Alzao) 2x4,...Deep Impact has already begun to prove very effective when bred back over Northern Dancer line mares...Northern Dancer/Sir Ivor cross, might also go well here.'

Interesting because that is one of the points for a successful breeding with DI to which some bloodstock critics in Japan, such as Mr Motomu Kuriyama (http://www.miesque.com/motomu/), has been repeatedly referring.

Other examples are:
'Mares with Caerleon in their dam's side have been successfully bred to DI; this is 'a sure thing', illustrated by, for example, Joie de Vivre, Tosen Reve, Danon Shark, Para la Salud, and etc. Other than that, French Deputy and Vaguely Noble are well-matched with DI. These may be called successful formulae.

Also mares having Glorious Song, Devil's Bag, Angelic Song, and Saint Ballado get on well with DI, as seen in horses like Danon Ballade, Frere Jacques, Adam's Peak, and Vexina (all graded winners).'

With Beauty Parlour:
'Her 2nd sire Day is Done is packed with Round Table, Sir Gaylord, and Aureole that are well matched with DI. Also, she shares Artaius, Habitat, Aurelore≒Electric Flash with Marbye (dam of Marcellina, Jpn 1000 Guineas '08).'

(From the bloodstock blog by Mr Motomu Kuriyama)
The Select Sale this summer will be interesting to watch because Azeri's daughter by Zenno Rob Roy will come on the ring, and a full brother (yearling secession) as well as a full sister(foal secession) to Deep Brillante are listed by Paca Paca Farm of Dr Harry Sweeney. The foal reportedly looks exactly like the Jpn Derby winner.

Yes, very good run of Saonois… and Saint Baudolino too, who's second. Good day :).

Upper Lake, another son of Chichicastenango, won the last race. He is the brother of a horse I loved when I started to watch races, Kappelmann, who died on the track… so very very happy to see his little brother win this day.

Beautiful story for Saonois, who ran last year a "claim" race (? don't know the right word…) but also for his young jockey, Antoine Hamelin, who has become a pro just on the 1st of april… and won his first Grade 1 race.

Saint Baudolino (2°), Saonois (1°), Nutello (3°), Kesampour (4°), Top Trip (5°), and outside, Sir Jade (11°).

Peer Gynt had his first runner on the 23 of may, Aurore Béré, but it wasn't very good. The 2yo filly finished far away from the winner.

Still I would like to post her achievement in this thread....

Biwa Heidi(JPN), 1993M. Caerleon(USA) x Aghsan(IRE) by Lord Gayle(USA), has become the first broodmare to produce five graded-stakes-winners in JRA.
Her eighth foal Tosen Rave(JPN), 2008 colt by Deep Impact(JPN), scored his first graded victory in the G3 Epsom Cup 1800m turf at Tokyo today.

Biwa Heidi herself was a G1 winner and champion 2yo filly who defeated the great Air Groove(JPN), 1993M. Tony Bin(IRE) x Dyna Carle(JPN) by Norhtern Taste(CAN), in Hanshin Juvenile Fillies(G1)(formerly Hanshin Sansai Himba Stakes) in 1995.
Air Groove has so far produced three graded-stakes-winners -- Admire Groove, Forgettable and Rulership.

Summer Front deserves to win, what he did, really, i'm impressed ! Sad for Howe Great, but it's a good second place.

And about Barocci (hope he will be fine tomorow), his sister Beauty Parlour didn't win the Prix de Diane (GrI fillies 3yo 2100m), but finished 2 behind Valyra.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=he-l7SbPC9Y

Valyra only ran two times before the Diane, and not any stakes. But she is trained by Jean-Claude Rouget, who already won this race with Stacelita…

Thanks for local information, Lyxa!

I suppose many racing fans in Japan watched the Prix de Diane live via the Net, and were chagrined at the result! Glad she managed to stay when other front-runners suffered from the pace in the first half.

Many Deep Impacts in Japan were first said to be milers because they've been extremely good around the distance. Some still argue for that, and yet his progeny started to stay if well harnessed, which might be rather difficult due to their inherited urge to go faster:ballchain:; the sire was basically 'a speed horse.' (Katsumi Yoshida, Northern Farm)

Anyway, truly surprising was that grandchildren by Sunday Silence, such as Dabirsim and BP, remarkably succeeded from a few crops in France. Hope they stay in trainining safe and sound.

Thanks Tachyon, that's nice to see Nakayama Festa !

In France, another entry for Peer Gynt with his daughter Armonie Béré : 3°.

It's the grey filly.

For Layman, the handsome Gammarth finished 2° to Lockwood in the Prix Ris-Orangis (GrIII - 1200m).

Thanks Lyxa for your comment on the Arc runner-up Nakayama Festa.:)
He covered 100+ mares this year in his debut at stud.

I am very glad to hear that Layman's offspring are doing so well, even if it was a bit shame that he left France.
And, good luck to Peer Gynt babies!!!

Zenji(USA)(Hat Trick) wins listed stakes at Longchamp!!

I couldn't find a replay of the Prix Roland de Chambure. (and I coudn't watch it live, either).
But it sounds like that the 2yo Zenji was impressive in scoring his second victory.

Will he be as good as Dabirsim??

Lyxa

Zenji is not as impressive as Dabirsim but it's a good horse, no doubt about that. His mother Zinziberine was an excellent 2yo performer, winner of a G2, and multiple placed of graded stakes. Zinziberine is the mother of Zanzibari (GR3 winner at 2yo) and Zelimir (Listed winner at 2yo).

Saint Baudolino, 2nd in the Jockey Club (won by Saonois) was third yersterday in the Grand Prix de Paris (Gr1 - 2400m - 3yo), half a length behind Imperial Monarch (Galileo) and Last Train (Rail Link).

I find a funny link today, where you can see Divine Light's foals in Turkey : http://www.tjk.org/tjk_en/S/S/YeniDoganTaylar.aspx?l=2
Just ask "Divine Light" as sire. There is photos of most of the babies.

Here you can see his best son in Turkey, G3 winner on the 27th may 2012 :

Thanks Lyxa for the wonderful post!!! :)
It's really nice to see Divine Light and his babies in one place.
I have visited TJK website which I find very helpful for tracking horses in Turkey.
It's a bit funny that Divine Light babies made their success on the all-weather tracks in Turkey, isn't it?
I hope that he will be one of the leading sires in Turkey.

That was another tough beat for Saint Baudolino.
Obviously I hoped he would win the G1 Grand Prix de Paris.
He must be a G1 caliber but may just need a little more luck.

I will continue to root for Zenji.
His racing style reminds me of his sire Hat Trick.
Do you happen to know what Zenji means?
If it's related to Zen or Japan, it can either be a Zen priest or a male name.
Yes... I am very curious.

Oh oops! I forgot about Brian's Time. I wanted to get him done. He kind of fits in with Tony Bin/Sunday Silence/Northern Taste even though he isn't Shadai.

Deep Impact is too young for my tastes at the moment. Next year! I'd like to see how his offspring mature before I write anything. I am saving Stay Gold for after the Arc... fingers crossed!

I should probably alternate between non-SS and SS stallions huh? Hmm I will make out a good schedule to spread the love around. :)

I agree with you, Kate!
And, unfortunately, Shadai does NOT do this.
As a matter of fact, most of the well-known broodmares and most of the top stallions in Japan are held by Shadai.
I always wonder how wonderful it will be if Shadai starts a photo blog to communicate with the fans just as much as Big Red Farm does....

Aw poor Fuji Kiseki. He has been such a solid stallion and so handsome. I am a big Kane Hekili fan! I guess Danon Chantilly and Kinshasa no Kiseki will replace him at stud.

I hope he enjoys his retirement. There is probably no better place to be retired at than Shadai!:hat:

Shigeyuki Okada (Big Red Farm) said, ''With him, we wish to compete with Deep Impact (Shadai stallion). So, we would like to ask for everyone's cooperation''.

he looks like he is right at home there! I agree though, competing with the 'impact' deep impact already has over there will be quite the feat!

Thanks for Barocci's news.

Saint Baudolino won very very easily the Prix Guillaume d'Ornano (GR2 - 2000m) this afternoon, but Regatta (Layman) finished 5th again in the Prix de Lieurey (Gr3 - 1600m), as she did the first of July in another Gr3. She wasn't unlucky, but this level seems to be too hard for her. She has already win 2 listed races.

Zenji, who went off as the third favorite, finished 8th (of 11 horses) in the G1 Prix Morny.
But that was a good tight race. He was about 3 1/2 lengths from the winner.

Several have. Japan has been shuttling some of stallions since 1997, and the number used to be quite high. It has waned quite a bit though. in the past three years. I could be mistaken but I think Statue of Liberty is the only one still being shuttled. For several years only Stravinsky and Statue of Liberty were shuttled, but Stravinsky is now permanently in New Zealand at Cambridge Stud.

There might be interest in Deep Impact but I don't think they are going to shuttle him. Especially when rich breeders like the Wildensteins set the precedent of sending their mares all the way to Japan.

There used to be many Japanese stallions who were shuttling to Australia/NZ.
But it seems that the outbreak of equine influenza (in Japan and Aus) some years ago made these arrangements very difficult. (I hope that someone will tell us more about the current situation)

Yes it was the equine influenza that made it difficult for Japan stallions to shuttle to Aus/NZ,I think all the regulations after EI has made it difficult and costly to shuttle now.

Another 2 stallions I remember shuttling to NZ were Zenno Rob Roy and Jungle Pocket, they got stranded in quarantine in Melbourne and ended up serving some mares in Australia,I think both no longer shuttle to either Aus or NZ.

Actually the stud in NZ that was shuttling Zenno Rob Roy was put up for sale because of the financial cost of not been able to stand him was massive.

Thank you for your comments, Sunline.

I remember what happened in 2007, too.
That equine influenza really ruined cooperative relations that had been established between the Aus/NZ breeding and the Japanese breeding. And its aftershocks still seem to continue, unfortunately.
I hope that more stallions (and runners, too) will go back and forth between the two regions.

I've seen on http://www.stallions.com.au/indexes/archives.php (ask Sunday Silence as sire) that Bumble Gum Fellow (from 1999), Fuji Kiseki (from 1998), Genuine (from 2001) and Tayasu Tsuyoshi (from 2000) stood in Australia. I deduce they were shuttling, not standing for the year.

Zenno Rob Roy, curiously, is not mentioned (he was forced to stay in Australia in 2007 cause of the equine influenza epidemic).

Yeh, it seems like there might not be any shuttling right now. That is a shame. I think a lot of the smaller JPN stallions might have a better shot having 2 seasons a year. Shadai ones might be the most sought after but I think Japan has plenty of less publicized stallions that might have better luck in foreign markets. I mean Utopia is doing great in New York and Hat Trick seems to be doing great. I'd love to see more JBBA or Arrow Stud stallions head down south.

Kind of shocked Shadai took him. I would have chosen Espoir City over Smart Falcon as my Gold Allure stud choice.

Me too.

Not to knock Smart Falcon too much. But I like Espoir City's Brian's Time + Gold Allure pedigree, better then Falcons. Smart Falcon looks great on paper but I can't help but wonder if that is because he pretty much ONLY ran in Chiho races. I could probably win some of those races! haha

The Wertheimers have supported Silent Name, so he's bound to get some nice horses. I'm not sure Adena did him any favors by relocating him twice during his first 3 seasons at stud, but hopefully he'll be OK in the NY program now that he's established. He only got 14 mares in 2011.

Thanks!!
It's nice to hear good news about Silent Name and his offspring. :)

And here's also good news about Agnes Gold(JPN), 1998H. Sunday Silence(USA) x Elizabeth Rose(JPN) by Northern Taste(CAN), who left Japan in 2007.

He didn't get many mares so far:
in 2007 : 16 mares (in the states)
in 2008 : 27 mares (in the states) / 21 mares (in Brazil)
in 2009 : 13 mares (in Brazil)
in 2010 : 16 mares (in Brazil)
in 2011 : 7 mares (in Brazil)

But, this year, he has already sired two graded winners from his first Brazilian crop.
He is finally in the spotlight and expected to cover more mares this year. :)
Brazilian champion filly Alta Vista(BRZ) is booked to him!!

Better Know A Stallion: Brian’s Time
http://www.keiblog.com/Keiblog/Keiblog/Entries/2012/9/4_Better_Know_A_Stallion__Brians_Time.html

Thanks SO MUCH for the wonderful write-up, photos and videos. It's great to see the great stallion and his key offspring in one place.

It's amazing Brian's Time is still siring nice winners and covering mares actively at stud. And his offspring have been doing very well, too. (By the way, congrats to his 4yo filly named Kate, who won Hanshin 7R 1800m dirt today, haha :becky:)
It's been a while since I watched the replays of Narita Brian's races. I still got goose bumps today just watching his Triple Crown races. He was a real monster, ''Kaibutsu'', Wow!!
Phalaenopsis, with her beautiful name, was one of my most beloved racemare. I got to tears when she won the G1 QE2 Commemorative Cup in her final race.

Mayano Top Gun's Tenno Sho Spring in 1997 is always one of my all-time favorite races in Japan. He and his jockey Seiki Tabara were really, really determined to win that race. Please watch out the #4 horse and his jockey’s ride.

Not all stallions get the volume in Japan that the Shadai stallions get. Some of the not so popular stallions could se single digits or under 20 without anything being wrong.

Not sure in this case with Xaar. I know Lincoln died early this year, which explains his low number.

That's the same in France, and I think everwhere too. Divine Light, for his first year in France, had 7 covers (and Natagora is one of them ! Divine Light, the well-named !)

I remember it now, I think I read about Lincoln. That's sad, I liked him.
But Xaar not popular in Japan, that's strange for me. His european production is far better than just good ! Several stake winners almost in all his crops ! I don't think they would have exported him for 6 covers…

Anyway, thanks for your response ;-).

I always get a lot of "shock" over the low numbers some of the smaller stallion farms get. Maybe they just don't know the industry haha and thus are shocked. Hmm I looked him up in JBIS and he had 29 his first year in 2008, 59 in 2009, 55 in 2010, 30 in 2011.

Xaar hasn't sired any JRA winner from his first two Japanese crop yet since last year.
That must be one of the the main reasons why he got only 6 mares this season.
I think that things can still change, as he will be represented by more runners from next year. But I also have a gut feeling that Darley will send him back to Europe where he will be able to meet demand.

It makes sense.

Scan(USA) has always been a consistent sire since 1992 when he was introduced to Japan.
Masayoshi Miyoshi, the manager of the Hidaka Stallion Station, commented; ''He is still in very good health for his age. From my experience, a stallion who has storng teeth and appetite like him can have a longer stud career. I remember that Nice Dancer(CAN) and Lucky Sovereign(USA) did. It's getting difficult to find many mares for him due to his age recently. But I will continue to try to give him as many mares as possible. His babies have been doing well anywhere between 2yo and 8yo, on either surface.''

Daiwa Major(JPN) was crowned the best first-season-sire last year. He is now one of the most popular Sunday Silence stallions standing in Japan.

Eisuke Tokutake, the spokesman for Shadai Stallion Station commented; ''I am very glad that he lives up to our expectations. His strong points he had as a racehorse seem to run in his babies. He was showing his best in shorter distance (from a mile to 10F) for a Sunday Silence son.''

The top turf race at Santa Anita on Saturday is the $150,000 Arroyo Seco Mile, a race led by Obviously and Mr. Commons. They were first and second in the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile on Aug. 26.

The Arroyo Seco Mile field has one international runner in the Japanese import Trailblazer, who is using the race as a prep for the BC Turf over 1 1/2 miles on Nov. 3. A Grade 2 winner in Japan, Trailblazer worked five furlongs in 1:40 at Hollywood Park on Wednesday.

Empire Maker(USA) sired a new dirt star in Japan today, as Ijigen(USA), 2009C. out of Cosmic Wish(USA) by Dixieland Band(USA), won the G3 Musashino Stakes 1600m dirt at Tokyo impressively. Off a stumbled start, he trailed early but surged powerfully in the stretch. He will probably be one of the top favorites in the upcoming Japan Cup Dirt(G1).
Empire Maker covered 236 mares this year.

King's Best to Darley Japan!
http://www.darley.co.jp/ja/news/13693

I'm thrilled with this news.
I believe that the Kingmambo's best fit to the Japanese racing.
It also seems that Sheikh Mo is now serious about his operation in Japan.

that would be so exciting if they did, their broodmare band is one of the best in the world, not to mention their stallion roster! does shadai have a website? they don't seem to be into social networking as much, it isn't very easy to get a lot of info on them besides the BH articles

But the main farms of Shadai group (Shadai Farm, Northern Farm and Shiraoi Farm) don't have anything.

Sunday Racing is run by Shunsuke Yoshida, who runs it for his father Katsumi Yoshida. Katsumi owns Northern Farm, he is the brother of Teruya Yoshida, who owns Shadai Farm, and Haruya Yoshida who owns Oiwake Farm. The three run the Shadai Stallion Station and Shiraoi Farm. It's all known as the Shadai Group. Other racing clubs are involved too. Teruya has Shadai Horse Club and Haruya has G1 Racing Club. Northern Farm supplies most of the horses to Carrot Farm, another racing club.

Here is the newly retired 5yo Eishin Apollon(USA). He raced in Japan, Giant's Causeway x Silk & Scarlet, Sadler's Wells.
Major Achievements:
2yo: 1st in Keio Hai 2yo Stakes(G2, T1400m), 2nd in Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes(G1, T1600m), 2nd in Daily Hai 2yo Stakes(G2, T1600m)
3yo: 2nd in Yayoi Sho (G2, T2000m), 2nd in Mainichi Okan (G2, T1800m)
4yo: 1st in Mile Championship(G1, 1600m) 1st in Fuji Stakes (G3, 1600m)
19: 4-4-0 (289,196,000yen)

There is only one other Giant's Causeway at stud in Japan. Giant Wrecker (https://www.jbis.or.jp/jbis_cgi/sp_detail.cgi?sire=0000905094), who was a G3 winner in North America. Eishin Apollon is standing at better known Lex Stud, versus Giant Wreckers East Stud, which I have never heard of. haha Hopefully they will give this cutie a chance. Here is the link for Eishin Apollon's arrival. it is in Japanese, but you can see other photos of him too. I love his white nose haha http://uma-furusato.com/news/detail/_id_70031
