Re: Run?

Kilian Jornet won the Hardrock 100 for the 2nd year in a row; This time running 23:28 in the counter clockwise direction. He went off course a bit (not unusual for this race) and there was much more snow pack this year compared to last. 23:28 is also a course record for this direction of the race. ...

Unquestionably the prettiest pony at Belmont that day. Here's to hoping he winds up being okay.

Re: What Were They Thinking?

Echo the "through a screen diminishes the experience" line of thoughts here. I took a couple terrible cell phone pics of the horses coming into the gate at the Belmont and after the race was over when AP was parading, but had my phone firmly in my pocket the rest of the time. I have actually felt th...

Re: What Are You Reading?

So the first chapter of Go Set a Watchman (Harper Lee) is up online at The Guardian, which is trying to make an event out of it. My main reaction is that I have no real positive or negative reaction considering that it's just the first chapter, other than a twinge that Lee wrote something almost cer...

Re: Secretariet/ American Pharoah Split Screen Belmont

So let me try to sum up this gem of a post, which was obviously alcohol induced, with the following - American Pharoah, a 2yo champion, wins the Triple Crown by beating a decent group of horses with decent times in three races where he (admittedly by the connections) got great trips and you're will...

Re: Secretariet/ American Pharoah Split Screen Belmont

This is almost certainly the dumbest thing I've seen any media outlet putting their time into for the TC reporting. No shish AP isn't Secretariat. No horse ever has been on the teletimer.

But what if they did this with AP versus Seattle Slew? "OMG Slew is so slow! What a nag!" Oy.

Re: 105 Beyer

It's good to see you posting on here again Sham, hope things are going well for you! Glad to hear that you don't think the idea is crazy- I'd also love to know if there's any compensation for that upper-end compression. I was initially thinking of Commentator's 2008 Whitney, in which he got a 120 f...

Re: 105 Beyer

From the mouth of Mr. Beyer himself: http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/american-pharoah-deserves-his-place-in-horse-racing-history/2015/06/07/80760af8-0d26-11e5-9726-49d6fa26a8c6_story.html That picture's funny -- after CC got stepped on last year, the image makes it look like the racing gods we...

Re: 105 Beyer

One thing I've wondered, perhaps someone else can clarify- aren't Beyers, by their very nature, much better at determining when a slow time is relatively fast, versus when a fast time is relatively slow? There comes a point at which a horse can't physically run any faster, no matter the track condi...

Re: 105 Beyer

This seemed like a fun thing to think/write about during my lunch break. Belmont day figures: American Pharoah (Belmont) -- 2:26.65 -- 105 Honor Code (Met Mile) -- 1:33.18 -- 112 Wedding Toast (Ogden Phipps) -- 1:40.21 -- 102 Curalina (Acorn) -- 1:35.12 -- 92 March (Woody Stephens) -- 1:21.37 -- 95 ...

Re: This is the best day

2) He kicked away, and the grandstand shuddered . I can't describe it better than that. I've been to a good number of Belmonts, and hearing the crowd scream with happiness after the wire was surreal in and of itself... but feeling the floor drop out from under me, just for a second, was a sensation...

Re: The 12th Triple Crown winner

Stop engaging. It's far easier that way. The Preakness was fun. I was on the infield around the 5/8ths pole. About 45 minutes before the race it started drizzling. Twenty minutes before the race, the deluge started in earnest. I have never, ever been rained on so hard in my life, and it was all goin...

Re: The 12th Triple Crown winner

Who'd a thunk that the day the triple crown was won would also be the day of the most depressing and bitter post on Thoroughbred Champions Nothing on the internet surprises me anymore. There has to be a Rule 34-type thing for horsepeople where any event possible has its one or two contrarian idiots...

Re: This is the best day

I saw Zenyatta lose the Classic and California Chrome lose the Belmont in person. Those are the two instances where a horse of potential history was being urged on to no avail by just about every person in the stands. Chrome was popular, flashy, fast. Couldn't do it. Zenyatta was perfection and pers...

Colt McCoy isn't awful, but he did suck in the red zone. We're still going to go 3-13 again, but at least we get to keep our draft pick this year.

Re: California Chrome to contest Hollywood Derby

I would argue whether this race increased his value or appeal to Japanese breeders. Actually, I wouldn't say 'argue,' but I'd question it. Looking at the 'top' US horses that the Japanese have imported - Empire Maker, I'll Have Another, Pyro, Roses in May, Street Sense, War Emblem, Came Home - they...
