Gosh I miss her racing but it's so good to see her in such a great place. Getting all fat and prego! lol She still looks beautiful though. I agree, greatness wise she's right up there with Ruffian. Don't know if she could beat her, but she deserves to be ranked with her, as well as Personal Ensign, Lady's Secret, etc.

"When we came to Churchill Downs with Zenyatta, I always tell everybody it's like a celebration. You know, it was a culmination of a couple years. In that time she built a great fanbase and everyone was really in love with her. It was just a wonderful time.

[clip of the '10 Classic stretch run] You know, you always have to let go, right? It's one of the lessons you learn in life, is how to let go. So especially on the racetrack as a trainer you only have the horses for a couple of years, then you get really attached to them. So the only thing you can think of is while they're in your care you really want to do what's best for them. And then when it's time for them to go, you just have to let go and hope that everything goes well.

She's at Lane's End, she's in a wonderful spot there. She's got a great pasturemate, Tasty Temptation. We went to see her; I walked out in the paddock and Tasty comes over and gets inbetween me and Zenyatta, right? She's very protective of Zenyatta, it's really cool to see. So then Zenyatta is laying down in the field and Tasty Temptation is standing over her, guarding her like Zenyatta's her foal. So it's really cool, they got a great relationship out there."

Thanks for the link to the ESPN article on Zenyatta and Blame, islandgirl. Just wonderful, and I liked the paragraph near the end by the author on how we try to not get attached to a racehorse, but just can't help it. She explained my feelings exactly.

I know. I think we just "connect" with some horses, just as we do some people. I and many others connected with the Big Z. Though I have other favorites I follow, she was different.

Reading that Claire Novak article about Blame and Zenyatta article made me smile. Nice to hear that Blame gets fan letters too and has a sweet temperament like. If he becomes a solid stallion, you never know if he gets a date with Zen in the shed. One year later, and I still view the 2010 BC Classic as a great race.

I haven't really spoken of Zenyatta for awhile now. I still look at the bobblehead on top of my TV and occasionally check news on her or the Facebook account. I miss that horse. I was never really gutted she lost in her last race because there were things that I wished John Shirreffs did to campaign her better last year prior to the BCC. Only horse I felt could beat her was BLAME and it did happen with a wonderful ride from GG. Had she been put on real dirt races and not 8.5F synth F/M races, perhaps the result in the BCC would be different even if say she lost prior to it. But they wanted to protect that streak. And of course we can question Mikey's ride. But oh well! *shrugs* It is what it is. So much potential wasted on F/M synth races, but I no longer dwell on them anymore when you think of the amazing journey she gave us. She still had a great career no matter how you look at it and 2010 was extremely fun just following her with connections that are extremely charitable. You win some, you lose some. She lost one.

I'd still put Zenyatta in the Top 30 greats. Don't care if she ran on mostly synth. I won't put her in the Top 10 like Horse Racing Nation did no matter if I am a big fan. I won't put her higher than Swaps or Bold Ruler. But she is probably higher than say Whirlaway and Alydar. I saw Cigar too, but perhaps my West Coast bias tells me Zenyatta was better, but only slightly. Cigar had better campaigns, but I think Zen might be even more talented but was unfortunately never pushed hard enough to show it. Such a shame we never got to see her stretch out her wings on dirt more. But she never took a day off at work. You can't always say that for most greats on their preferred surface. A consistent-winning CLOSER where they are at the mercy of the pace. That is RARE to find on any surface.

Stall Jr.: “I studied the replay. Mike Smith had a clear shot. He hit Zenyatta either 21 or 23 times with a whip. That tells me he had plenty of track in front of him if he had enough time to do that, right? And I think Garrett hit Blame three or four times.”

Loved reading these quotes! But this one..uhh bit of an exaggeration? I have watched this race over and over, Smith waved the stick at her a lot, but he actually hit her about 8-9 times. Garret hit Blame about 5-6 times.

Not that I don't respect Blame's connections, but some of those quotes make you think they were a bit jealous of all the attention Zenyatta was getting before and after the race compared to the lack of attention Blame was getting. Like they expected all the fans to switch to cheering for him because he beat her?

As a Z fan, I sort of felt the same when reading it. However, if you put yourself in their shoes, (Blames connections) you understand. Here they had just accomplished a spectacular feat...they beat the Great Zenyatta...and no one really cared. Or if a few did, they certainly were not heard from. The Z fans overwhelmed/eclipsed their sails. Poor Blame was like Birdstone or Bernardini in the Preakness. Something bigger than their win had happened simultaneously. IMO of course.

Yes. Run your horse in Grade 1 stakes for more than 1 season and you'll develop a fan base. If that isn't your plan, then please do not rain on the parade of the connections that do. :)

I saw a photo of the portrait in Steve's album. It is one of an elite athlete at their prime. Her overall stunning presence enhanced by her maximum conditioning. Talent plus training and timing.

The portrait could be used in a promotional campaign of some sort to illustrate excellence, drive, and determination. Dig-in and always move forward. Creating our reality--proactive, not reactive. Archetypal horse.

Clearly she and her Team continue to be inspirational.

We couldn't make the party (work!) but I was able to buy a poster from the Derby Museum on Sunday. Amazing! The original was still in the Great Hall or whatever they call the round hall where they show the slide show. (That thing makes me tear up every time I see it. I'm sure the racing gods would never let me own a quality racehorse, let alone a Derby or classic winner. Nobody would want to deal with that mess!)

She was a good baby for all that commotion. Zenyatta's siblings seem to be shorter backed than she is--is that Street Cry? Or just angles on cameras? Or my imagination...?

Also watched your video of Blind Luck getting cleaned up for the sale. She looked really pretty different from the photo I saw on her thread here. And sparky! Lifting those feet and even looked like she was going to rear at one point. Your next video of her fussing before the sale seems like she was on her toes.

Then watched your Unrivaled Belle. She sure is fancy beauty. Her face markings give her a look of being dish-faced.

All such pretty fillies. Thanks for sharing your work with us, Mary.

Stall comes across as a compete jerk with his exaggerations and attitude. Not that that is a surprise in any way.... and no, Mr. Hancock, I doubt that Blame would have easiiy pulled away from her if it was say, a mile and a half - as you suggest. Whatever.

Speaking of fluffy foals, the Nov. 5 The Rail blog about the BC Zenyatta Celebration included a sentence about the introduction of "a new limited plush toy of Zenyatta and baby that will be available next year. . ." Perhaps they're waiting to see what the foal looks like before finalizing the production of the stuffed toys?

I would not want to be the one foaling her out! We had a very grand mare deliver her first foal - which was a pretty big foal - and she ruptured and we had to put her down. But that's not to say we haven't had other first time moms do just fine. Typically first foals are smaller.

Her due date is roughly March 7, 2012. Maidens tend to go either two weeks early or two weeks late with late being more common that early. She is 256 days today and the foal is between the size of a lamb and a german shephard or 45-70 pounds.

I've seen everything from miniature horses to massive warmbloods foal, and it seems like they all do just fine. Just as with people there can sometimes be an issue, but typically they do just as mother nature intended. And you know that Z will have the best people around, if she needs assistance.

She doesn't look very big yet...just larger than we're used to seeing her. Wait until you see how huge she will get, lol.

Hellooooo baby bump!

WOW! What a difference a year makes! Last year about this time, Zenyatta was in 'horsey heaven' running free for the first time .... in the snow .... squealing with joy! Lordy, I loved that video! Well, she does look mighty preggy, which is what she's suppose to look like! You're looking good, Zenyatta. :)

She was bred back at the end of March I think so she should be due around the end of February beginning of March.

An interesting thought what if she foaled on the leap year day?

Hope not, but you're right! That would be interesting. Also, 2012 is the year of the Dragon, whatever that means for a Thoroughbred. That's 'my year' for the Chinese calendar, so hope it's a good one. :) http://www.chinavoc.com/zodiac/images/dragon_t.gif

If I had room on my walls, which I definitely do not, the painting by Christine Picavet is probably well worth whatever it costs. I have one of hers ... John Henry ... and it's beautiful. Looks like this one is at Oaklawn and what a pretty setting that is. Picavet is wonderfully talented.

http://www.zenyatta.com/bio

With her win of the 2010 Vanity International Handicap she broke the all-time North American record for consecutive wins in unrestricted races (17 wins in 17 starts).

The 2010 Apple Blossom Handicap marked her 16th win in a row, tying the record held by Citation and Cigar for consecutive victories in unrestricted races.

The site itself is much nicer than it's previous version.

The Mosses have liked Giant's Causeway in the past, but I wonder if Dottie likes the physical match in this case? He is top enick in that class of stallion.

Smart Strike and Tapit aren't particularly good with Mr. Prospector line mares. I like the cross with War Front.

Anyone know the rating on a potential Zenny & MDO mating?

She is an A nick with MDO on enicks.

Top enicks today in KY are (always shifting, i.e. Bernie was a better nick last year and might be again later this year): I bolded the stalilons that might be worthy of her.

Giant's Causeway A+++
First Samurai A+
Hard Spun A+
Cowboy Cal A+
Eskendereya A+
Giant Oak A+
Hold Me Back A+
Neko Bay A+
Noble Causeway A+
Red Giant A+
Lewis Michael A+
Bellamy Road A +
Flower Alley A
Nobiz Like Shobiz A
Sky Mesa A
Bernardini A
Wilburn A
Ghostzapper A
War Front A

There are more A nicks down the list, too, including MDO. More than nicking patterns will determine her mating, especially the physical match.

I doubt he was a "disappointment" to his owners - who read and post here, Noblelady. You should be so lucky as to own the fine strand of the tail of a horse as good as Giant Oak was. No, Z will not be bred to him or considered for 95% of the stallions on the list of nicks. And no, they can't all win all the time like she did.

Back to Zenyatta, I have liked the idea of sending her to Hard Spun and glad to see they get an A nick. Maybe if his babies really show something on the track, the Moss's will consider him. I really, really wish they would send her to MDO.

Aww, Giant Oak wasn't that bad. Graded stakes placed at two, stakes winner/graded stakes placed at three, G1 winner at four and five.

Though I agree, no way will he see Zen. Unless of course he becomes the next Storm Cat or something.

He really wasn't what I would call bad. He won nearly 1.5 mil; nothing too slouchy about that. He didn't set the racing world on fire but still, he was and is quite a fine quality horse. I love his pedigree. Roberto, Your Host, Secretariat, Blushing Groom, Northern Dancer, Raise a Native...all four generations back. I hope he's a smashing success at stud.

Me too. I have a soft spot for the Storm Cat line.

On a slightly OT note, I'm surprised at how well both GC's son Shamardal and the Dubai Millennium son Dubawi are doing as sires. Current five total G1 winners for Shamardal, seven for Dubawi. They have been the top two young sires in Europe since their first foals hit the track. I'm so happy about that, I was a fan of both when they were running...

I think getting excited with change is not out of the ordinary.. or maybe it's just mares who spent a lot of time AT the track and certain farm barns remind them of a track barn? My mare thought she was back at the track when they took her to the foaling barn for the first time. She had been at the farm for over a year and she HAD seen that barn, just had not gone to it before.

I'm actually surprised it's April; I recall at one time it was March 8, which I remember only because it's my dad's birthday. Perhaps that was her EDA for her prior mating, I don't know.

They go in so they hopefully acquire immunity to anything that's in and around the barn so when they foal the colustrum will contain antibodies to the environment. They are scrubbed every day anyway but they acclimate them.

Well, not to belabor a point, but the word "aloof" does carry somewhat of a negative connotation since it generally is defined as meaning someone is "distant or unsympathetic in manner."

Perhaps John Shirreffs might be somewhat "reserved" instead? I believe he's known for staying out of winner's circle photos.

This is exactly right. The colostrum takes at least 30 days to acclimate to the environment and the pre-foaling vaccinations. Colostrum makes or breaks a foal although I would bet the farm that the foal will get at least one and more likely two doses of plasma.

Tom Keyser
A Nina Kaiser bronze statue of Zenyatta will sit across from Kaiser's statue of John Henry at Santa Anita.

"..............My goal is to include her dapples,” Kaiser added, heaping upon herself another layer of pressure. “I’m not sure she’d be Zenyatta without those dapples.”

Kaiser’s patrons in Santa Anita management are starting to get giddy with anticipation. President George Haines sees this as a legacy moment in the history of the track.

“You’ve seen the lines of fans on weekends waiting to get their picture taken with the Seabiscuit and John Henry statues,” Haines said. “From a public relations standpoint, honoring Zenyatta in this manner was a no-brainer. In fact, it’s Santa Anita that’s honored.

“We originally thought about timing the unveiling with Zenyatta delivering her first foal in March. But the more we thought about it, the more we liked the idea of the fall meet, and having her in place when the racing world arrives for the Breeders’ Cup.”

The Zenyatta statue will be installed at the south rim of the Kingsbury Fountain, opposite John Henry, and positioned to greet fans as they enter through the main grandstand gates. She will be facing eastward, hard by the path taken by horses walking from the barns to the paddock for their races, Her pose will be instantly familiar, vibrant and stirring.

“You hope for that moment when the work comes to life for you,” Kaiser said. “It happened for me and her when I finished working one day, and in walking away I unconsciously gave her a slap on the hip and said goodbye.

“She’s my ‘War and Peace,’” Kaiser added. “It’s the hardest work I’ve ever done, and the most important.”

I love the statute of John, its wonderful. Looking forward to Z across from John.

"Toots, you better stick to beating up on your gal pals."
"Little guy, you better stick to turf. . .and hope I stick to dirt!"

And how cool will it be if the statue is unveiled at the Breeders Cup! I wish I could be there for that weekend anyway.:)

Wonder if it will be a life-size version of this tabletop bronze by Nina Kaiser, or if it will only incorporate some of this, or be something entirely different?

Just read this ... http://www.paulickreport.com/news/bloodstock/life-size-zenyatta-statue-in-the-works-for-santa-anita/ .... exciting news!!

Think we all know how she will be posed .... can't wait to see it, though! All the more reason to wish the little one arrives on March 9th.

I wouldn't mind the head held high, eye of eagles, ears pricked pose myself so she and John can look across their shadow rolls at each other....

Ah, wow. Thanks for posting, made my night! Can't wait for the Cup now! WTG, Santa Anita!

(What are the odds she'll have her ear cotton?)

If she's going to have her dapples, she's gotta have that ear cotton too!

Not long now, folks!

I cannot wait to see the little baby when he/she comes.(do they know the sex?).
I am such a fan of Berni too. I guarantee it will be a dark bay and probably have a little white if any at all. We need to start a new thread when Z foals. :becky:

They don't check the sex, so it's unknown if it's a colt or a filly...

Eblouissante is probably a real good indicator of what baby Z will look like.

The reason I asked is because they checked when Rachel was pregnant and knew it was going to be a colt. I wasn't sure if they did this with Queen Z. So, apparently they didn't check then which is OK with me. I like surprises. :becky:

I know. The Mosses don't check any of their mares, it's their tradition. God help us if it's a colt.

I sure hope it's a filly ... I want it to be a girl like Momma ... :)

No reason to want it to be a colt, it's not like Rachel and Zenny ever met on the track ... So there's certainly no rivalry to renew. :hat:

I'm hoping for a filly too, but as long as Big Z and Zenber (which is what I've taken to calling the little one. Get it? Zenber (Ember) Zenyatta, Bernardini? Umm...I'll stop now. XD lol) are healthy I'll be perfectly happy.

Even if it's a colt, it probably won't be ready by the Derby anyway.. especially if Ebby is any indicator of how this foal will develop. So, Rachel's colt could be well established and possibly retired by the time it's ready to rumble anyway haha.

Probably true, but it won't stop the crazy fans from constantly comparing them.

Probably, and the crazies would be calling Lane's End nonstop to say that Zenyatta flicked her tail so she is going into labor.

You are right.. it would be a bad idea hah

I'm hoping for a filly so that perhaps one day if Rachel's little one could become great, these two could breed and produce the ultimate cross of having Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra in one bloodline! That foal would be probably the most expensive foal in the world if it were to be sold (actually if the breeding was ever to take place). But I have a feeling she'll have a colt.

thats exactly WHY i want a colt. though unless the both have all colts, i'm sure a cross breeding is inevitable. yippee.

Same here. Agree that he or she will probably look like Eblouissante, too. Bernie's foals don't seem to have much "bling." I'd be tickled if she had a little bit of white, though.
