    Hi Cesario,

I think Genten has a lot of potential to develop into a top horse in time. We know of his sire Bernardini's performance in the Belmont but few recall that his dam Miss Terrible won at 1 1/4 on the turf in Argentina. I think many U.S horsemen are reluctant to ship their younger horses to Dubai because they believe there is an extended period of recovery for their horses after such a long trip and quarantine trip that it would knock the horses out for at least the rest of the season. Perhaps this is not a concern internationally where they have more opportunities for older horses. I know very little about international racing and would certainly like to learn more. I appreciate your interest in sharing your input.

Is Ritto where Genten is normally trained, or where he might have gone when he first came into Japan last year.
--> Ritto is where Genten is normally trained.

I'm curious about the distance, times and transport modes. Is Kansai airport near the Ritto training center.
    --> About 100 miles

How long of a flight is it to Dubai? Do the horses fly non stop or are there layovers or stops for fuel along the way?
--> That should depend on the flights. I don't know which flight Genten will take. It may take about 12 hours if he can take a non-stop flight. Emirates has a direct flight between Dubai and Kansai Airport. But I am not sure that it will be available to Japanese horses. Last year, Buena Vista, Vitoire Pisa and Transcend went to Dubai via Hong Kong with a connecting flight. Total flight time for them was said to be about 17 hours.

Once they arrive in Dubai, how far do the horses need to travel to the quarantine center, and are they quarantined on the racetrack property or another facility?
    --> It's about 25 minutes drive.

Tachyon, I am in deep gratitude to you for all the information about Genten and in answering my incessant questions. You are quite the ambassador for Japanese horseracing. It would be wonderful some day to hear the JRA recognize your talents and efforts.

Please excuse me if I do not respond promptly. I am not too familiar with the email notification process of this forum. I get an email whenever there is a new post in the siblings thread but none in the foreign racing one.

    Thanks for the encouragement, Equine.
I am not knowledgeable enough to be an ''ambassador''.
But it's always fun for me to try to find anything about this global sport -– horseracing!
Both Japanese racing and North American racing are my spiritual home.
Now I am located in Japan.
But I always hope I will return to US racing tracks some day.

I hope you can return here someday and that we can meet and have a great day at Arlington Park which is near our home.

    That will be great.
I have never been to Arlington Park.
Maybe on Million Day a few years later??

Here's a new pick of Genten (in the quarantine stable at Ritto).

You would .really enjoy Arlington. Saratoga has that early 1930-40s idyllic summer atmosphere and Churchill Downs has the history of the Derby, but Arlington was recreated from the fire like a phoenix single handedly by Dick Ducchissois. IMHO, it is the most beautiful track in the U.S. No detail was overlooked in creating an immaculate, family friendly environment to enjoy the races.

I so appreciate you sending a pix of Genten in QT. Unfortunately, I am unable to view the pox from the forum. It just comes through as a blue box with a "?" mark inside. Could you perhaps send it to me by email?

I get confused with the dates in 3 time zones, but I am hoping that Genten is now out of QT in Dubai.

    Re: February Stakes

Yes! Genten is already in Dubai after a 20 hours trip from Kansai Airport (via Sinpapore).
(so maybe over 24 hours trip from Ritto)

I am sorry for having posted a link that does not open. (hmm, I can never be sure what type of jpg files are no good...)

Please now click the following links that should be good. (please let me know again if you can't view these picks of Genten!)

-- in the quarantine stable at Ritto (Mar 19)

-- on departure from Ritto (Mar 21)
    http://ameblo.jp/yahagi-ecurie/image...865954561.html
    http://ameblo.jp/yahagi-ecurie/image...865954564.html

Genten will be ridden by Craig Williams in Dubai <---- this must be good news.

Thank you, the links opened beautifully! Not only was I able to see the pix of Genten, I found a free translator for the Android cell phone called "Web Translator Lite" on the Google Market so I can now get some semblance of the translation. Genten looks pretty composed and seems to have a genuine affection for his caretaker Ando. Miss Terrible was much the same
with "her family." I ask amazed to think Japanese horses run well after such a grueling flight. That flight would make me want to rest for 2 weeks. I would hope Genten would try to get as much test as possible in the Dubai QT barn, but I know it can be very busy with veterinarians wanting to insure the horses are healthy, and grooms watching their horses closely for any signs of dehydration, off feed or transport stress. The Graham Motion U.S 3 yr in the same race is training well and had a really nice work the other day: 6f in 1::12.

I never dreamed Genten would be racing on DWC day and I would really, really like to see his race live.

Do you know if the pix was on the main Tapeta track at Meydan or a training track? I.m hoping out is the main track as Genten appears to be traveling well over it. He looks really alert and like Ando has been taking berry care of him. Do you know when he arrived at the stable and if he just walked or went to the track after the 2 day quarantine.

I was a little confused by the titles on the last pix in Japan with the words Origin and another name. Is that how Genten is referred to in the stable, or can you possibly explain it to me?

Up until a month ago, no one but his connections would have dreamed Genten would go to Dubai.

''Genten'' is a Japanese word. In ''kanji'', it's 原点
It means [origin, root, starting (original) point, basics, fundamental perspective, orginal intention etc.] in Japanese, depending on the context.
Well, I will never be a good Japanese teacher.
But the word ''Genten'' can be used like this...
''While I enjoy following global racings now, Japanese racing is my Genten.''

Wasn't the other word you found in the above links through your tranlator ''Makani Bisty''? He is Genten's stablemate who will contend in the Dubai Gold Cup.
(The pics you saw in the above links are definitely Genten's, by the way. There were other links for picks of Makani Bisty, but I didn't post them.)

That's a very good explanation! I thought the Web Translator Lite app for mobil was pretty good until I tried to read the posts on Yahagi's blog. It is very helpful to know the dialect is Kanji.

I am unfamiliar with the jockey Craig Williams and am wondering if he will be up on Genten at any time in the mornings to become familiar with him? Miss Terrible always went best with jockeys with very light hands like Alex Solis and Mike Smith.

I have not seen any mention in the U.S. of the races being broadcast live. Will you be able to watch them.live in Japan?

    Re: February Stakes

Genten – Two horses from Yoshito Yahagi’s stable, Makani Bisty for the G3 US $1 million Dubai Gold Cup, sponsored by Al Tayer Motors, and Genten, running for the G2 US$2 million UAE Derby, sponsored by The Saeed & Mohammed Al Naboodah Group, did a routine work on the all-weather track.

The trainer Yoshito Yahagi, who flew into Dubai Monday morning and saw his horses working, commented, “I felt very relieved to see their good conditions. I think it is hard for horses to keep the best condition when they travel abroad, but they handled the long flight well and have not lost any weight. They are maintaining the same good form at home.”

What very good news from the trainer! I have been looking around the sites for news of Genten and have seen nothing except the pics you posted. UMA must be at Meydan as she kindly several videos of the Japanese horses, including Genten on the racetrack.

Forgot to mention, UMA's videos are in the original
    "Dubai" thread.

Genten just had a light work today. Craig Williams was up (maybe for the first time).
Williams commented, ''Genten is very relaxed and good''

Craig Williams at Meydan this morning.

    Hi Equine,
    Genten finished last, unfortunately.
His stablemate Makani Bisty finished last, too, in the Dubai Gold Cup.
That was sad, but I would think that that's the racing.
He may not have liked traveling overseas.
Now I hope that he will come back to his home at Ritto safely.
    He is still very young.

Thank you so much for sharing your precious information about his dam Miss Terrible.
I left America in 2004 and didn't see her in person.
But your posts certainly made me a huge fan of Miss Terrible.
I hope I can keep you posted about Genten, too.

Thank you Tachyon for keeping track of Genten. It is so very hard to do from here when a horse is not a big star. You are correct in that Genten is still very young. It was certainly an honor to be invited to Dubai and though I was hoping for the impossible, I knew the reality was there were to many obstacles to overcome for any horse: going from 8f to 9 1/2, stepping way, way up in class, a late ship date, quarantine at both ends, a tremendously long flight , unfamiliar surroundings, going from a cold/cool climate to hot, a jockey who had only ridden him once, and a Tapeta surface which is unusually deep and tiring as demonstrated by the fractional times.

Genten has demonstrated the versatility of his dam to handle both dirt and turf. His trainer posted he trained well on the Tapeta at Northern Farm but Tapeta tracks are not identical (nor is any synthetic) in composition and perform differently in relative to local temperatures. IMHO, I think they are much more suited to cooler, wetter climates.

Makani Bisuti was running so well, it must have been heartbreaking to have the race halted and have to run again and tire. My hope now is both horses come home safe and sound.

Would you mind watching a replay of the UAE Derby on youtube at about the 17-18 second mark and send me your comments in a private message?
