Just heard from Scott Hansen. Awful update. He lost 15 of the 30 horses he trained, including Puig, Monster Man. #SanLuisReyDownsFire

RLT, Hansen said of his barn at SLR: "Everything burned to the ground. No tack left, it's all gone." All the 15 who survived are owned by Gary Broad and are heading to Broad's ranch in Murrietta.

Riri's gone.

We lost a 2nd horse. Riri was identified at SLR. She was tiny and mighty and we will miss her greatly. The rest of the LRF horses are accounted for. Words cannot express the gratitude to @PhilDamato11, Richie Baltas and their staffs who risked their lives for our horses.

For those in the area.

DONATIONS SOUGHT TO HELP THOSE IMPACTED BY SAN LUIS REY DOWNS TRAINING CENTER FIRE; ‘GO FUND ME’ ACCOUNT CREATED AND MUCH-NEEDED CLOTHING FOR DISPLACED WORKERS TO BE COLLECTED AT SANTA ANITA

ARCADIA, Calif. (Dec. 8, 2017)—The Stronach Group (TSG), in conjunction with Santa Anita Park and The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, has established a GoFundMe account page to help pay for hospital and rehabilitative costs incurred by those injured in yesterday’s devastating Lilac Fire, which engulfed San Luis Rey Downs Training Center in northern San Diego County. Additionally, Santa Anita is now in the process of collecting clothing items for the dozens of stable workers who were forced to flee yesterday’s flames.

The fire, fueled by fierce Santa Ana winds, was first reported at approximately 11:30 a.m. PT near Interstate 15 and state Route 76, to the east of San Luis Rey Downs. The resulting conflagration at the training center, which housed nearly 500 Thoroughbreds, has resulted in numerous injuries, equine and human, as well as an undetermined number of equine deaths.

Due to the heroic efforts of workers and first responders, all remaining horses have now been evacuated from San Luis Rey Downs, with the majority now stabled at Del Mar, which is 35 miles to the south.

Clothing items, as well as bedding and blankets for displaced workers, can be left at Santa Anita’s Association Gate, accessible via Gate 8 off of Baldwin Ave.

For those wishing to donate to TSG’s GoFundMe account to benefit those impacted by yesterday’s fire at San Luis Rey Downs Training Center, please visit santaanita.com and click on the pop-up or visit the donation site at https://www.gofundme.com/thoroughbredcare.

Coolmore Donates ‘Mo’ Season for Wildfire Relief Efforts
In an effort to aid in the response to the devastation caused at San Luis Rey Downs by the Lilac Fire, Coolmore and Mike Repole announced Friday a donation of a no-guarantee 2018 season to sire Uncle Mo, who stands for $125,000. “Everyone at Coolmore has been moved by what we have seen happen in Southern California and we hope by donating this season we will be able to provide some comfort to those who need it most,” said Coolmore America manager Dermot Ryan. All bids should be submitted in writing through the sales team at Ashford Stud (Adrian Mansergh-Wallace (adrianmw@coolmore.com, 859-327-8302) and copy Gary King (garyking@thetdn.com) by Wednesday, Dec. 13 at 5:00 p.m. eastern. Proceeds raised will be donated to the horsemen and horses affected by the tragedy through the Horses First Fund administered by the Thoroughbred Charities Of America and founded by LNJ Foxwoods.

Another unrelated matching grant has been established by a pair of horsemen. For more on that, click here.

Trainer Hansen loses 15 horses in San Luis Rey Downs fire
The impact of the tragic fire that devastated San Luis Rey Downs on Thursday was starting to be known on Friday, when trainer Scott Hansen – who had 30 horses in training there – reported that half his barn, 15 runners, had perished.

“I basically lost half my barn,” Hansen said. “It’s horrible.”

Hansen said the horses who survived were found at a number of nearby facilities, and all were on their way to or already had arrived at the farm of owner Gary Broad in Murrietta, Calif. Hansen trains almost exclusively for Broad. Of the 30 horses he trained, 29 were owned by Broad. The other horse was a homebred of Hansen’s. That horse, who was unraced, died.

Hansen said that among the horses of his who died were Monster Man, a 3-year-old son of Unbridled’s Song who won twice in 10 starts, and Puig, a 4-year-old son of Scat Daddy who was second in both his career starts against maidens. Monster Man finished eighth in the Del Mar Derby during the summer meeting in his final start.

He said a couple of the ones who survived were “burned pretty bad.”

Hansen said his assistant at San Luis Rey Downs described a grim, graphic scene on Friday. “It’s apocalyptic. Corpses everywhere,” Hansen said.

The horses of Hansen’s who survived were set free when the fire hit his barn. He said his barn “burned to the ground.”

“There’s no tack left, nothing,” he said.

Regarding Britney's tweet about the unidentified horse; I would guess that a good number of the horses at SLR were pony horses who accompanied their TB charges to and from the track. If they weren't former TB racehorses, they probably wouldn't have lip tattoos. :(

It's really sad...they may not be able to identify all the horses who were lost.
There was another tragedy earlier this week when the Creek Fire destroyed a large boarding facility near Sylmar and took the lives of dozens of horses. I was looking at an article about that incident with a few photos...and I didn't understand what I was looking at for a moment. It was the white bones of a horse skull.
You might need dental records to ID horses lost in a barn that burned to the ground. :(

Many of the 2 year olds weren't tattooed because they were chipped. I don't know how many chip readers have been used at the farms around SLR. I'm thinking microchips could be destroyed by fire.

No word on International Diva yet. Still hoping they find her at a farm in the area.

Does anybody know who this filly is? She has no name, no tattoo, and we can’t seem to find any trainer. She was found at a nearby ranch. Please contact me if a trainer can claim her

More good news and maybe a little chuckle.

Julie Clark added 2 new photos.
I wanted to let everyone know that all Desormeaux Racing horses have been located and will be headed to Santa Anita very soon. All are doing well. Only one scrape on the knee of the little guy who decided he could make his own way to Del Mar. Might have had a wild night!

We are so grateful to the groom Lopez and the assistant Shorty who safely brought 5 horses at once to the last trailer that was able to get out until the fire moved thru a little. This was no easy task as the smoke, heat and flames combined with a large group of loose horses running through the barns caused a fair amount of chaos.

The unbelievable number of people who arrived at both San Luis Rey and Del Mar Racetrack to catch, load, relocate, doctor, feed and care for all the horses affected by the fire is truly heartwarming!! Many people stayed with their trailers well into the night until every horse was moved to safety. Several local farms also opened their doors to allow horses to be moved close by and allow the drivers to go right back for more.

I came to San Luis Rey to get the staff’s belongings and it is a sobering visit. Emotions are running high by all that were part of this experience. A big thank you to all who refused to leave until the end.

A big shout out to Kevin and his staff at SLR who went above and beyond to help everyone thru this.
On behalf of the Desormeaux barn and all of our wonderful owners, thank you to all who helped to prevent this from being even more tragic than it has been. And our hearts go out to everyone affected.
