Interesting. If he was for sale, I would have thought a PA or NY farm would step up. I like him but I'm not breeding to a MD stallion in a state with no race incentives....
He's a decent value for a pure breed to race regional program.

i wonder if shamrock will honor breed-back seasons to him?

The way I read the Thoroughbred Times article is that Shamrock Farms already owned part interest in him and bought out the remaining:

If his terms are S&N why would it matter?

This was done a couple of weeks ago, but apparently could have been done several months ago.
Gators is still at Bonita. Cherokee's Boy went to Murmur last year. St Averil is in Australia and Fantasticat ... hmmm, is he being sold or was he sold. I should know, but I can't recall.
My mare was booked to Outflanker last year, but because she foaled in May, I decided not to breed her. Lots of people are very happy he's staying put.
Northview added two to their Maryland roster. Pokeyman, you might want to read the story by Joe Clancy. There are some ideas being tossed about to improve the Maryland breeding program which Joe didn't really go into, but they'll likely be discussed in the coming months.

it matters if payment was made up front.

If written for a discount for early payment with a breed back option, then it should be written that a refund would be in order from the contracted party if the stallion is not available?

Actually, the slots money is starting to have an effect on Maryland racing as of yesterday (2/1/11) the daily purses at Laurel were increased. If you look at the drastic reduction in the number of Maryland-bred foals the last several years you will see that soon there will be a large (and increasing) pot of money with a little pool of Maryland-breds to distribute it to.

Are they offering MD restricted MSW and Allowance races yet (in addition to the MD million races)?
I don't even see a website for the farm? How can you market a stallion without a website in todays era? He is not on either stallion directory either (on-line versions).....

No they aren't. If you go to the Maryland Horse Breeders Association website http://marylandthoroughbred.com/breeders/ you can get the scoop on the Maryland-bred Fund details but basically, most of the races in Maryland are open with the exception of a few Stakes. Usually, there is a supplemental purse if the winner is a Maryland-bred. For instance, this Saturday's Marshua Stakes at Laurel has a guaranteed purse of $50,000 with an additional $25,000 if the winner is a Maryland-bred. There are Stallion, Owner, and Breeders' bonuses paid out. In addition, a winner of a race in Maryland gets the same bonuses. For MSW races, an additional $5000 bonus is added to the winning purse if a Maryland-bred wins it.

Ok. Thanks. But, sounds like you still have to compete in open company to get any bonus awards.......which is tough if you don't own a Smart Strike or Dynaformer kid.

There's a reason he wasn't in the stallion directory. It had nothing to do with him or his new ownership/farm affiliation. It's not rocket science to figure out why he wasn't in the stallion directory ... but IIRC, Outflanker is advertised in the Feb MAT.
It doesn't really matter if your horse is by Smart Strike or Outflanker ... you have to WIN the race in order to get the bonus. Plenty of MD-breds by MD stallions get those bonuses.
One of the things they may be looking into is adding restricted races and paying back beyond just the winner. I believe this is true ... that Maryland breeders are paid faster than any other state-bred program. That's worth something. I earned some owner/breeder awards and it sure was nice getting those bonuses only a week or so after the races. ;-)

Just to update, Outflanker is advertised in the February issue of Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred ... full page ad, page 39.
