Trainer Ron Burke had already re-written the record books in Harness Racing and now he stands atop the leaderboard across all breeds in single-season earnings. On Friday (12/12) he surpassed the $28,116,097 mark set by Thoroughbred trainer Todd Pletcher in 2007.

I'll be honest, I didn't know there was that much money in harness racing. But I guess if you have 5,000 starts in a year and you've won 20% of those, that's a good bit of change.
There isn't, I don't think; at least relatively speaking. I saw a number somewhere of $420 million in purses in the US for Standardbreds in 2013, compared to $1.2 billion for Thoroughbreds in both the US and Canada (so obviously you can't make a perfect comparison, but you get the idea). However, Standardbreds typically race every week, and Burke has 200+ horses in training with divisions all over the country. He has multiple entries, usually, in the biggest races. So much so that Jeff Gural, owner of the Meadowlands, Vernon, and Tioga, has instituted a trainer entry rule. You may be interested in the piece titled "Burke won't try to skirt new rules at the Meadowlands" on page three:

"Late" and "early" closers are comparable to stakes/overnights for Thoroughbreds, to the best of my knowledge.

Awkward.

"The Meadowlands is alleging that tests on Breeders Crown winner Traceur Hanover and stablemate Voelz Hanover contained five times the threshold level for cobalt typically found in a horse's system. Cobalt is considered a performance-enhancer. Both horses are trained by Corey Johnson."

"Awkward." "Disgraceful," if true. At least they're testing for cobalt. :x
I ran marathons. I saw the Taj Mahal by Moonlight. I drove Highway 1 in a convertible. I petted Zenyatta.

Big night for Brett Miller at Big M

Making a name yourself in The Meadowlands driving colony is no easy task. But Brett Miller has been making it look easy.

Miller would spot-drive at The Meadowlands in 2014 when some of the top drivers were out of town and Miller did quite well. Making the move to drive at The Big M on a regular basis has proven to be a great one as coming into Friday night (Feb. 13), Miller sat fourth in the driver standings, behind just Yannick Gingras, Dave Miller and Tim Tetrick. He gained on all three of those rivals with four winners on the Friday program, including a pair of upsets in the two featured events.

Not bad for a couple of days work.

After dominating the Tuesday card with seven wins, Corey Callahan did one better on Wednesday (Feb. 18), making it 15 wins in two nights at Dover Downs.

Harness: Hall of Famer Ron Pierce now aiming for a June return

Hall of Fame driver Ron Pierce was supposed to be back in the sulky by now. Some six weeks ago it was announced he would miss approximately five weeks of action due to neck and back surgery, but neither operation has been performed.

Mr. Hot Stuff faces a tough field in the G1 Iroquois Steeplechase this coming Saturday...only five horses in the race, but that includes the 2012, 2013 and 2014 Eclipse Champion Steeplechase horses. I love the gorgeous black full to Colonel John, but he really has to step up to win this one.

That was one for the ages. At 3 miles it's the longest hurdle race on the NSA calendar, but Mr. Hot Stuff battled every step down the stretch.

And what I love about steeplechasing. How many divisions can get their Eclipse champions from the past three years together in one race?

I have tried to find a link to a video of the race, but no luck yet. Usually Bloodhorse posts replay videos of stakes races, and I thought for sure they'd have it...after all, they carried that article...but nada. :(

Pocono to celebrate 50th anniversary

On July 15, 1965, the $7 million Pocono Downs opened its doors in Northeast Pennsylvania. Thousands of fans were on hand as Satin Queen was the first to cross the finish line on that sultry summer night.

Fifty years later, 42 tracks have come and gone, but Pocono Downs, now renamed The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono, continues to host world-record racing from March to November each year. From August 15-22, the track will honor the past and look ahead to the future with a week of events for the fans to celebrate and honor the rich history and tremendous racing.

Freaky Feet Pete upsets Wiggle It Jiggleit in Indiana Sires Stakes Final

The apron was packed, the winners’ circle was standing room only and there were many tears of joy as Freaky Feet Pete entered the winners’ circle at Hoosier Park on Saturday (October 10) after capturing an emotional edition of the $220,000 Indiana Sires Stakes Super Final for 3-year-old colt and gelding pacers over the sport’s top ranked horse in Wiggle It Jiggleit. It was as ‘Pete’ heard the roar of the crowd, as he certainly received overwhelming support from nearly all present at the Anderson oval, as he paced strongly through the lane to best his rival in 1:50.1. Vague Traces rounded out the trifecta.
