Do the Phipps still own Vacation?
He's back on the work tab.
Your Notes: 2005 .c, Dynaformer-Country Hideaway(Seeking The Gold)
VACATION worked 5f ft in 1:11.00 B (5/5) at DEL, 01/15/11.
I think Vacation the Phipps' horse was sold to a South American breeder.
Too bad. Vacation has a really nice pedigree.

Break up the Game ran well to be 4th. It's clear that 7 furlongs is too short for him - and probably the layoff hurt him. He should love two turns...........
Break Up The Game go an 82 BSF. If you like gallup outs he was a length or 2 in front right after the wire. 2 turns should help him.

That appears to be an Arabian named Vacation
That would explain the painfully slow time for a 5 furlong work.

I noticed that about the gallop out.....I'm not sure what that means in terms of the race as I think the best horse won, but he's a horse that I think a lot of. That's a nice improvement from his debut, where he ran really well despite the lowish Beyer. I hope the Phipps breed more to Bernardini; they didn't have the best of luck with his sire, but if BUTG is any indication, perhaps they'll have better luck with his son.

Too bad. Vacation has a really nice pedigree.
He was sold at the Novermber 2010 Keeneland sale with Claiborne Farm as agent for the Phipps Stable reduction. He sold for $80,000 to Agrofina Los Caracaros, C.A., which according to Pedigree Query is Haras Los Caracaros stud in Venezuela.
Agreed. A very nice pedigree...

Phipps Stable and the Janney's have around forty horses of racing age at the moment, either owned entirely or in partnership. Around fifteen of these are unraced. Of the eight 3yo fillies owned by the Phipps, seven are unraced. Gone Astray is the only horse in training to have won a Graded race.
Phipps Stable will have eighteen 2yo's and the Janney colors will have six, (two of which are in partnership).

Great update Cladan, love your posts. I am wondering who the new additions are to the brood mare band (first foal for 2012)? I am sure Persistantly is one. I am assuming Consequence and Forest Trail. There a few 4 year old fillies that haven't worked in a few months so I am thinking Hit It Rich, Protesting and Snooze would all be possible?
Hi Cladan! I saw that Enhancing had a workout at The Thoroughbred Center in the last week or so - I assume that (combined with your reference to 8 three-year old Phipps fillies) means that she's been sold?
Also, I noticed Streaker was back on the worktab at Niall Brennan's place on the 15th - very excited for her eventual return!
And thanks as always for your updates!
This weekend we will see the debut of Hot Rodder (08C More Than Ready x Provincial) at Tampa going 1-1/16M on turf, plus the returns of Data Link (08C War Front x Database) in a 1-1/16M turf allowance at Gulfstream and Admiral Perry (08C First Samurai x Western Humor) in a 1M turf allowance at Tampa.

Hi Roar,
Couple of runners today in the Janney colors ; Asset Play and Deed It Is. The dams were both sold last fall and both runners will have to improve an awful lot from their debuts.
Western Humor had an Indian Charlie filly yesterday. First of the year.
Sounds like Deed It Is ran OK. Asset Play didn't show much. And Shug had a winner and a 3rd for other, non-Phipps clients also. Hopefully that success carries over to the Phipps/Janney horses the rest of the weekend.

Well, it sure was fun watching the replay of the second at Gulfstream. I wouldn't have run either unless it was back to the barn.
I just noticed Keep Up was out of Keeper Hill. Interesting.

Thanks as always Cladan for the updates.
Darn, sure wish TVG showed Gulfstream. I'll have to go back and watch the races.
I was checking works for the 3 year old fillies and haven't found any for Go Ballistic, How Pleasant or Out of Touch. Just wondering if anyone has news on them, or if they've possibly been sold?
Added: Nice win by Admiral Perry...

Out of Touch was sold as a yearling, Go Ballistic is entered in the Fasig Tipton sale next month and How Pleasant last worked in November as far as I know.
Looks like Enhancing (08F Forestry x Heavenly Prize) was sold - she's in at Turfway on the 28th as owned by Katierich Stables.

As Cladan mentioned, Data Link runs today. It's the 7th at Gulfstream - 1 1/6 Allowance on the turf. Current odds are 4/1. Go Data Link...

Sounds like another professional win from Data Link today at Gulfstream - gives the Janneys a couple of nice 3yo prospects. Wonder if Shug will try either of them in any Derby preps just to see - although since he's kept Admiral Perry at Philly and Tampa I'd guess probably not...

Nice! I've been following Data Link closely because of his sire (War Front, out of Starry Dreamer) and I'm hoping the Janneys give him a shot on dirt. He didn't do well in his starts on dirt, but they were at 6 and 7 furlongs, and with his running style, he needed more distance.
I'm hoping the Janneys (and the Phipps) go back to War Front with some of their lovely mares.

I don't know of any mares that the Phipps have bred to War Front, but the Janneys are using him. Looks like there's a 2010 filly that's a full to Data Link, and I think Database (the dam) was bred back to him last year. Deed I Do (who was sold last year) is listed as having a 2009 colt named Into the Fray, and a 2010 colt. Vespers is also listed as having a 2010 colt.

I don't believe Mr. Janney will be getting Derby fever anytime soon. Data Link has a pretty good turf pedigree and has continued to improve in each of his races over the surface. Admiral Perry is a little more versatile but would be the least preferred of the Janney 3yo winners. Air Support remains the best of the group at the moment and will hopefully run well in some of the Graded turf races later on in the season.
The two maidens Break Up the Game and Point of Entry are nice classic types and their next appearances should tell us more about their immediate future. The Matlacha Pass colt has a lot of upside and it would be wonderful for the the family to get a nice dirt runner from Dynaformer but is more for the future.
The fillies are an unknown quantity and we should learn a little more about them at the Belmont spring meeting. Hopefully a couple will debut at Gulfstream in February and the group continue to be brought along slowly.
Enhancing was sold last year and has been another disappointing filly for Heavenly Prize. Hopefully Gracious Gift will show us more later on and the 2yo fillies seem to be a nice crop this time around.

Break up the Game should be favored next out - he ran very well in a strong race and galloped out far in front of the others after the race.

Foaled on monday and the first under the banner of Phipps Stable.
Cause of Freedom runs later tomorrow at Gulfstream Park and will hopefully benefit from stretching out further. It is hoped that Rescue Squad will be able to contest the MacDiarmida Stakes later in the month and there will be a few entries to look forward too this weekend. Point of Entry remains an exciting prospect for later and has come on nicely since his debut and Drifting Away is close to having a run.

Thanks so much Cladan for the information about the new Hidden Reserve colt, and the upcoming races.
Unfortunately have TVG, so no Gulfstream, but I'll be rooting for Cause of Freedom. For others, it's Race 8 - an Allowance Optional Claiming - 1 3/8 miles on the turf. He's #3 and his opening odds are 10/1.
Also, as I've been out of town, just got the notice that Financier finished 9th in his race on the 29th. Darn, wish he'd done better, and hope he came home ok...

Cause of Freedom wins on DQ of Dr. Peach.
Cause of Freedom was jammed on the rail when Dr. Peach "went bonkers" around the first turn.

Hot Rodder will debut tomorrow at Tampa and as the horses continue to run well, hopefully the colt will hit the board. A half to a minor winner, the dam was sold last year.
Very much looking forward to the return of Imaging on sunday, who has not raced for nearly fifteen months. The colt has not been without his problems and like his brother Perusal has a ton ability. Will obviously come on for the race, so fingers crossed for a bold showing. Steel Bridge will also debut at Gulfstream Park on the same card and is a half brother to four winners.
Well Hot Rodder unfortunately didn't show much yesterday at Tampa, trailing throughout. Hopefully Steel Bridge and Imaging will run better this weekend.
Also, All Time High (08F Awesome Again x Oh What a Windfall) debuts on the 9th at Gulfstream going 1-1/16 miles on the turf. She's been working pretty steadily, and OWAW has thrown a pair of Grade 2-placed runners (Pick Six and Conservative), although she was sold this past year.

Don't worry, the colt is fine but isn't going to be rushed on a speed favoring track. A mile would be the preferred option next time and there isn't a suitable race until the 26th February. It remains to be seen whether Shug will decide to run or wait until Aqueduct. Point of Entry has shown more speed on the track and continues to please in his works.

Not as sizable. The Bernardini 2yo is a nice one, so lets hope she can run.

A couple of nice maidens to look forward too over the weekend; Gold Trader and Abaco.
As previously posted, the Storm Cat line hasn't worked out with Cat Cay so far and she has a couple of Smart Strike fillies at 2yo and a yearling that are very nice. Abaco has been working progressively and hopefully she can hit the board. Gold Trader has had a jockey change from his previous start at 2yo and will hopefully go close on his seasonal debut.
Somewhat off topic but Claiborne Farm and Mrs Dilschneider have a couple of 3yo debutants also running over the weekend. I understand that Might that has been working well and has always been highly thought of since her days on the farm. The Hancock family have enjoyed a good start to the season and a bold showing from the sister to Blame would be important to the breeding operation. Bind is the other to run and I'm told that Congo won again this afternoon. There is also another nice colt named left who won on his debut.

Bind was very impressive winning yesterday, BSF 105. Interesting that he was in the Keeneland yearling sale and did not meet his reserve at 180K. I was thinking the pedigree seemed like turf to me the mom being a half to some nice turf horses but it looks like he can run on dirt. Claiborne also had a good looking 3 year old colt win at Gulfstream, Escort won in his 3rd career start for Todd Pletcher with BSF of 97.
Abaco didn't threaten in her race, but she was closing some ground in the stretch after being outrun early on. Hopefully she's got some improvement in her.
Claiborne and Ms. Dilschneider's Might had a pretty solid debut herself yesterday - overcoming some traffic to just miss.

It looks as though Data Link will ship to Keeneland for his next race, although it remains to be seen whether Shug will keep the colt on the turf or run the colt in a race like the Lexington Stakes. Either way, the 3yo has gone through his conditions with some style and will hopefully continue to improve. Dare I say it but another nice 3yo prospect from a Claiborne stallion.
Looking ahead to the weekend, the form to Point of Entry's maiden hasn't worked out too well but the colt has continued to work nicely and it is hoped that he will be able able to continue his speed deep into the stretch this time around. Certainly the quickest Dynaformer that the family has bred, while Conservative is probably one of the slowest to have been sired by Unbridled's Song (although sound as a bell). The horse was given a freshener on the dirt last month and will hopefully run well over the longer distance before shipping to Keeneland later on. Imaging has a punishing to knee action like his talented brother but ran pretty well after his lengthy lay off. This gorgeous colt runs on sunday and will hopefully go very close.
Have a great weekend.
Just watched the replay of Point of Entry's 2nd-place finish from the TDN - it looked like another pretty strong effort. He was getting to the winner late, and battled back to secure 2nd after dropping to 3rd (by a head or so) between calls in the stretch.

Puzzling - Shug is running Break up the Game in a 7 furlong race on Saturday at Gulfstream when he could have run him as an entry with Point of Entry in that mile race..... I think this horse wants to go long, but maybe Shug thinks of him as a late-running sprinter?

I think you have to get used to the way in which the family horses are conditioned. The spacing between races is good, the colt has closed pretty well in both of his 7f outings and Break Up the Game will be much sharper this time around. Boisterous has won both of his races going longer and reverts back to a mile for his seasonal debut on the same card and will be best watched on saturday. Deed It Is has been entered to debut on the turf having shown some ability in the slop at the same distance previously.
On Sunday, Admiral Perry (love the name) will contest a minor stakes on the synthetic at Turfway Park and Financier runs in a maiden claimer at Gulfstream.
Point of Entry showed some improvement and will hopefully be more suited by a less speed favoring track. Very much looking forward to some of these 3yo's running back in NY.

Thanks for posting that video so that I didn't have to wait for tomorrow's TDN to watch the replay. That was a very nice effort from Break Up the Game - and certainly seems to indicate that he's only going to improve as he stretches out.
Wasn't he cutting back in distance to 7/8th's?

Break Up the Game has come out of his race in good fashion and the plan is to stretch out in his next start, most probably at Aqueduct. If all goes well, the Peter Pan is a possibility but the allowance race will tell us a little more about how the colt is progressing. The colt will continue to be nominated to some of the better races and was nominated to the Blue Grass Stakes, along with Admiral Perry, Data Link and Point of Entry. Dirt remains the preferred surface for the two Phipps horses or at least until they can't compete with some of the better 3yo's.
Seal Cove looked pretty good today in a minor race. The colt's performance suggested that he could win a few more races on the bounce and was the 4th individual winner for the wonderful Meghan's Joy.
The horses are running pretty well as we start thinking about the stable shipping to Keeneland and back to Belmont. The fillies have continued to be a little behind the colts in their development but will hopefully catch up in the spring.

Just wondering if anyone knows if Furlough was sold? On the 2011 foal thread someone mentioned that she had her Pulpit colt on 2/24. I went to Equineline and noticed that it has Katierich Farm (?), not Phipps Stable, as the breeder.
It also shows that Matlacha Pass had a Giant's Causeway colt on 3/11. Wonder who she's going back to?

Furlough was sold privately last year. Heavenly Prize and Dancinginmydreams are now the branchlines for the Lady Pitt family. Although Furlough has produced 6 winners, her progeny have ultimately disappointed from the kind of quality that was hoped for, as indeed was the case with Oh What a Windfall.

Also, just wondering if you might have any news on any more new foals?

P.S. What a coincidence - just came back and added this after reading TDN. Furlough's first foal, Happy Hunting, had one of his first foals (a 2 year old colt), Oro Para Chile (CHI) place 2nd in the Clasico Seleccion De Potrillos (G3) in Chile on March 12th.

Last Laugh was sold at the 2yo sale in January as a breeding prospect. Indefinite is the last foal owned by the family and is in Florida at the moment with Prospecting.
Phipps Stable has six foals at present.

As the broodmares have been culled to a more reasonable number the branches of each family been been streamlined through specific mares. As you know, Pennant Champion was sold a few years back and the future of the Dorine family looks at the moment as though it will run through My Flag - the jury is still out on Salute. Protesting will hopefully win some more blacktype this year and paved the way to sell Fly the Flag. Hurricane Flag is certainly sellable but her pedigree and whether Break up the Game can develop into a blacktype sort of horse will determine whether she can be sold. It wouldn't make much sense to sell a Storm Cat half sister to a potential Stakes winner (not saying that the colt is) at this moment in time. If Break up the Game turns out like the rest of his progeny, it would be difficult to retain Hurricane Flag and there are also a couple of nice 2yo fillies from the same family who could turn out to be anything.
Kind Regards

It was initially hoped that Protesting would be able to run on the maintrack at Keeneland although, as previously posted, the fillies have been a bit behind this year. I know this will sound like a cliche but the filly will run when she is ready and we could be looking at around May at the moment. We shall have to see how the filly does in the coming weeks.

I would breed her to Bernardini. One, the Phipps have to be happy with Break up the Game. Two, she's from the Mr. P line and AP Indy and his sons do well (to say the least) with that line. Three, she needs to be bred to speed and Bernardini has injected many of his offspring with quality speed.

He drew the rail - boo! - but it's a small field, so hopefully it won't be too bad. I'm not familiar with the other horses, but I absolutely love this colt and would be very disappointed if he didn't win. Today is absolutely gross in NY, but the sun will be shining on Shug after BUTG's race!
Interestingly a few horses from his maiden win are entered in maiden races at GP on Sunday - Bomber Boy and the horse who finished just ahead of him (90 Shillings?). Of course I hope BB wins - he's another Bernardini

Quite a few of the runners this season have been from culled mares and it has been a slow start for the black and cherry. That said, the Janney colors have produced 6 winners and it was wonderful to enjoy Graded success on the opening day of the keeneland meet.
Air Support proved his Breeders' Cup run all wrong and looked pretty good coming off the pace. The American Turf Stakes on Oaks day is a possibility for next time.
Imaging is a stakes placed half brother to Air Support and it is hard to imagine that this guy is still a maiden. The colt has been pretty rank in his past two efforts and is becoming frustrating.
Steel Bridge has run pretty well on both of his efforts this season and it will be fun to see how the colt can go when given some running room in the stretch.
Data Link is due to conest either the Gr.1 or Gr.2 at Keeneland on the main track. Another exciting colt for the Janney's to look forward too.
Home Rule shaped very well earlier on last year and then went off the boil in her last two efforts. Is due to make her seasonal debut on friday at Aqueduct and hopefully this half sister to Hunting and Quiet Harbor can go close.
Puzzling ran very well on sunday and should come on a lot for the race.
Boisterous looked pretty good down in Florida and is due to run on thursday at Keeneland. If all goes well the colt may run at Churchill Downs after that and it will be interesting to see how this colt goes when stretched out later in the season.
Point of Entry has always looked like a good colt but is going to have to start proving it on the track. Wintered very well and is entered to run on friday at Aqueduct. will have to beat a nice colt of Mr. La Plenta's, so fingers crossed.
Evasion has been brought along steadily and will hopefully be able to debut on the main track at Keeneland. Given her pedigree, there hasn't been any rush but the filly has shown a little more in recent weeks.
Break Up the Game was exposed by the slow early fractions and a track that has seen its fair share of beaten odds-on favorites. The colt ran on well to the wire but it was a race he should have won, so we shall have to wait and see.
Thanks for that great update Cladan! It was nice to see Air Support return with a big effort, and hopefully Point of Entry can run big on Friday.

Abaco had shaped well on her turf debut despite running green and confirmed that promise with an encouraging 2nd this afternoon. The filly had been working more professionally since coming up to Keeneland and the blinkers, as well as the increased trip certainly helped her cause. The next couple of races will be important and hopefully Abaco can win a couple along the way.
Streaker was due to run in a minor stakes at Belmont but the race didn't fill. Not sure if the filly will go direct to the Shuvee Handicap or whether Shug will continue to look for a softer spot. The filly is ready to run.

Hello Cladan - I'm a big fan of the Phipps stable and love Streaker. The Belmont condition book has a f+m nw3X at a mile on the dirt the day before the Shuvee. Unless the stake comes up light, perhaps an easier return off a year on the shelf? Not to tell Shug what to do...
Also, any current plans for Evasion's debut? Empire Maker and Inside Information were two of my all time favorites, so I'm hoping she can run. Looks like the idea was to get her on synthetic at Keeneland but it did not pan out.

It will certainly depend on the field and as you say, the allowance would be a nicer prep. There is little doubt that Streaker has ability but she lacks experience against better fillies and there is little desire to expose her this early into the season. We shall have to see how the filly trains in the coming weeks and what happens with the Shuvee field.
Evasion is still a little backward, although her last work was encouraging and she continues to progress. The turf may well prove to be her surface but there is still a hope that the filly could go on the dirt. Either way, the filly is too valuable to run if she continues to come up short in her works.
Forgot to mention that the Janney yearlings have been named (minus two) both of which could be consigned to the sales later in the year.

Claiborne and Mr Janney have both had such wonderful success since they bought into this family and hope that Home Rule can put it all together next time. It's hard to believe that Searching couldn't do a thing for Mr.Phipps..

Streaker entered in a 6F nw 3X and drew the rail where she had good success last year. Facing a Pletcher filly Katy Now who like Streaker ran through three straight conditions and was thought highly enough to run in the Mother Goose and Raven Run.
Break Up the Game stretches out a bit to 8.5F in a nw 1X. Facing a Jimmy Jerkens colt Ripples n'Waves, who looked a runner handily defeating the stables well meant Point of Entry last out.
Would love to see them both run well and keeping my fingers crossed for one or dare I say two trips to the winners circle.

Thank you. As discussed, there have been various attempts to get Streaker into a race during the past few weeks and 6f against some of these fillies is going to be tough off the long lay off. Hopefully the filly will run well enough to set up for the rest of the season. Both Point of Entry and the favorite were very disappointing and both of the stable's dirt runners ran poorly over the Aqueduct main track. It will be interesting to see how Mr. Jerkens' colt fares against Break Up the Game over the extra 1/2f.

From the DRF:
Streaker returns in allowance race
Streaker had won the first three starts of her career when she entered the starting gate for last year’s Grade 1 Acorn Stakes. A rough trip resulted in a last-place finish and a lengthy vacation.
Friday, Streaker returns to the races for the first time in 11 months in a third-level allowance race going six furlongs. It will be the shortest distance at which Streaker has raced.
Trainer Shug McGaughey said that Streaker came out of the Acorn “banged up” and was given some time off. McGaughey said he had Streaker ready to run around April 1, but couldn’t find a race for h er.
“I got to train her a little more, and I’m looking forward to running her on Friday,” McGaughey said.

As noted above, just a fantastic return. A bobble, or even slight stumble at the start, running down on the inside perhaps not the best part of the track for half mile and she absolutely rocketed home in the stretch.
Can't wait for her next start. It will be interesting to see if Shug keeps her short as she was so impressive. Probably a difficult call for the next outing as stepping up too soon was a debacle in the Acorn but the Gr I Ogden Phipps at 1 1/16M next month of course has to be a consideration. Now that would be something.

Well, I suppose I said that b/c when the Acorn came up such a full talented field and Devil May Care was pointing for the Mother Goose, my thoughts were off of a nw 2X that perhaps a nw 3X which had been carded at Belmont or ungraded stake at Monmouth into the Monmouth Oaks would be a more judicious step than jumping from a nw 2X to Gr I. However, I feel differently now if she comes out of the return well. I believe her return was her best effort to date (without seeing speed figures) and if the Ogden Phipps comes up a short field, at age four I somehow feel the time could be right to jump from allowance to Gr I this time around. Especially given the significance of this particular race. Of course she may be at her best as an off the pace sprinter.

Streaker worked very well on tuesday and the extra couple of weeks training really helped to sharpen the filly for the distance. The bobble at the gate was a heart stopper but the filly looked pretty good coming down to the wire. Country Hideaway won a similiar race going to the Vagrancy Handicap and although it depends on how the filly comes out of the race, it would be tempting to keep Streaker at the shorter distance for now. She is certainly the fastest that the family has had for a long time and reminds me very much of her dam. It was also nice that Streaker won on the day that Sky Beauty was inducted to the hall of fame.

If Streaker does stay short maybe the Ballarina at Saratoga will be the goal for the summer? As I was posting this I remembered Country Hideaway and Pleasant Home both ran second in the Ballarina and that family deserves a win in the race. That got me thinking Inside Information was second in the Ballarina after bobbling at the break and I wondered if Shug or the Phipps family had ever won the race so I looked it up. In 32 runnings of the race Shug won 5 times and the Phipps family won 3. Anyone want to guess who the 6 horses are? (2 of the 3 for the Phipps family were trained by Shug).

Shug: I know Furlough won it (Phipps) and Queena (King Ranch bunch). Did Cadillacing win it or run 2nd? That would be Phipps.
BS (Before Shug): Blitey (I think) (Phipps).
Pat Day won it once, I believe, for Shug but I can't remember the filly's name.

Been waiting for Evasion (Empire Maker - Inside Information) to race and just saw she's entered Thursday in a Md Sp Wt at Belmont 1 1/16M turf. 18-year old 7-lb apprentice, Frenchman Ryan Curatolo named. Not sure what to make of it but perhaps the jock is showing a lot of skill and the weight break is nice. Cladan I believe mentioned the stable wanted to see a little more in the morning; hopefully she can made a good account of herself. Would certainly be guessing the plan will be to settle and finish well.

I think Boisterous was actually edging slightly away again at the wire as he saw Grassy coming at him once these two took over as expected (not to mention a generous $21.40 exacta). Typical flawless ride by Johnny V. That's four wins in his past five starts. Looking forward to perhaps the Woodford Reserve or Man O War next; if he comes out of the race well, it seems he's earned the chance. I'm sure the stable is enjoying seeing a Cynthia Phipps mare produce such a promising runner.
Hats off to Shug; he's off to a terrific Belmont meet.

All of the mares/fillies bred by Cynthia were sold and Boisterous is the last of her horses to remain in ownership with the family. The Ten Cents a Dance line Cynthia carefully developed over the years always seems to get better with distance and age, and Boisterous has shown that he can run well on firm or yielding turf. Hopefully there is a lot more to come.
It's certainly been a good start to Belmont and some really nice performances on the dirt hopefully bodes well for the coming months. Point of Entry showed that he is a really nice one for the future and the leggy colt really enjoyed the conditions. His performance at Aqueduct was such a disappointment and his eye catching win was a big relief.
As has already been mentioned, Evasion is due to make her debut on thursday and there will be plenty of anticipation as to how the filly performs. She has two tone fluffy ears and quite a striking head.
Looking slightly further ahead, Abaco is due to stay on the turf and there is a 10f MSW for her in the middle of June. Streaker has come out of her race in good order and is still being considered for the Vagrancy Handicap. Imagining has been working more seriously in recent weeks and there are hopes that the colt will be ready in time to debut for Saratoga.
Thanks for the update Cladan, especially with regards to Imagining. It's nice to see the black and cherry running well - last year when Shug got hot it seemed like it was all Janney horses that were winning. Here's hoping the momentum continues to build.

Tomorrow promises to be an exciting day for both the Phipps family and Claiborne, when Streaker and Might run in the Vagrancy Handicap and the Dogwood Stakes. There are a number of similiarities between the two fillies which may be worth mentioning. Both have been well regarded from their earlier years on the farm and have continued to please in their progression on the track. Both fillies hail from families that have enjoyed the most success within their respective broodmare bands in recent years and both Matlacha Pass and Liable have lost some of their progeny in tragic circumstances. Both fillies are important to the future of their breeding operations and although the best is yet to come later in the season and neither may win tomorrow, it would be wonderful for both fillies to pick up some blacktype.
Oops. Didn't have time to mention that both dams are by Seeking the Gold and whose best progeny so far have been from the Hail to Reason line.

Streaker - perhaps the turnaround was a little quick off the huge return; but it's probably fair to say no filly in the country could have touched the winner Saturday. Probably a good idea to recover, stay away from that filly, and find out if Streaker is indeed an off the pace sprinter or middle distance filly. While she did not have a final punch, it was far from a debacle.
Gone Astray and Evasion - Cladan any news on these two? I thought Gone Astray ran great at Charles Town and could have placed had he gotten through on the inside, but the work tab has gone quiet. As to Evasion, any reason Shug scratched from the turf race? Thank you in advance for any news.

Streaker needs to be sent to Grade III races at best. She has completely flopped in two graded stakes tries so far and is just not good enough to run against G1/G2 caliber sprinters. Her win to kick off the year was entirely pace and dynamics-aided. If he runs her in the Bed O' Roses and Hilda's Passion is in there she'll get walloped again.

Air Support ran well enough coming back in distance and picked up some more blacktype. In the absence of some nice horses for Mr Janney; Data Link, Rescue Squad and Adjacent, the colt has provided a lot of pleasure for the connections and is incredibly consistent. Despite not being able to catch the winner from that far back the race now sets him up well for the Virginia Derby. The Janney colors will have a couple running during the week. Steel Bridge was a little disappointing last time and can hopefully get a little closer on wednesday. Hit It Rich runs on thursday after a long lay off and Shug has decided to bring the filly back to 6f and a distance she yet to run over. This gorgeous Smart Strike filly sort of lost her way after what turned out to be a muddling campaign last year and was freshened back on the farm to hopefully get her back in the right frame of mind. Hit It Rich was been working pretty well of late and will hopefully hit the board.
It was hoped that Abaco would have been able to run on thursday but the 10f race didn't fill and it was asking a little bit coming back in distance against the well regarded Clement filly. The daughter of Cat Cay ran a smashing race from off the pace and despite the scary moment in the stretch, ran very well. Abaco was previously beaten at Keeneland by a filly that won a Gr.3 on saturday and her form is looking pretty solid. She will run next at Saratoga and hopfully get the all important win. Hot Rodder runs on tuesday in a maiden claimer.
Time permitting, I shall post on the 2yo's some time during the week.

Yes it was a modest Monmouth field and she benefited from Joe Bravo giving a flawless ride, but Puzzling performed very nicely. She looked interested from the start, willingly edged closer without urging on the backside, was not intimidated on the inside around the turn, and once clear off the rail leveled out nicely to draw clear. The 47 second work seemed to sharpen her up. Hope to see her back at Monmouth in a first level allowance as she looked quite comfortable here.

Nice seasonal debut win for Surreptitiously, albeit at Presque Isle Downs. Was still pretty green but the colt stayed on well enough at the end. A win is a win and the horses continue to run consistently.
As you say, it was an encouraging run from Point of Entry. The slow pace was unhelpful and some cut in the ground would have been nice but the colt closed well to the wire against the winner, who has run exclusively on the turf and beaten some decent sorts.

Protesting is entered Sunday at Belmont - Race 6 Allowance Optional Claiming (claim $0), 1 1/16 miles on the turf. She's P# 2, 6/1, Velazquez riding.
Go girl go...
Super impressive win for Shug's and Ms. Hamilton's Flying Passage in the Recording Stakes at Belmont a couple minutes ago - she rated in last behind a very slow pace and just flew by everyone in the lane. Won going away by about 3. Hopefully Hymn Book has his running shoes on as well for the Suburban in an hour.

Actually, it's Flying Passage's daughter,Hungry Island, who pulled off the impressive win.
Oops, my mistake.
Decent 2nd for Hymn Book behind the runaway winner.

Well darn - Protesting finished last. She seemed to be running well, and then it looked like to me that she bobbled a bit. Didn't seem to be running well after that. Just wondering if anyone else noticed anything?
Shug is quoted in today's Thoroughbred Daily News regarding Hymn Book's and Boisterous's next races. Boisterous goes in next weekend's Man o' War-G1T, while Hymn Book will seek an off track stakes at Saratoga.

Shug seems to have gotten desperate with Break up the Game, who was formerly a promising prospect. He has zero turf pedigree, but he's entered in the first at Belmont, a turf sprint. I really thought this guy was going to be a nice one, but he's really disappointed. I'm not expecting much from him today, but hopefully he'll surprise me.
I too was skeptical, but obviously Shug knew what he was doing - gutsy last second win from Break Up the Game in his turf debut.

Really explosive - I'm not sure if it was the turf or the return to the sprint; he might just be a come-from-behind sprinter.

I won’t mention all the 2yo’s as I am sure everyone who looks at this thread is aware of them. There is plenty of depth with the fillies in this crop, although it’s fair to say that most of them probably won’t be ready to run this year. The 2yo’s listed are not in any particular order.
Risky Asset Smart Strike x Smuggler
2nd foal from an Eclipse winner whose career was curtailed by injury. A nice colt that has a pretty good foundation and will hopefully debut at Saratoga. Has plenty of scope and there is a lot to like about this colt.
Coasting Smart Strike x Cat Cay
My favourite foal from this crop, although ‘favourites’ aren’t necessarily a reflection on her ability. Half sister to a minor winner and the useful Abaco. Smart Strike has matched well with the broodmares and will, with any luck, produce a good one down the road.
Covert Ops Smoke Glacken x Collusion
Has had plenty of works and is due to debut at Belmont. Dam was a lightly raced maiden that lacked scope and was retired soon after she proved to have little ability on the track. Collusion has been bred to sprinter type sires in an attempt to get an earlier 2yo.
Sea Island Pulpit x Resort
A full sister to the enigmatic Sightseeing. The cross with Seeking the Gold that had worked so well with Our Country Place wasn’t replicated with Resort, although Tourism remains in the broodmare band for the time being. It would be so sad to see the Helvetia family come to an end and so fingers crossed for this gorgeous filly.
State Flag Street Cry x Salute
3rd foal and continues to progress steadily in his works. Salute has yet to produce a runner, although there has been some bad luck along the way. This colt is the first from his sire and a May foal.
Spare Change Bernardini x Finder’s Fee
Last foal and a half sister to 4 minor winners. It will be interesting to see whether the sire can upgrade on the dam, who although sadly missed, has proven to be a disappointing broodmare.
Raise the Flag Awesome Again x My Flag
From a sire that has turned out to be a huge disappointment for the Phipps family and a mare that hasn’t got close to replicating her first two foals. That said this filly has plenty of scope and could be anything as a 3yo and beyond.
Gracious Gift Giant’s Causeway x Heavenly Prize
Heavenly Prize is another mare that got off to a terrific start but has tailed off as the years have passed. Barren to Dynaformer and Henny Hughes, this filly is worth mentioning as the last remaining foal from her dam. Distinctively and Enhancing were sold privately to the same bloodstock interests last year, so hopefully this filly can show a little more speed than her female siblings. Is being brought along slowly and will hopefully develop into a nice filly over time.
Gloat Mr Greeley x On Parade
Half sister to 3 winners. The dam is a sister to a champion and made her 2yo debut in the fall. This filly has a lot more scope than her dam and it isn't anticipated that she will run any time soon.
Trophy Wife Giant’s Causeway x Pleasant Home
3rd foal from a late developing race mare, with the first two having never raced. This filly is beginning to come along nicely since shipping up to Saratoga.
Party of Interest Bernardini x Search Party
Half sister to 3 winners and from a stakes placed dam who loved Aqueduct. Mr. Janney has just six 2yo’s from this crop and it would be fun to see this filly develop a liking for the dirt. The A. P. Indy line over the Mr Prospector line has worked well and we could see this filly at Saratoga if she continues to progress.
But You Promised Broken Vow x Western Humor
Will likely show more of a penchant for the turf and is the first from Broken Vow. Half brother to a winner and out of an unraced dam who was a half to Coronado’s Quest.
Happy Now Mr Greeley x Meghan’s Joy
Half sister to a couple of Gr.3 winners and the improving Seal Cove. Unlikely to race this year but a nice prospect for the future.

Really kind of surprisingly good 2nd for Trade today in his 2yo debut, given the statistic posted here not too long ago about Shug's lack of success with debuting dirt 2yos. Trade was outrun and last early, but closed pretty well off the turn to end up beaten just over a length despite Solis not really getting after him with the whip at any point.

One of the 2yo's that wasn't mentioned given that the mare was culled last year and he is a half brother to a couple of minor winners. Big, muscular type that hasn't been asked to do much in his works. Hopefully the encouraging result augurs well for some of the other earlier 2yo's. Covert Ops was a healthy scratch.

Imagining (08c) Giant's Causeway x Daydreaming just ran a very nice second - was gaining with each stride - at Belmont in a MSW on the turf.
Edit - Please disregard the following as I was thinking of Imaging when I said this --- Didn't seem rank today as he had in his other starts.
Also, forgot to post that Abaco once again finished second in her race on the 8th. Also a MSW, pulled off the turf and sloppy. Didn't get to see this one, but chart says that she was gaining late.
Thanks Cladan for the information on the 2 year olds and some of the breedings that took place this year.

I'm pretty sure that was Imagining's debut. If it was it was huge, he was caught very wide and just missed getting up, while probably best. No real shocker he debuted so well as the dam won her debut by seven lengths. A pair of very nice runner up debuts for the stable this weekend and hopefully both can win next out.
Also, don't see any comments about Boisterous. Gets Gr I black type and I thought ran really well. Don't think many if any US based horses would have beaten Cape Blanco yesterday and Gio Ponti is still a bona fide superstar. Boisterous looks like a legitimate graded stakes horse. Hope to see another Gr I shot in the Sword Dancer.

He had some trouble too. Took a good bump early and was wide all the way. Going longer should be good, he galloped out impressively.
I wonder if they will try the dirt at Saratoga?
So 4 runners this weekend no winners but all 4 in the money, 3 seconds and a third. Not to bad. Hopefully all 4 are set up for a good run at Saratoga.

Also Trader ran a great race yesterday a firster. 2 year old got up for second. How often does Shug run 2 year olds before Saratoga........not too often.

Pender Harbour gives him his first classic winner. All this success from a relatively small crop. Unfortunately, his mares bred have been declining since his first year at stud, from a modest 44 to only 23 last year.

Party of Interest will be the first 2yo to run at Saratoga on friday. Two of the other fillies are out of mares bred by the family, so it should be a fun race to watch.
There are no firm plans for Air Support at the moment, although the Saranac and Secretariat Stakes will be strongly considered. It was exciting to see the colt run so well; two Gr.3's and a Gr.2 is not too shabby at this stage of his career. It may be worth mentioning that Claiborne does not have a Mr Prospector line stallion on the roster at present. Quite a few runners to look forward too at the end of the week, so i wish everybody a great weekend.

Still, at this point in his career he seems like a better type than any of those three, is certainly better-bred than any of them, and if he gets a Gr-1, should have a decent market. Congrats on the win.

Hi Roar!
We're excited and will be there tomorrow. Poor Buzzy has that long walk over in 95 degree heat today and tomorrow. Hope he gets some help.
For those of you coming up from downstate, exit 14 is down to one lane each way right now and that is the exit fans typically use for the track. DOT is working on it but it may not be back to normal this meet. You may want to consider getting off at exit 13 and driving north on Route 9 or driving up to exit 15 and doubling back to the track via back roads, though there may be a traffic jam when you hit 14. Allow extra time regardless.
