This long Kentucky Derby streak ready to fall

Most people who have even a casual acquaintance with Kentucky Derby history know that the last horse to win the Derby without having raced at 2 was Apollo in 1882.

King Zachary, who broke his maiden by nearly eight lengths at Gulfstream, will run next in the Wood Memorial per trainer Dale Romans.

He has quite the distance-oriented pedigree, being by Curlin and having Giant's Causeway, Seeking the Gold and Seattle Slew on the damside.

Looking through the entries, I can't believe Reynaldothewizard is still racing. How amazing would it be to see him repeat five years later?

EDIT: Whoops, wrong thread. I stand by the statement though ;)

Ruggero looked really good moving over the track at Meydan on Wednesday. Dunno how he'll do in the UAE Derby but he's a very nice colt.

Is Ruggero already in via points earned in the Japan Road To the Kentucky Derby races?
IIRC, the UAE Derby is included as part of the American points system, and points earned in Meydan can't be combined with points earned in either the European or Japanese 'Road' races, and vice versa.
I wonder if Ruggero's owners want to see how he does against a more international field before they commit to the Derby?

Sumahama is the Japanese points leader and there are no more points races left. Though I'm not sure if he is pointing to the Derby. He was not nominated. So yes Ruggero would be the point leader from Japan, as long as Sumahama doesn't come.

Mendelssohn might have what it takes to give O'Brien long-sought Kentucky Derby win

It’s probably fair to say that at this stage of his career – one of the best careers in racehorse-training history – Aidan O’Brien can live without winning the Kentucky Derby.

On the other hand, it’s probably fair to say he wouldn’t say no to the experience.

Gronkowski Clinches Kentucky Derby Berth
A late change in racing plans didn't bother the equine Gronkowski March 30 at Newcastle in England, where the Kentucky-bred racehorse rallied to a clear victory in the Burradon Stakes.

With the win in the final European Road to the Kentucky Derby points race, Gronkowski stayed perfect in three starts on synthetic surfaces this season and punched his ticket to the Louisville classic.

The Burradon start was actually Plan B for the connections of the Lonhro colt, owner Phoenix Thoroughbreds and trainer Jeremy Noseda. After Gronkowski won the Road to the Kentucky Derby Conditions Stakes March 7 at Kempton Park, Noseda planned to ship him to the United States for a start in either the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland or the Wood Memorial Stakes at Aqueduct.

But Feb. 23 Noseda said he'd changed his mind, in part because of a misunderstanding about the Derby qualifying points system. Points earned in the European Road to the Kentucky Derby do not cross over to the main Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard.

"We've had to change our plans due to the Kentucky Derby points system," Noseda said on his website.

I knew the points system was the main motivator.
Mendelssohn better put on his running shoes tomorrow.

Sunland Derby winner Runaway Ghost will not run in the Kentucky Derby, according to trainer Todd Fincher. Fincher is "98%" sure he has a hairline fracture in his shin. Came out of work today at Sunland sore.

Fincher: "Bad news is we're missing the big dance. Good news is there'll be no surgery and he's going to be fine."

Thanks for the updated points list. I had thought that, with Runaway Ghost's defection, that Combatant would move into 20th. Nope, still just outside the bubble in 21st. Oops.

So Hofburg is officially in, I was a little worried going into today. Wonder what choice Mott will make. Edited to say that according to this, he's running: https://www.horseracingnation.com/news/ ... ubble_123#

Worth noting that the horse he beat in his maiden, Just Whistle, won nicely at Keeneland today.

From DRF....

Irad Ortiz Jr., the nation’s leading rider in wins thus far in 2018, will ride Florida Derby runner-up Hofburg in the Kentucky Derby, according to his agent, Steve Rushing.

Ortiz Jr. replaces his brother Jose, who is committed to ride Good Magic, the champion 2-year-old of 2017 and recent Blue Grass Stakes winner, in the Kentucky Derby. Jose Ortiz was aboard Hofburg for his second-place finish to Audible in the Florida Derby.

Ortiz probably had a chance at several mounts for the Derby including Louisiana Derby winner Noble Indy, Promises Fulfilled _ whom Ortiz rode to victory in the Fountain of Youth _ and Free Drop Billy, whom Ortiz rode in the Blue Grass. Ortiz had also ridden Firenze Fire to victory in the Grade 1 Champagne last year. The aforementioned quartet did not have confirmed riders as of Sunday.
I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

Solomini to train in CA next two weeks before Ky Derby; two Derby works slotted for Justify
Solomini, third in the Arkansas Derby on Saturday, is scheduled to fly back to California on Monday and will train over the next two weeks at Santa Anita before a scheduled start in the Kentucky Derby on May 5, trainer Bob Baffert said Sunday.

Baffert said Solomini likely would fly to Kentucky either on April 28 -- one week before the Derby -- or April 30.

As for Justify, the unbeaten winner of the Santa Anita Derby and current favorite for the Kentucky Derby, he is scheduled to have two works prior to the Derby, the first of them slotted for later this week at Santa Anita, Baffert said.

First look at horses on the bubble for 2018 Kentucky Derby

Now that the Kentucky Derby (G1) scoring races are over, and all the points have been tabulated, the field has crystallized. We now know the top 19 on the final leaderboard plus the European Road invitee (Gronkowski), making for the capacity field of 20. Thus we also know those contenders just shy of the threshold – the “bubble horses” – on watch for defections.
