Mets bring back Jay Bruce to break baseball's hot stove cold snap

Jay Bruce is returning to the New York Mets on a three-year, $39 million contract, and my initial reaction was: Why would the Mets want Bruce when they already have Yoenis Cespedes and Michael Conforto to play in the outfield corners?

Fans may never forgive Pirates for trading Andrew McCutchen

Within minutes after former MVP Andrew McCutchen received the phone call late Monday afternoon that he was no longer a member of the Pirates, reports emerged that Pittsburgh has a multiyear agreement in place with talented closer Felipe Rivero. The sequence of events had all the look of a stage-managed leak, as if somebody within the Pirates organization was trying to distract fans from the news that McCutchen, a player once viewed as his generation’s Roberto Clemente, was being shipped out of the city.

Shohei Ohtani struggles with control in Angels debut

Shohei Ohtani's spring training pitching debut is one that he'll file under "learning curve.''

Ohtani took the mound with plenty of hype and a "B'' lineup in the field behind him in Saturday's game between the Los Angeles Angels and Milwaukee Brewers. He labored with his control and threw 31 pitches -- only 17 of them strikes -- before departing with one out in the top of the second inning and the score tied 2-2.

Mets hitter Rusty Staub, known after career for work for police and firefighters, dies at 73

Rusty Staub, the orange-haired outfielder who became a huge hit with baseball fans in two countries during an All-Star career that spanned 23 major league seasons, died Thursday. He was 73.

He died after an illness in a hospital in West Palm Beach, Florida -- hours before the start of the baseball season -- the team said in a statement. The Mets learned of the death from friends of Staub who were with him at the time, a team spokesman added.

We sure enjoyed him when he was in Detroit. Great player and a great guy. RIP Mr. Staub.

Real or Not? Bad blood brewing after Wednesday's bevy of brawls

I blame the cold weather.

And testosterone.

And the time-honored baseball tradition that goes back to the days of Old Hoss Radbourn and King Kelly: an eye for an eye, blood will have blood.

Arizona Diamondbacks' Deven Marrero loses home run after passing baserunner

Alex Avila tried falling on the sword, but first-base coach Dave McKay wouldn’t let him. The Diamondbacks had won a game in blowout fashion, beating the Dodgers for the fifth time in as many games this season, but a major topic in the postgame clubhouse was the home run that wasn’t.

Angels could be on cusp of a great rivalry with Astros

A rival evaluator who has seen the Los Angeles Angels recently raved about them in conversation here this weekend. "They've got the best defense in baseball," he said, and that was just the appetizer of what was a seven-course assessment.

The Cincinnati Reds have fired manager Bryan Price after the team toiled through a 3-15 start in his fifth season with the club.

The Reds said in a statement Thursday morning that pitching coach Mack Jenkins has also been fired. Bench coach Jim Riggleman was named Cincinnati's interim manager. The statement said the Reds will conduct a search for a permanent manager "later in the year.

Losing Corey Seager leaves Dodgers' season on the brink

With one of the richest, deepest, most efficient organizations in baseball, the Los Angeles Dodgers appeared to be impervious to the yin and yang of baseball cycles. Yet in the wake of Corey Seager’s season-ending arm injury, this team has all the earmarks of a club that might go off the rails.

Gives new meaning to The Diamond.

And I thought the Dodgers were having troubles, geesh.
I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

Not surprised. I predicted weeks ago the the main break was a harbinger of the season to come.

They will need to move Seager to another position. I'd put him at first and Bellinger in center. Bellinger would be a gold glove center fielder.

Mariners' Ichiro Suzuki to enter front-office role for rest of '18 season

Roughly three hours before first pitch Thursday night, Ichiro Suzuki jogged to join the Seattle Mariners in the outfield, fully in uniform, black mitt in hand, prepping for another pregame routine of catching fly balls and hitting in the cage.
