I was NOT a Smarty fan. Not really sure why, I just did not want him winning the TC. I was bummed when he won the Derby, even more so when he won the Belmont. In retrospect I wish I had enjoyed the whole thing more because, hey, what a blast and what a cool little horse - he would've bee fun to root for.
However, had he won the TC, with his issues - was it bad ankles that sent him to retirement - I would've been so upset to see him gone so early afterward.
I was watching this with family and everyone was cheering for Smarty, and then Birdstone just pounced on his lead and pulled ahead, and I started shouting up a storm. It wasn't until I watched it years later that I heard the heartbreak in Durkin's voice or the way the crowd fell out.
Didn't people boo poor Birdstone on the way back? Bad form, guys. Bad form.
And listening to some big out a' town jasper, hearing him tell about horse-race gamblin'.
Not a wholesome trottin' race, no, but a race where they sit down right on a horse!
Like to see some stuck-up jockey boy sittin' on Dan Patch?
Make your blood boil? Well, I should say!
I was 9. I loved Smarty Jones to death. I didn't cry at this race, but I remember being pretty bummed out.
i was not a smarty jones fan but i wanted him to win the tc at the end. i got very mad when he lost! i thought he deserved it. and that's coming from a horseplayer that the only time i bet on him was that day but i did it with my heart not my head! i don't even want to watch the replay.

9 years later and this still depresses the hell out of me. I was an angry little 14 year old at school that following Monday.
