This cool looking critter lives just a couple of miles from me so I went over to photograph her this morning. She and the puppy were adorable together. Puppy (Knacker) seems to have caught on to the whole fence idea ... run like hell inside, safe outside.

Saw some Fionas when I spent 3 weeks in northern Scotland in 2001 -- although most of the Scottish Highland cows I saw were red, as in Kennedy's avatar.

Gotta say, I think Fiona will not be happy enduring a Maryland summer!

Good shots!

Really? Hadn't thought of that although I'm guessing they didn't bring her over from Scotland. I'll have to ask them where they got her.

She's kinda yak-like:becky:

How come your gallery is in a foreign language....Dutch, I think?

Not that they're cows per se, but my two favorite bovine specimens are Longhorns and the Santa Gertrudis. Love the Kings Ranch. Cool, cool place to visit.

For the first time in all the years I've had a gallery web site, I allowed "comments". Big mistake. All but one of the 10-15 comments were spam of a wide variety.

The kicker was that one person actually said "why are there so many spammers here" and then posted there own spam link. I quickly got rid of the "comment" option. I've always thought comments were unnecessary anyway .... but I was willing to see what kind of comments I'd get.

So when MM said she was seeing the site in another language, that was going to be it for me and web sites. Mine isn't even out there on any of the search engines so it perplexes me why even the smallest spammers would be interested in it. Well, if you know the name of the site, you can find the gallery, but if you search for images of say John Henry, my sites usually don't come up even though he's there.

I wish I could explain why it was showing up in another language last night. That was strange.

Grew up down the road from the last working dairy farm in my town. No matter how bad you are feeling, I can't help but feeling good looking at a cow. I have seen some Scottish Highlands at a farm one town over, very neat looking, although I do feel bad for them in the summer.

I love cows my family had a dairy farm for 35 years and my uncle is going to be starting it up again this year! I can't wait. I haven't been able to bring myself to go into an empty barn it's too depressing.

I must say every year when we have the State Fair, I do make a point of walking through the "cow palace", just walking around seeing all of them. Some of them are so much bigger than city folk could possibly imagine.

I chatted with a kid last fall about his project. He was going in for the Championship as I recall. He was so proud of that calf. I really do enjoy seeing the pigs, goats, lambs too. That's what the fair is all about! That and the best pies and jams and jellies ... ;-)

Great pictures Gin! Our barn helper's family has a dairy farm and I love driving by and seeing their cows! Your photos are always wonderful!

I do! I grew up raising and breeding Holstein dairy cattle. Loved it to death.
I even participated in state dairy judging contests. I know what a great looking dairy cow should look like.
This one blows me away. Almost perfect IMO.

Is that how cows are shown ... with their heads up in the air like that? I'm not sure I would have actually sat down and watched them being judged because I wouldn't know a good cow from a bad one.

But it appears to be the standard for photographing them just as there is a standard for a good horse conformation shot.

So what does having the head in the air showcase?

Love the photos though. Like Holsteins, Angus and Herefords.

I WANT a Jersey cow as a pet. They are sooo soft.

Here's another one ... he wasn't too sure of me. I appeared from out of nowhere, waiting for some horses who were training next door, and he really didn't trust me.
