Arnold Palmer was the telegenic golfer who took a staid sport to TV and to the masses.

The intersection of what could've been and what came true

The sad news arrived over the weekend in a series of booms. First, the thunderclap news that Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez and two others had died in a boating accident in the early hours of Sunday morning in Miami Beach. Then the follow-up word that rumbled in slowly at first, in the wait for confirmation, that golf legend Arnold Palmer had died that afternoon in a Pittsburgh hospital.

He really did transcend the sport. For all the good he did there
won't be enough written about him.
He really did have an army and it took me a long time
to figure out all the hate for Jack.
RIP Arnie

Service provides glimpse into Arnold Palmer's impact on golf and beyond

Arnold Palmer didn't care for funerals. The ritual made him uncomfortable. He didn't see the purpose in so many solemn faces gathering together to mourn the dead, to reminisce about a lifetime of yesterdays. Unless he felt obliged to attend, he skipped them.
