HBO's "Luck" suspends filming w/ horses after 3rd horse dies

The animal was being led to a Santa Anita Park racetrack stable by a groom when it reared and fell back Tuesday morning, suffering a head injury, according to HBO. The horse was euthanized at the track in suburban Arcadia, where "Luck" is filming its second season.

HBO has agreed, under pressure from the AHA, to suspend filming using horses while the incident is investigated.

When you're working with live animals, unfortunately, sh!t's gonna happen.

Easily could've happened to Unrivaled Belle. Or any horse. Sad.

    Poor fella, RIP.

Suspending filming will certainly get their budgetary attention.

Actually, she was a filly or mare.

It wasn't a breakdown, just your regular horse accident. But I guess they have to appease the watchdogs.

Not a good headline for racing or the show on a heavily-trafficked sports site:

Because of the previous 2 breakdowns, I imagine.

Nor a good photo to accompany the article, either.

Yeah, I understand it, but anti-Luckites will spin it. If it was another breakdown, sure, criticize, but horses freak out and kill themselves all the time. Non-horse PETA-types could run with this and look like complete idiots doing it, but still get negative publicity for the show.

Hard to say, as yes, they can flip anytime and kill themselves, but implication here could be that the handlers might not be the best horsemen. Which I would guess to be the case, truthfully, because the best groom, hotwalkers, etc. are working for real trainers that make a living, not for a guy that plays trainer for Luck stable. And all shows look for ways to cut corners, even with big budgets. Which doesn't mean this might not have happened anyway. They should hire D. Wayne. He must have some time free these days. He can show them how to lead horses with two peeps.

And of course, I'm sure this poor, unfortunate pony will remain anonymous ... Which I think is bullsh!t ...

Could very well be a horse I love and I'll never truly know where she went.

These horses matter to some of us and we'd like to say our goodbyes. Yet this poor pony will remain nameless I'm sure ...

seabiscuit, secretariat, warhorse, the goofy series wildfire, they all managed to get filmed without horses dying as i recall. "accidents happen" but this seems pretty ridiculous.

I'm writing PETA. HBO is disgraceful. You can't film a Series about Horse Racing and not kill 3 horses?

Re: HBO's "Luck" suspends filming w/ horses after 3rd horse dies

I hate to sound unsympathetic here, because I really do feel bad for these animals, but I am seeing a questionable double standard here. How many of these horses die every year due to this type of thing in the course of normal racing business? I have news for you: horse racing is a sport and form of gambling, and is every bit as much for entertainment purposes (if not moreso) as shooting a TV series. If it is not okay for a horse to die because of a freak accident or racing accident while filming a show for entertainment, surely it is not okay for a horse to die training or racing for gamblers to get a thrill. We ignore this kind of stuff on a daily basis. I guess I don't get what's so different about this, and why we are all coming out of the woodwork and acting so self-righteous.

    Am I missing something?

Yeah there is a difference. In My Opinion.

When they run in a race they are doing what they were bred for but when a Director and HBO says we need multiple takes to film a scene that exhausts horses that break down and 3 die in less than a year, yeah you have a problem.

I'm all for entertainment but if horses are going to die for a HBO Drama No Thank You. I appreciate and love the sport and if the horse breaks down there OK.

hadnt heard that. didnt watch the film (not surprised to hear it was as terrible as it looked), but when movies like seabiscuit that had what, 9 horses playing the title role? and a war admiral or 2, and his stable mate, and a few used in racing scenes... and they go accident free, i always wonder how stuff like this still happens. accidents happen, i know. its still hard to digest anyway.

Re: HBO's "Luck" suspends filming w/ horses after 3rd horse dies

Perhaps it's the track. Or bad "luck", heh. Or it just looks worse than it is--(pay attention to facts, AGS)--one horse died while filming the pilot, which was what, a year, almost a year, before filming the next season, when the next horse died? And then this completely unrelated to racing accident. As good a record as most top barns IMO...
