Fox Hill Farm's Havre de Grace was named in honor of the famous racetrack of old bearing the same name. The racetrack, affectionately nicknamed "The Graw", was a popular Maryland track in the 1920s and hosted some of the greats of the sport. Citation, War Admiral, Sir Barton, Seabiscuit, Equipoise, Exterminator, Discover, Sarazen, Sun Beau, and Crusader were among the legends who raced over the 1-mile oval.

The best horse to race at Havre de Grace, though, was the great Man o' War. It was at Havre de Grace, the late Sam Riddle said, that Man o' War ran his greatest race. That was in 1920, when Riddle's Big Red, carrying the heaviest weight he had ever been made to carry (138 lbs.), ran away with the Potomac Handicap and set a new track record for the mile-and-a-sixteenth.

Champion mare Zenyatta and Whitney champ Blame continue to lead the NTRA National Thoroughbred Poll. The top five positions remain unchanged from last week.

Zenyatta, perfect this year in four starts, again received 14 first-place votes, but saw her total points fall from 181 to 174. On Saturday, August 7 the six-year-old mare won the Clement L. Hirsch Stakes at Del Mar for the third straight year. The two-time Eclipse Award winner may make her next start at Santa Anita Park in the renamed Zenyatta Stakes,

Four-year-old colt Blame had moved into second after winning the Whitney Handicap at Saratoga on August 7. This week he again garnered four top votes and added two points over last week to total 160. His next start is expected to be the Jockey Club Gold Cup in October.

A group of men have been charged with animal cruelty and illegal gambling for operating a clandestine horse-racing circuit in San Joaquin County, Calif., that involved doping horses with methamphetamine and cocaine, The Record reported Sunday.

Nine men have been charged along with the lead defendants, Manuel Monroy and his son, Simon Monroy-Segovia, who both stand charged with more than 30 counts, including animal cruelty, horse doping, bookmaking and holding bets.

According to investigators, the clandestine horse races often drew big crowds that lined the quarter-mile straight tracks to watch so-called match races of two horses ridden by jockeys dressed in traditional racing silks.

In one event, the jockeys drove directly from the California Exposition & State Fair, where they also raced, investigators said.

Whether you’re a Quality Road fan or not, you had to feel good for Blame and Claiborne Farm, who combined not only to win the historic Whitney Handicap (gr. I), but turn back the clock to a time when homebreds ruled the sport – horses that were bred tough and ran tough.

In Blame, Claiborne has bred a near-perfect racing machine, a gritty, in-your-face type of horse who gets dirt kicked in his face and keeps coming at you – a strong-boned horse, sound, kind, and professional, who doesn’t let anything bother him. Watching him run is like going through a time portal back to the 1950s and ‘60s. Rest of Article
