Re: Jockey/Trainer News - 2017

Looks like Alex Solis is really thinking about what he wants to do going forward after his retirement from the saddle. He and Richard Mandella had a lot of success over the years as a trainer/jockey combination, but he's got a lot to learn about the "other side of the equation". He sure picked a goo...

Beholder confirmed to be in foal to Uncle Mo

carole

Beholder should be getting close to foaling her Uncle Mo colt. Not today or tomorrow, but pretty soon.

Re: Best race calls ever

I was on the apron at Santa Anita, right on the finish line, for the BC Distaff last month. What a privilege it was to be there to see those two noses hit the wire together! But the thing that struck me was that it wasn't very long after Beholder and Songbird charged past me that I thought about the...

Re: Vox Populi 2016

I'm mildly surprised that Ben's Cat hasn't been mentioned here yet. I know his last few races were disappointing, but that doesn't change the fact that he's been one of the most popular horses this year that has never been in any contention for Eclipse Award consideration. It seems to me that that i...

This little guy raises questions for me. The black mane and tail says to me (in my ignorance) that he is a bay. He h...

Re: The Big Cap

Trying to remember- who was the last American male horse to win a G1 at 2, 3, and 4? I know Real Quiet did it but I feel like I'm missing some obvious ones in the interim. EDIT: Captain Steve did, 1999-2001 although the Swaps is no longer a G1. Can't find anyone else since then. Ashado was the last...

Re: Forty Niner

Thanks for the responses. I realize that I probably should have posted this question in the "Stallion News" thread, so I apologize for that. I love Forty Niner. I have to say that I've never been able to forgive Stephens for sacrificing him in that 1988 Preakness. And the thing that makes it really ...

Forty Niner

Is Forty Niner still alive? If he is, he's 30 years old this year. I know that there's members here who have knowledge of the goings-on in Japan, so I'm hoping to get an answer. I had a conversation today with a couple of trainers here at Santa Anita that pretty much scoffed at me for suggesting tha...

Re: Most under-rated horse since 2000

The term "under-RATED" is problematic, imo, in a discussion like this. It's been pointed out already that the term assumes some sort of official ranking which simply doesn't exist. The whole discussion is about opinion, and that's a good thing, but opinions are generated by so many different perspec...

Re: California Chrome

Did you miss the "sarcasm on?" :) I'm sure it was there! The San Antonio could be a mushy soft spot if Shared Belief marches through the Strub series and then takes a breather. Wonder if Bayern might head there, though, prepping for the DWC? There is no Strub Series. The San Fernando was cancelled ...

Re: Starlet Stakes (G1)

Can a six-time loser maiden win a Grade 1? Maybe. No one is very fast so maybe Danette will finally break her maiden. But it also looks likely Brandi & Maybel will run 1-2 all the way around. There is as least one precedent for a maiden winning this race. Hollywood Story broke her maiden in the Sta...

I read that Richard Stone Reeves said that Buckpasser, Secretariat, and Affirmed were the most "flawless" horses that he ever painted.

He should know.

Sorry it took me so long to respond, Flanders. Thanks so much for the information.

Another question.....does Ben Leon (Besilu) have his own farm, or does he board his mares? Sorry if that's a dumb question, but I really don't know and would like to.

Much appreciated.

Royal Delta

Does anyone know what's happening with her?

She was retired after the BC Distaff last year. I was just wondering if she was bred this year and if so, to who. It wouldn't surprise me if Ben Leon decided to give her a year off before sending her to the shed.

Thanks for any news.......

This is a wonderful picture of two giants in the game apparently watching someone they respect being inducted into the Hall Of Fame. Barbara Livingston got this shot, and I really think it's priceless.

I miss Presious Passion. ;) Ditto! Hard to believe that race was 5 years ago! It's funny how sometimes a historic race that has been run for several decades, will suddenly take on an indelible identification with the performance of one horse. 5 years later, I can't see the name of the United Nation...
