Major neglect case in Louisiana....list of broodmares posted

The Louisiana Horse Rescue and RememberMe rescue are onsite at a farm in Many, La right now and there has been horrific neglect. They have just posted a list of the broodmares that were in this breeder's possession at some point and are trying to identify the living ones. What is wrong with people?

If you go to either one's facebook pages, there are pics of some badly starved horses and the list of the mares that may be involved. There is around 60 horses that have been seized.

Here is the list of the mares that LHRA just posted. They aren't certain they were all at the farm, but were known to be owned by these people at one point. Apparently, there are dead horses and at least one, Geaux Charlie (gelding) has had to be euthanized.

Here's a list of mares reportedly in the posession of the breeder in Many, Louisiana. Tomorrow we'll find out which are still alive.....I once felt sorry for 'Auto Be A Pro' at a sale and raised my hand to buy her out of pity. The auctioneer had someone else in mind for the horse and overlooked my hand to point at another bidder and pounded his hammer down....I always wondered where she went. This... list was compiled from sales records and may be outdated, but is my closest estimation of which mares are on that farm...the humane society reported today that amre who's halter they could see the word 'cat' on had died. It was either Bunny Cat, or Claudcat from below...

OMG this is terrible. I don't understand this mindset at all. I guess most of us wouldn't. If you can't care for them give them away. Heck, shoot them. Don't let them starve to death.

It's my understanding they were pulling ~60 living from that farm, and knew there were several dead horses on the property.

Is that about what you know, stuff?

Most of those mares were registered to Charles Ford as La breds in 2010. Nobody has officially announced who is responsible for this horror, but if it is him, he deserves to be named and shamed. The pictures are horrific. They reported one pasture had 20 horses in it with only six still living. I want to know why it went on this long before the rescues were allowed to come in.

One of the survivors. Many are being treated for impactions -- because they were eating tree bark.

Is this a boarding farm? There is one mare on that list that I was familiar with and I looked her up. She had a 2011 foal in May of last year and her foals were bred consistently by another person other than Mr Ford which may indicate that it is a farm taking in outside boarders.

No names have been given yet. I just see that the majority of mares from that list are registered to Mr Ford or in partnership with Mr Ford and he is from that area. I'm sure that it will all come out in the coming days as there is likely to be charges laid. From what I have read there were dead dogs and other animals laying around too. It breaks my heart.

Jesus God. Those poor, poor, poor mares. Are some of them bred?

This is what can happen when people think slots = easy money. I am not blaming slots, because a lot of people had to know this was going on (where the HELL was Animal Control letting it deteriorate to this point.) But people see 'breed horses = bonus money derived from LOTS AND LOTS of gambling revenue', and you can get people who let this happen.

Now identified as Claudcat. I'm not copying photos of the dead mares here, but she looks like a skeleton covered in horsehair. She was 8, made 3 starts on the track, never won. FWIW, PQ.com only lists one foal for her, a 2009 model, Cajun Gal by Omega Code.

She was purchased at auction by Charles Ford for $300. He should never be allowed to own even a goldfish again...I'm so sad about this.

Heartbreaking update from Louisiana Horse Rescue Association @ ~10:30 pm EST (https://www.facebook.com/LHRA1):

To those offering fostering/transport etc, Thank You but at the moment we need to quarantine anything we remove from the property. After a couple of weeks when the horses are stabilized and we know the full effect of what we're dealing with we'll be looking for adoptive and possibly foster homes. I want to send a personal Thank You to Dr. Mirza and the LSU Vet school for their much needed and incredible help today. Without them, we couldn't have been effective. A larger vet team from LSU will be onsite tomorrow - we are so grateful for this assistance. Today we did a lot of firefighting and stablizing. Tomorrow we hope to further identify (many of the mares we need to look up tatoo numbers on so don't have final identifications yet). Of the 53 mares on the list, there are only twenty and change alive right now. Of the 20 2011 foals born, only 6 remain, and three of those are at risk. The 2011 foal crop seems fairly stable and in better health than anything else on the farm. We removed only five horses from the farm today - five healthy enough to go and with valid paperwork.

This is horrifying. I'm amazed a horse in such depleted condition could still stand. How could anyone allow animals to suffer like this?

I think we can all agree- this is rescue.

Absent facts, I have to think there is a root mental illness or physical sickness involved but didn't anyone else in the community have any idea what was going on before it got to this point?

    Tragic.

There were complaints, and the Humane Society got involved in November. At first they tried to help him, then they tried to get him to give them up, and finally they had to convince the sheriff and a judge to allow a seizure.

I don't know this for a fact, but I suspect, as seems to happen often in these cases, they didn't know the full extent of the problem (i.e., how many horses and other animals were there) until they got onto the property.

Edited to add: The Humane Society also couldn't act to seize until it had help lined up to process and vet the horses and, most importantly, places for them to go.

Re: Major neglect case in Louisiana....list of broodmares posted

Update just posted by Remember Me Rescue:

Here is an update on numbers:
Of 53 broodmares only 20 were alive.
Of 2011 foal crop only 6 were alive and 3 are in critical condition.
5 were removed from the property yesterday that were in any shape to be moved and with proper paperwork.*
There are many 2 and 3 year olds not sure on their numbers yet.

*I believe 4 of these are already at a farm in Mississippi, and are eating steadily.

Edited to add: his dogs were found dead in an outdoor kennel, starved to death.

Edited again to add: 2 of the mares on the list have Three Chimneys connections. If they are among the living, TC will help with them.

Re: Major neglect case in Louisiana....list of broodmares posted

The Humane society does NOT act if "certain conditions are met" regardless of how a horse looks! They could have been out there 10 times but if they saw a bale of hay they would have said the horses have food... the fault lies with the agency that oversees the humane societies who mandate what constitutes abuse. What WE think is abuse the states do not.
