Gulfstream to run Quarter Horse race

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Gulfstream Park has been granted legislative approval to exercise a dormant nonprofit Quarter Horse license and as a result will run one Quarter Horse race prior to its regularly scheduled Thoroughbred program on Saturday, Dec. 31.

Ritvo said the long-range purpose of activating the Quarter Horse permit was that it could ultimately lead to Gulfstream being able to double its current allotment of 2,000 slot machines as well as add a second card room at the facility.

A bemused @dgrening: Gulfstream to host quarter-horse race on 12/31 but racing sec says ``We have no plans as to where we’ll get the horses for this race.'' OK.

Dude, Hialeah is RUNNING RIGHT NOW. If the purse is good and the conditions are in demand, the horses will come over. Assuming the race is advertised to the trainers...

I believe Hialeah runs on the 31st.....so where are the riders going to come from for the Gulfstream QH race?

Not from the Florida Quarter Horse Racing Association, according to the article Patrick linked. Apparently this all has to do with exercising a "dormant" permit that GP otherwise might lose. And that's important because . . .

Under one interpretation of Florida laws, holding one Quarter Horse race in two consecutive years can make a pari-mutuel in Broward County (Gulfstream’s locale) or Miami-Dade County eligible for a second casino. Each of those casinos can have as many as 2,000 Las Vegas-style slot machines.

    Mostly money, honey.

FL HPBA claims two issues: 1) they say their contract with the track permits only TB racing through the end of 2012 (& they don't want to be pushed around by Stronach); 2) they're afraid if QH racing gets its foot in the door at GP that will lead to money going to more QH racing (and maybe other types of racing) that should go to them.

Frankie must see Hialeah as a threat. As is his habit, he will do anything to hurt his competition. He doesn't care if it hurts the game or the fans.
