Thread: 2012 Older Males

    Re: 2012 Older Males

    From brisnet.com

Grade 2 winner Santiva (Giant's Causeway), who returned from a six-month layoff recently with a sharp second-place finish on Gulfstream Park's turf, had been nominated for both the Grade 3 Hal's Hope on the main track and the Grade 3 Fort Lauderdale on turf, both scheduled for Saturday at that venue. Trainer Brendan Walsh, though, opted to keep the four-year-old on turf for at least one more start, having determined that the 1 1/16 miles of the Fort Lauderdale suits him better than the one-turn mile distance of the Hal's Hope. "We're going to go to the Fort Lauderdale, mostly because we want to keep him around two turns," Walsh said. "I don't think the one-turn mile would suit him, but we haven't thrown him off the dirt, by no means. He's probably got a lot of potential to improve. He's still lightly raced." The goal for Santiva is either the Grade 1 Donn Handicap or the Grade 1 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap, both scheduled for February 11. "He ran very well the first time on grass. We'll give him another go on the grass and then hopefully after that we'll run him in the Donn or the Gulfstream Park Turf," Walsh said. "We were delighted with him the last time. He's going to improve a lot off his first run, I think. He was coming off a six-month layoff. I think he's going to improve a lot." Walsh took over Santiva's training from Eddie Kenneally, for whom he had worked several years as an assistant, prior to his recent Gulfstream Park start. "You'd like to think Santiva would be a Donn horse or the other race on turf. Two runs on the turf would be a good preparation for the Donn, as well as the (Gulfstream Park) Turf."

Grade 2-winning millionaire Bold Chieftain (Chief Seattle) will conclude his career in Monday's 3RD race at Golden Gate Fields, according to Daily Racing Form, and the nine-year-old will enter stud at Victory Rose Farm near Vacaville, California. A near-miss second by a neck in the Grade 3 All American on November 25, Bold Chieftain will meet All American third Dunmore East (Honour and Glory), Grade 3 British Columbia Derby winner Northern Causeway (Giant's Causeway) and the up-and-coming Soldiers Point (Dehere), who makes his two-turn bow in the 1 1/16-mile allowance on Tapeta. While Monday's contest marks Bold Chieftain's career finale, the old warrior will make one last appearance at Golden Gate on January 22, by parading before the grandstand. The track has also scheduled a poster giveaway in his honor on that date.

I've always liked this guy and can't wait to go see him at the farm, but will wait until after the breeding season when he's hopefully filled out some.

    Ugh!! Damn it!!

I was praying he'd won that photo ... I knew it was close as Hell ... Bold Chieftain had it until that last stride when the 1 horse crept ahead ... Must've been by an inch or two. Bummer.

This grand old warrior going out with a scintillating win like that would have been a perfect ending.

Hopefully he stays retired now and best, best, best of luck to him at stud! Can't wait to see his babies hopefully excel .
