Hawthorne Gold Cup (G2) - 10/8/11

Giant Oak has gotten slower and challenged from further back his last three......It is time for either rest, or more likely retirement....This is no longer a graded competitive animal, but then the MATCH UP has not evolved yet, but given the presser status of most of the winners there, a good correlation comes to mind: You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

I would look for 10 11 and 12 furlong contests, BUT they are mostly on the green these days.

I know this is off topic, but you do not have a PM option.

I believe you recommended to me reading The Great Match Race: When North Met South in America's First Sports Spectacle by David Eisenberg.

I really enjoyed that. I wonder if you might have any other suggestions for American/foreign historical books on horse racing. I also wonder if you might have any books on handicapping which you might recommend.

    Thanks.
