It's almost sad to see him that obese in the late 80s. I wish they would've exercised him.

This is my personal opinion, but Claiborne Farm really needs to reconsider how they keep their stallions. Secretariat had about 1 acre of paddock space, that's all the exercise he got. How in the world could he even get beyond a mild gallop? He probably was never able to get more then a good gallop in for the 15 years he lived at Claiborne. The poor guy could only dream about the great running he was able to do in the past.

He is simply the BEST. I love when people criticize his conformation pictures. They are trying to pick on the best race horse ever bred.

There is nothing to pick on, conformation wise.
That being said, it's all too obvious where Ap Indy got his heaviness from later on in life, and he's passed that on as well.

Not just AP Indy, look at Gone West & Storm Cat. They all 3 have the same body type, at least in my eyes but I'm not a specialist or anything.

No, you're right. I just picked Indy 'cause he seems to get picked on the most about his chunkiness!

Now, when it comes to both AP Indy & Gone West, they either have plenty of room to exercise and/or they have large paddocks.

Mill Ridge has extra large paddocks, and each stallion has his own little stallion barn attached to his paddock. I really like their layout at Mill Ridge.

Lanes End has the exercise walker that is used, and I know AP Indy always goes out in the paddock with one of those muffle things on his mouth.
It's Sunday, I can't think of the right name for it, my brain is fried.

that reminds me. when i was at mill ridge recently and saw gone west and johar. the guy who brought both stallions out for me had to put on a vest when he brought out johar. the horse also had a muzzle on. is he that vicious? what happened to cause him to be that mean?

I'm sure I'm all washed up in my thinking but everytime I see pics of him at stud I think of AP Indy. I did have the pleasure of seeing Indy a few times and think he took after his dam side much more than Slew. What's funny is that many of Indy's kids have the same build.

He's a dangerous horse. They don't know what happened to him; he came back from shuttling one season and was like that. He doesn't shuttle anymore, and he has improved to some degree.

Mill Ridge does a great job. Love there setup there. If I had a stallion prospect, they would be one of the farms I'd love to consider. Great people.
AP Indy was always a chunk, as was his father, but he was able to be exercised. Regarding SC's weight over the last 10 years, I don't remember any time that it was a problem.

Lovebigred, I almost wish you hadn't posted the pictures! Because it's so well done, I'd love to see your conformation shot of Secretariat posted in a breeding thread, with the claim that he is your stallion and you'd like his conformation critiqued. It'd be interesting to see what people would have to say-- while I think he's well conformed, people are often biased because of his success.

I never understood why Secretariat wasn't exercised regularly as a stallion either. He was one of the very soundest of racers, never appeared to take a bad step on or off the track, so it couldn't have been a physical reason. Did something happen to him after going to stud that prevented him from being ridden?

You know having been the athlete he was, he would have loved to been ridden and galloped. I've always wondered why he was allowed to get so heavy. He was sort of like an equine Elvis in those latter years, I guess (without the drugs, of course!).
Riding them is not the norm, but the exception. I guess there are time issues and facility issues..I can tell you it takes a lot of time. There are some who just don't want to do it...Shahrastani and Fast Play come to mind.

Re: Post your SECRETARIAT Photos here !

I'll have to dig out my photos of Secretariat. They are not any good, but at least I have something. I visited him my one and only time in October of 1988 (might have been September) and I was so excited about seeing him. He was already being shown to other visitors, but his handler waved us over. I was in awe the whole time, but remembered to take a few pictures. My sister was with me and she was bored stiff (as noted in one of the photos I took LOL), but she took one picture of me with Secretariat. I was practically hugging his neck and he didn't care. To me it was like meeting a movie star or the President. What a thrill of a lifetime. Sigh. PS I used to carry that photo of me and him in my wallet. :-)
