Cardinals on the wrong end of an early statement series

It was quiet in the St. Louis Cardinals' clubhouse Wednesday night, with players getting dressed for a short flight to Atlanta either silently or while conversing in whispers.

You would expect nothing less -- or more -- after a three-game sweep to a division rival. Teams that laugh and dance after losses have become too accustomed to it. The Cardinals are a long way from that point, if they ever get there.

A rare triple by Dioner Navarro gave the Chicago White Sox something even more uncommon: a series sweep in Toronto.

Navarro hit a go-ahead, two-run triple in the seventh inning, and the White Sox beat the Blue Jays 4-0 Wednesday night for their sixth straight win.

What's wrong with the Yankees? Quite a bit

The New York Yankees have stumbled to an 8-16 start, their worst through 24 games since 1991, and they sit in last place in the AL East.

What has gone wrong? A lot. They're failing to score, haven't hit in the clutch, and the elite bullpen hasn't mattered, because the starting pitching can't get them the ball.

MLB-worst Braves fire manager Fredi Gonzalez

Off to one of the worst starts in their history, the Atlanta Braves fired manager Fredi Gonzalez on Tuesday.

The Braves dropped to an MLB-worst 9-28 after an 8-5 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night. They haven't won consecutive games over a 5-19 span during which they've averaged 2.7 runs and hit eight home runs, a quarter of which came Monday. Four MLB players have more homers this season than the Braves, who have 11 total.

Phil's Last Homestand

How has Phil Coyne survived 80 years as an usher for the Pittsburgh Pirates? For the 98-year-old lifelong Bucs fan, it all comes down to luck -- and Oreo cookies.

Why didn't the Orioles use Zach Britton in wild-card loss to Blue Jays?

Zach Britton, his shoulders slumped, standing in the center of the Baltimore Orioles clubhouse Tuesday night, tried to come up with the right words, but like everyone else, had no answers.

Clayton Kershaw gets save as Dodgers top Nats to win NLDS

A little past midnight in Game 5 of the National League Division Series, Clayton Kershaw emerged from the bullpen to pitch in relief for the first time in seven years.

Two outs later, the only save of his major league career in the books, Kershaw's arms were raised and teammates were rushing to celebrate with a guy whose postseason performances have never carried the luster of his regular-season success.

Bad move by Roberts to pull Ruiz in the 7th just to attempt a sacrifice bunt. Ruiz could have stayed in for that and with him on the mound I don't think Washington scores another run. And the Dodgers don't empty out their closer by bringing him in early.

Got away with it for now. But, no rest for the weary.

I like Ruiz a lot. He's going to get plenty of work against the Cubs. Oh yeah that's right. The best team in baseball is waiting.

Indians align ALCS rotation; Danny Salazar unlikely to make roster

Corey Kluber is back at the top of the Indians' make-it-up-as-they-go rotation.

Cleveland will start its ace in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series against the Toronto Blue Jays, one of the few certainties Indians manager Terry Francona has as his team plays for a spot in the World Series.

Indians open ALCS with win over Jays thanks to Francisco Lindor, Corey Kluber

When the ball disappeared over the outfield wall, Francisco Lindor raised his right fist and took off.

Smiling with every stride, Cleveland's superstar-in-the-making shortstop sprinted around the bases as if he was being chased.
