Haskin’s Derby Trail: Who is the Real News Pending?

Am I missing something with this horse? He just was destroyed in a race which was not run very fast, and he gets an article as if he is a serious derby horse? This horse is an allowance horse at best who finished second in a grade 2 that was full of distance challenged and slow horses, other than the winner. He currently has 1 win in 7 starts and that was in a grass race. Now I guess I could see an article on a horse like EXOTHERMIC, who has beaten NP, and maybe could do something if he tries the dirt, but News Pending? Is Haskin serious?

Have you ever worked as a writer who has a quota of articles to produce? Haskin has to write about something. This horse interested him. It's a blog, he's allowed.

I read Haskin all the time, and he has commented so little on the West Coast horses, you know some of the ones with real shots at winning real races. News Pending is ridiculously average. There are horses on the West Coast that work faster than he runs races. Heck, he isn't even the top 3yr old in his barn. Dullahan is much more talented.NP It is almost like Haksin is writing for the owners who are praying some sucker will come along and purchase him privately.

Go post some suggestions on his blog comments section. He's got Creative Cause as his #3.

I am talking about his blog. Look at the entries. It is almost like he thinks all racing in America happens on the East Coast. If he wants to just be an east coast writer than the BH should actually get somebody who writes about West Coast horses. Does Haskell (lol) even follow Baffert horses?

Here is an article authored by him about two Baffert horses.

Here is his most recent Derby Dozen, where half of them are West Coast horses:

    He mentions four Baffert horses.

News Pending, first of all, has a clever name. Then there's the Dale Romans factor -- he's good at springing the surprise. People have criticized me for being intrigued by the West Coaster Empire Way, who may have picked up 2nd thanks all the trouble in the middle of the track of the Robbie Lewis. But if I keep listening to just the rationale side of me and don't allow for possible surprises then well what sort of fun is that?

Empire Way is very interesting. News Pending is not. He has proven he is not even in the league with a horse like Union Rags who destroyed him for fun off the layoff. NP is essentially an allowance horse based on his figures.

Empire Way is interesting? The horse they keep throwing into company he doesn't really seem to belong in and hopes he's sticks because it's best to strike while the iron is hot? The tri in his last race paid that much for a reason.

Hindsight is always 20-20, but News Pending getting second in the FOY really isn't that much of a surprise when you look at his PPs.

NP getting second had to do with the rest of the field. Empire Way just ran a very solid race off the layoff and his pedigree suggests derby. Neither horse is going to beat the top caliber 3yr olds, but Empire Way is a heck of a lot more interesting due to his pedigree than NP.

Are you using the trifecta from a race where the longest shot on the board won to validate the case that the second place horse who ran at 6-1 didn't belong in the race?

Not 100%, anyway. I thought he went off higher than 6-1 so I was wrong. His other stakes attempts were pitiful, but maybe he appreciated dirt more than Hollywood. Racing makes me a fool so I could be wrong. Wouldn't be the first nor last time.
