Gorgeous, Gin! Devil May Care has Rachel's eye. If only you could tell by the whites of their eyes...

I put up only 6 tonight. I'm just tuckered out. But there are a couple of new horses in that same album.

I have more. Maybe if I get a second wind tonight, I can add a couple more.

Great pictures Gin!

Rachael looks like she got "bigger"! Likes the camera

Devil May Care looks ready to "rumble". Is she a big filly vis a vis the colts?

Here's Buckleupbuttercup ... such a purty day.

Also, here's a shot of the track at Churchill. You'll never see a footprint that sinks down only this much at any other track that I have ever been to .. sealed or not.

Great pics Lydia! Thanks for sharing! But I have to say...how do you have the energy to even post anymore? LOL j/k! I hope you had a wonderful weekend!

BTW, I wonder if there are any shots from the roof? I remember during the coverage from overhead of the horses before the race and their reflections in the water on the track, it looked sooo cool! Surely someone on the roof would have gotten some cool shots of that.

BH and DRF had people on the roof. So did SI. So they are probably out there somewhere. Look for BH and TT to have stuff up sometime today I'd guess.

155,000 people. It could have been a lot worse and who knew the sun actually would come OUT for the big one. Amazing, to stand there all day in crappy weather and have it get better instead of worse.

Of course, it's crappy out this morning too.

Yeah, I was really surprised there were so many people there! But then, it's the derby :) I'll def keep my eyes open for any shots and share if I see what I saw on the tv, it looked cool with the horses reflections on the water.

The weather is LOUSY this morning, worse than yesterday. We've had almost 2 inches of rain here in the Versailles area since midnight. So we've had a little over 3 inches of rain this weekend so far. We have a small creek that seperates our neighbor's place from ours, and it usually runs very shallow. It's threatning to come out of the banks the further back on our property you go - and i am sure it's flooded where I can't see past the woods. I hope the creek doesn't flood! It won't affect our house, but it'll kill our garden...

Great shots! Thanks for sharing them. I have just one question though. In the picture of Borel and Super Saver, what is on the ground by/under the rail? Are those cameras? Or is it mud kicked up?

Thanks!

Those black objects under the rail are remote cameras. They are triggered by someone standing in the vicinity (usually on the turf course somewhere) pressing a button at the end of a long cable or by a photographer who can be standing across the track with the other half of the remote system attached to his own camera.

When he presses the release on the camera he's holding, it triggers the camera under the rail so the photographer can, if it all works as planned, get the side view plus a head on shot all at the same time.

Remotes are a pain. They often work fabulously well or not at all. What will usually screw up your shot is that you have it set to pick up horses three or four paths out, but the winner will be closing out in the 6 or 7 path so what you can get are great shots of a horse who actually is finishing second or third.

People use a variety of lenses depending on the kind of shot they are looking for. Something very wide angle which usually skews the look of the horse, but gets the background (read Twin Spires) in the shot or they'll use a longer lens (200, 300, 400mm etc.) to get a more dramatic look.

I was actually wondering on Saturday, how does everyone keep their remote cameras safe on a day like that? Obviously there were probably a lot of trash bags over the cameras until a minute or so before one of the races, but is that good enough? I was just curious, and since the mention of these came up, figured I'd ask!

I think if you look at the photos, there are bags over the important parts, kept in place by rubber bands, duck tape and so forth.

Whether people shot all the races using their remotes, I don't know, but that'd be a lot of bagging and unbagging and honestly I didn't pay attention to what they do because I don't do remotes.

Ask someone on Facebook?

Thanks for the photo of Mona de Momma, Gin. Even all mud-splattered, she sure looks good winning here. I've been following her since she broke her maiden last year at Del Mar, and am really glad she stepped it up here to win such a nice stakes race.
