Photographers working for the FSA/OWI were sent out to photograph the effects of the Depression and, later, the war effort, on rural and small-town America. Some of them were color slides. And they are amazing evocations of another era:

If you are interested in these types of photographs, you should take a look at the work of Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans. There were a bunch of other photographers involved in the movement, but those two are probably the most famous. As I majored in photography, I had to learn a LOT about this era, which (if you want to Google it) was called the "FSA" or "Farm Security Administration" movement.
