Would be interested to know at what levels are the breakdowns happening. Is this a case of bottom level horses being 'pushed' too much while chasing the inflated purses?
Never mind . . .

Number one, who is Jerry Bossert. Number two, numbers like that assume that the same number of races and the same number of starts were made each year, which is likely not true.
From the NYPost on Saturday
The winter meet at Aqueduct is not quite 13 weeks old, and there have been 11 fatalities over the inner dirt track: 10 by breakdown, one by cardiovascular collapse. The latest came in Friday’s second race when Bernie’s Love, making his fourth start for Nick Zito, fractured his right knee while racing around the far turn and had to be euthanized. Tough loss: The 4-year-old Bernardini colt was a home-bred half-brother to the top-class racemare Happy Ticket.

Two breakdowns in the last two days.and about three or four had to be pulled up. i've been watching races from Aqueduct since 1974 and i never seen so many horses been either pulled up or breakdown as in the last 3-4 yrs. where is the track vet?
They should open the main track earlier than planned in this relatively light winter IMO.
Apparently every aspect of NYracing, including the coloring of manes and tails, is highly regulated to the point where even suggesting the idea that change is possible is deeply frowned upon.
Just read a comment on DRF about the tighter turns of the Inner Track causing increased frequency of certain injuries, and have a question: If that is so, shouldn't the turf track (to the inside of the inner track) then be even worse?
I just want to see them do something to fix the problem because it seems like the number of fatalities is getting higher every year..

I'd just like to note for the record that AQU never lists vet scratches on the Changes/Scratches sheet for EQB. Or at least hasn't during this meet.

This article states that the majority of the fatalities occurred in lower level claiming races. 4 in 7.5k races and 3 in state bred maiden claimers, 4 more in special weights including the zito trained son of bernardini and a 50k claimer.
I wonder how this ratio compares to the ratio of races run at aqueduct.
