Frantic finish at Talladega oddly creates a letdown for fans, drivers

Dale Earnhardt Jr. climbed from his Chevy on the Talladega Superspeedway's pit road, grabbed a towel and wiped his brow. He'd just finished second in a win-or-nothing elimination scenario at his favorite racetrack, where he'd managed to overcome a miscue by his pit crew, a miscue of his getting onto pit road and a late charge through the field reminiscent of his father's legendary Talladega runs.

Despite mediocre season, Jeff Gordon just might be the Chase driver to beat

Let's cut to the Chase: Jeff Gordon has had a mediocre season.

Fortunately for the four-time Sprint Cup champion, he has had the best of mediocre seasons. The Hendrick Motorsports driver remains alive in the Chase for the Sprint Cup; he's tied with seven others atop the standings with just four races remaining.

Jeff Gordon's fairytale season reaches new heights

A grandfather clock is far better than a gold watch.

All in due time.

For now, Jeff Gordon's sublime final season as a full-time Sprint Cup driver continued to defy expectation and common sense on Sunday, as he used his ninth career win at Martinsville Speedway to collect not only the ornamental time piece that serves as its trophy but a chance at one more championship before he retires at the end of the season.

Surefire win slips away from Brad Keselowski at Texas

Brad Keselowski stepped out of his race car, walked down pit road to have a brief conversation with Martin Truex Jr. and trudged on, running his right hand through his hair dejectedly.

NASCAR's championship four a dream class

One of the strangest seasons in NASCAR history got another bizarre twist in setting the field for its championship race Sunday night at Phoenix International Raceway.

Jeff Gordon goes out with grace in finale

There were smiles and there were tears, but there was no storybook ending for Jeff Gordon.

The 44-year-old will retire after 797 races, 93 wins and four championships. An incredible first-ballot Hall of Fame career. But there will be no fifth championship as a send-off into the next phase of his career as a broadcaster and more frequent attendee of kids’ birthday parties and soccer games.

I'm happy for Joe Gibbs. He really deserves this. He gives so much to the sport and seems like a wonderful man.

Jeff Gordon with Tony Stewart on trip, calls accident 'freak thing'

Tony Stewart was having an “absolute blast” riding in the Glamis sand dunes before a “freak thing” occurred Sunday, Jeff Gordon told USA TODAY Sports on Friday.

Gordon was among a group of nine or 10 vehicles riding in the famed sand dunes with Stewart when the drivers realized the three-time NASCAR champion’s sand rail had become separated from the ride. Little did they know Stewart’s car had apparently nosed into the sand after riding over the lip of a dune, which left Stewart with a burst fracture of his L1 vertebra.

What a great finish.

2016 Daytona 500: Denny Hamlin wins in photo finish

In one of the greatest Daytona 500 finishes of all time, Denny Hamlin held off Martin Truex Jr. by less than a nose to win his first 500 – and the first for team owner Joe Gibbs in 23 years.

I'm usually bored silly by car races but this was a great final few laps! Felt like a horse race coming down to the wire. :)
Not a wholesome trottin' race, no, but a race where they sit down right on the horse!
Like to see some stuck-up jockey boy sittin' on Dan Patch? Make your blood boil? Well, I should say!

Being a Kenseth fan has been heartbreaking the past two weeks. Two lightning fast cars and two poor finishes. :( :( :(

His 37th place finish Sunday didn't help at all.

He's a driver known for his car control yet he's the only one who lost it Sunday. It's like he's cursed.

Matt Kenseth finished 7th at Phoenix. Kevin Harvick looked great Sunday. Phoenix certainly is his track.
