Re: Accelerate vs Justify HOTY

Slew’s times were not eye opening but his Derby and Preakness were. Had Secretariat not existed, Slew wouldn’t have needed the campaign at four to be great. On the topic of time, the horse that owns the fastest two-turn dirt mile in history was in for 10k on Monday at Del Mar and was claimed. It’s ...

Re: Accelerate vs Justify HOTY

Proof? All things are to be taken in context. There is no real way to judge this crop of 3yo’s until next year around this time. Accelerate stuck it out and kept racing after the best of his crop went to the shed. In alphabetical order, I would take Arrogate, Exaggerate, Gun Runner and Nyquist over...

Re: Mendelssohn

It does seem odd that he's been continually blasted to the front. Is he definitely retiring after this year? It would be a shame; I think he's demonstrably better now than he was in the first half of the year. Really strikes me as a horse who would thrive at four, especially if he's allowed to relax...

Re: Accelerate vs Justify HOTY

You can't tell how good a crop is during the first half of the year, and this one almost completely fell apart. Mendelssohn was the best left standing at the end of the year, but he was a complete non-factor in the Derby. In fact, I believe the only open stakes winner from the entire TC was Promises...

Re: Accelerate vs Justify HOTY

For reference RE: Accelerate's accomplishments, I believe Accelerate is the first horse to win three G1s at 10f en route to a victory in the Classic since Cigar in 1995. Moreover, to find another Classic winner with 5 or more open G1 wins on the year, one has to go back to... Cigar, again. The only ...

Re: Accelerate vs Justify HOTY

Justify's Derby was very good, and by far his best TC race. In the Preakness he was second-best to Good Magic (who was on the worst part of the track, facing outside pressure while on the lead for the first time, only beaten a length), and he would have been beaten by... probably every Preakness win...

Re: Breeders' Cup Picks and Analysis

Ha, you know think I've been betting on Gunnevera since his Florida Derby and I've never won a cent on him! I just love how he always steps up when people least expect it. He'll win his G1 some day... probably on the day I finally toss him. Wish I'd listened to you on Thunder Snow peep, that was a g...

https://www.paulickreport.com/news/triple-crown/walden-audible-would-be-big-competition-but-belmont-is-justifys-to-lose Quotes from Walden talking about how "it's different" when you've won two out of three races. Re: Accelerate vs Justify HOTY

Call me a tinfoil hatter, but Justify's win will always be a little tainted for me with the Audible situation and it bugs me that it fell out of people's minds so quickly. Maybe not enough to put an asterisk by his name in the list of Triple Crown winners, but combined with his drastically condense...

Re: Accelerate vs Justify HOTY

were i not on this forum, this part would likely not have been true for me. i don't read the comments on articles, so it would have gone unnoticed on my end. good news is it crushed the joy out of having a TC winner and made me go from very happy to "i hate this horse and everything about him"! :D ...

Re: Accelerate vs Justify HOTY

Accelerate also didn't benefit from teammates, or from his owners having a piece of many of his major contenders. HOTY means nothing to Justify- he'll be remembered, albeit not all that kindly, as a Triple Crown winner for as long as horse racing exists. Meanwhile, giving HOTY to Acclereate would ha...

Re: Breeders' Cup Watchalong Thread

Neither do I but it's an interesting puzzle to try and figure out before they announce. What's the competitive niche they want to put them in to get the best 125 mares paying what full fee? Let's start with none of the 3 are out of the box top tier stallions, imo, competing with any of the 6 figure...

Re: Breeders' Cup Picks and Analysis

Normally I try to write up the lessons I learned from (losing on) big race days, but the past two days have been utterly surreal and I'm still not sure it happened. I think my main lesson will be "don't expect that to happen again, ever." But some post-race musings: -Churchill appears to be a very f...

Re: Accelerate vs Justify HOTY

I would have voted for Arrogate because he very definitively won the championship event that year. Accelerate won the event in addition to putting together a solid resume. The best horse Justify beat was probably Audible, but that doesn't necessarily help him for... obvious reasons. Do I want Justif...

Re: Breeders' Cup Watchalong Thread

Plus, the one horse Accelerate lost to just crushed the Dirt Mile.

I don't think Acclerate beat much earlier this year, but it's not like Justify's company did much of anything in the second half of the year.

Re: Accelerate vs Justify HOTY

Disappointed by the lopsided voting; we haven't had a good HOTY fight since 2010!

I think Accelerate winning would be a game changer in the sport- for the better.
