And I'm telling you ... Seeing him in the paddock and how he ran the last 2 races ... If he stays healthy, I wouldn't be surprised to see him do really well and get some more wins before the year is out.

The guy looks FANTASTIC and he's SO calm and professional. If it's possible to finally have the light turn on at age 8, I think it just might have.

Need to go through my pics, and once I do, if I have one of him ... I'll post it here. :)

The $150,000 San Luis Rey, scheduled for 1 1/2 miles on turf, could be run on a course that has some give to it, since there is a 70-percent chance of rain on Sunday, according to The Weather Channel. There were just eight nominees to this race, and as few as five could start, led by Slim Shadey, who won the San Marcos on Feb. 11, his second win in three starts since arriving from his native Britain.

Simon Callaghan, the trainer of Slim Shadey, also is expected to run Falcon Rock, who has lost 14 straight races since capturing his United States debut in March 2010. Falcon Rock was third in the Grade 1 Hollywood Turf Cup in November, but was last of five most recently in a second-level allowance.

Others expected for the San Luis Rey are Bourbon Bay, who was fourth to Slim Shadey in the San Marcos, as well as Hog’s Hollow and San Marcos runner-up Utopian.

Fordangshore (Forest Danger) rallied from last to first to take the $75,000 Bensalem for older male sprinters at Parx Racing on Tuesday. Piloted by Kendrick Carmouche, the five-year-old seized control a furlong out and drew off to a 2 3/4-length tally. Final time for seven furlongs over a fast track was 1:15 3/5. Even-money favorite Flat Bold ran fourth. Owned by trainer Michael Trombetta and Ted Julio, Fordangshore was a four-time allowance winner prior to making his stakes debut in the Grade 2 General George Handicap on February 20 at Laurel, where he ran a respectable fifth. With this initial stakes score, his career mark now reads 13-6-3-0, $195,370.

Yeah!! This was fantastic!! Glad to see it mentioned here.

I was in the paddock for that race supporting Tiz Victorious with Henry Moreno, but I noticed St. Joel when he got back to running again 2 or 3 months ago.

When I saw him in the paddock, he looked fantastic! He's a great looking horse. Great physical definition.

Henry(Tiz Victorious's trainer) couldn't take his eyes off of St. Joel or quit talking about him. Was late getting his jock on his horse because he had his eyes on St. Joel.

St Joel, even though he is an 8 year old, was only running in his 14th career race. Seems he just races a few times a year on average. Not sure if it's injuries or not.

Anyway ... His Beyers were right there with the best in this field and he ran a respectable race his last out at a much higher level. And his Beyers have always been consistent too.

These factors along with how he sparkled in the paddock and the fact that he's always caught my eye. Plus I have a soft spot for elder maidens, made me HAVE TO bet him for this race!

No way I could miss betting him if he broke his maiden and I had this STRONG feeling today was his day!

12-1 ... Not too shabby! As happy as I was to win that bet, I was MUCH happier see his special day finally come at age 8! It was thrilling and awesome! :becky:

He REALLY looked great leaving the track after the race too. I was SO happy for him.

For those who may be reading this, I would HIGHLY suggest watching the replay of his race at Calracing.com ... He really was impressive winning this race. It was no fluke win. He pretty much pressed the pace throughout and busted through the last furlong and coasted to the win. It's was pretty damn stylish!

HIGHLY recommended.

Gonna keep following this guy closely. He's a great story and a real looker. Seems like a very sweet and professional horse too. Here's to continued success for him! :)

(Also ... For the record, St. Joel went off at 105-1 in his race prior to this win.)

[Trainer Charlie] Lopresti said he also is pleased with his two other standouts in the handicap division, Successful Dan and Wise Dan. Both worked earlier in the week at Keeneland and are progressing well, he said.

“We’re hoping an allowance race on opening day [April 6] will fill for Successful Dan,” said Lopresti. “And we’re on the fence whether Wise Dan will go in the [April 14] Commonwealth or later in the meet in the Ben Ali.”

Successful Dan finished first in the 2010 Clark Handicap at Churchill before being disqualified to third. Wise Dan won the Clark last fall. Both are geldings bred and owned by Morton Fink.

Well ... My boy St. Joel did pretty damn well in his 1st out against winners as an 8 year old!

He finished a fast closing 3rd in a full field of 9. Was full of run at the line too! :)

He was 28-1 too! Nothing wrong with a 28-1 show horse. :becky:

Looking for an even better showing from him next out! ... but I'm expecting his odds to drop unfortunately. :(

I spoke with Kevin(Krigger) before the race and he was very optimistic with St. Joel. He thought he had a real shot at winning with him and said he has been training, to quote him "Great!"

Successful Dan wins in return

One race earlier, Successful Dan ($6.20) made quite an impression in his return to action, capturing a $64,659 allowance by a length over late-closing Golden Yank. A 6-year-old gelding, Successful Dan was making his first start since finishing first (but disqualified to third) in the 2010 Clark Handicap at Churchill.

"This is a serious horse," said his jubilant trainer, Charlie Lopresti. "I love Turallure, and I love Wise Dan, but this is my best horse."

Successful Dan, bred and owned by Morton Fink and ridden by Julien Leparoux, was always prominent when contesting the pace outside of Noble's Promise, who gave way late when finishing three-quarters of a length behind Golden Yank. The winning time for the Beard Course distance of seven furlongs and 184 feet was 1:27.90 over Polytrack.

I've never had any interaction with Marty Jones and actually wouldn't even know him if I saw him. Somehow even though he's quite successful out here, he's eluded my interaction.

Just a couple of days ago, I was thinking of him and wondering what he is up to. I can't wait to see him and his hijinks back on the track.:)



Yeah ... I'd been wondering about him for a while. I remember him from his very first race as a 2 year old. I remember seeing him at the track and seeing his name and thinking how peculiar it was. I love odd names like that. So I started following him from day one. He was pretty good at the start, but I never anticipated that he'd become as good as he did. So that's been very cool.

I was thinking they probably retired him or something, but he's back on the work tab and obviously gearing up for his home track. So here's to his picking up where he left off. :becky:

Stakes standouts in claimer

The second race here Thursday might be a $32,000 claiming race at six furlongs on Polytrack, but two of its participants, Silver Timber and Kelly Leak, have known far greater glory in recent times.

Silver Timber, an earner of more than $750,000, is a six-time stakes winner who captured the Grade 3 Woodford here in 2009 and 2010 and ran back in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint both years.

Kelly Leak has earned nearly $840,000, the bulk of it by winning the Sunland Park Derby in 2009, when the purse was $900,000 but the race was still ungraded. Finishing fourth behind Kelly Leak in that race was Mine That Bird, who romped in the Kentucky Derby in his next start.

Welker’s [Undrafted] doing well

Speedy New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker is known in the NFL for being difficult to catch, a trait also seen in his racehorses this meet at Keeneland.

In Thursday’s opener, Welker’s 2-year-old Undrafted used his quickness to dominate a field of maidens, winning by three lengths and racing 4 1/2 furlongs in a quick 50.74 seconds.

“He’s a great guy,” trainer Wesley Ward said of Welker. “He’s been very lucky. He’s won a lot of races, probably half his starts.”

Asked if Welker visits his horses very often, Ward responded, “Does he ever; he loves ‘em.”

Undrafted, a 2-year-old gelded son of Purim, was named by Welker, who races under the stable name King 9 Stables, Ward said. Welker, an eventual Pro Bowler, was not drafted coming out of college at Texas Tech.

Like Welker, Undrafted was someone overlooked by most, paying $14.40 – a price rarely seen a winning Ward-trained juvenile at Keeneland.

In an interesting coincidence, Undrafted’s debut came on the first day of the 2012 NFL draft.

Grade 1 Clark Handicap winner Wise Dan (Wiseman's Ferry), an eye-catching 10 1/2-length winner when returning in the Grade 3 Ben Ali Stakes on April 22, breezed four furlongs in :48 over the Polytrack at Keeneland on Tuesday. The five-year-old gelding has reeled off three straight graded stakes wins for Charles Lopresti and is headed to the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap on June 16.

Yeah!! This was fantastic!! Glad to see it mentioned here. :)

I was in the paddock for that race supporting Tiz Victorious with Henry Moreno, but I noticed St. Joel when he got back to running again 2 or 3 months ago.

When I saw him in the paddock, he looked fantastic! He's a great looking horse. Great physical definition.

Henry(Tiz Victorious's trainer) couldn't take his eyes off of St. Joel or quit talking about him. Was late getting his jock on his horse because he had his eyes on St. Joel. :)

St Joel, even though he is an 8 year old, was only running in his 14th career race. Seems he just races a few times a year on average. Not sure if it's injuries or not.

Anyway ... His Beyers were right there with the best in this field and he ran a respectable race his last out at a much higher level. And his Beyers have always been consistent too.

These factors along with how he sparkled in the paddock and the fact that he's always caught my eye. Plus I have a soft spot for elder maidens, made me HAVE TO bet him for this race!

No way I could miss betting him if he broke his maiden and I had this STRONG feeling today was his day!

12-1 ... Not too shabby! As happy as I was to win that bet, I was MUCH happier see his special day finally come at age 8! It was thrilling and awesome!

He REALLY looked great leaving the track after the race too. I was SO happy for him.

For those who may be reading this, I would HIGHLY suggest watching the replay of his race at Calracing.com ... He really was impressive winning this race. It was no fluke win. He pretty much pressed the pace throughout and busted through the last furlong and coasted to the win. It's was pretty damn stylish!

HIGHLY recommended.

Gonna keep following this guy closely. He's a great story and a real looker. Seems like a very sweet and professional horse too. Here's to continued success for him! :)

(Also ... For the record, St. Joel went off at 105-1 in his race prior to this win.)

Interesting to see that my buddy, St. Joel, who broke his maiden at 8 years old a couple of months ago is nominated to this Sunday's Round Table Handicap at Hollywood Park.

Seems like quite a jump to me, but I'll be pulling for him hard if somehow he is actually entered! :)

Just thought it was really interesting that off of a maiden win at age 8, they'd aim for a stakes race 2 races later.

Well ... It's official! My boy, St. Joel, IS slated to run in The Round Table Stakes this Sunday!

Two races ago, this 8 year old broke his maiden and now he's in a Stakes race!

He may finish last, although I'm hoping he hits the board as this field isn't ultra-tough, but I'm gonna be rooting him on hard anyway!

Woodbine: Turf works for Connaught Cup

Sunday’s feature will be the Grade 2, $150,000 Connaught Cup, a seven-furlong turf race for 4-year-olds and upward, and the turf training course was open this past Sunday in a special session for horses nominated to the stakes.

Stormy Lord, the defending champion in the Connaught Cup, and Riding the River, who just missed in the Grade 2 Play the King over seven furlongs of turf here last summer, were the only two horses to breeze over the firm going.

Regular rider Justin Nixon was in the irons as Stormy Lord went in 59.20 seconds and galloped out six furlongs in 1:12.60 for trainer Ian Black.

Riding the River, trained by Dave Cotey, was clocked in 1:02.80 and galloped six furlongs in 1:15.40 under Todd Kabel, who has the call for the Connaught.

Ready’s Rocket out indefinitely

Ready’s Rocket, an 11-time winner over the Churchill Downs main track, has suffered a soft-tissue injury and will be sidelined indefinitely, trainer Tim Glyshaw told track officials last week.

Ready’s Rocket, a 9-year-old gelding by More Than Ready, apparently suffered the injury to his right front ankle when breezing last Wednesday.

“His future racing career is uncertain,” said Glyshaw.

Ready’s Rocket has won 20 races from 74 career starts, most notably the 11 at Churchill, which is the most here since Equibase started keeping such data in 1991.

Gelding earns big figure

The biggest Beyer Speed Figure recorded here over the last few weeks was not in a stakes race, but in a first-level allowance at 6 1/2 furlongs. Golden Frontier, a 4-year-old gelding owned by George Fister, earned a 107 Beyer in winning May 24 by 11 1/4 lengths.

“We’re going to go next in the Kelly’s Landing,” an overnight stakes here the weekend of June 23, said trainer Jim Dodgen. “We’ve gotten a lot of offers on the horse ever since he broke his maiden at Oaklawn [on March 31], but I don’t think George is interested in selling.”

Orphan Brigade makes 100th start

Orphan Brigade, an 11-year-old winner of 27 races and $792,970, will make the 100th start of his career in Friday’s eighth race at Louisiana Downs. It is a $5,000 claiming sprint. He was seventh at this level in his last start May 18, when he set the pace and finished seventh lengths back for a Beyer Figure of 59.

Orphan Brigade, whose best career Beyer is a 108, is a three-time stakes winner who won his career debut in June 2003. Last year at the age of 10 he won three of 14 starts and finished second in five other races. Orphan Brigade is gelding by Roar.

Gerald and Susan Kresa's King Kreesa (King Cugat) took Sunday's $75,000 Spectacular Bid Division of the New York Stallion Stakes in wire-to-wire fashion at Belmont, winning by five lengths. Sent off at odds of nearly 4-1, the Jeremiah Englehart trainee completed the seven-furlong contest over good turf in 1:22 2/5, ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr. This win marked the three-year-old gelding's first stakes victory, who now has a lifetime record of 4-2-1-0, with earnings of $77,620.

Ruler On Ice still hunting win

Among those on hand during training hours Monday morning at Belmont Park was Kelly Breen, the trainer of 2011 Belmont Stakes winner Ruler On Ice.

Ruler On Ice shipped over from his Monmouth Park base to upset last year's Belmont at 24-1 for Breen and owners George and Lori Hall, rallying from just off the pace to a three-quarter-length decision over fellow longshot Stay Thirsty. Unfortunately, that was the last time Ruler On Ice, a son of Roman Ruler, has visited the winner's circle.

Ruler On Ice has lost all six of his starts since winning the Belmont, his best performances over the past year third-place finishes in the Breeders' Cup Classic and Grade 1 Haskell and a second in the Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby. He has not started since finishing a non-threatening eighth four months ago in Gulfstream Park's Grade 1 Donn Handicap.

Ruler On Ice had his first work since the Donn on Sunday morning at Monmouth, where he went three furlongs in 36 seconds.

"I didn't expect him to go that fast," said Breen, who currently has four horses stabled at Belmont. "We just decided to give him a break after the Donn and freshen him up. Right now I have nothing picked out for him. I'm just looking forward to getting him back to the races again."
