    Re: Grand National

To be honest, I wouldn't reccomend watching it. There will be a lot of fallers and there are bound to be dead horses with the amount of injuries that are caused in that race. Besides, the favourite almost never wins. Last year it was pretty gruelling to watch as it was a very hot day and a lot of horses (including the winner) cam back de-hydrated and it just broke my heart especially that all the racing media cared about was the fact that the winning trainer was Donald McCain. If you want to watch it, that's fine. I have nothing against the race. I'm just warning you that some sights might be unpleasant so just be careful when choosing to watch the race and be prepared for some bad scenarios.

Are you joking? All the media after the race was about the deaths of Dooney's Gate and Ornais and how the Grand National is cruel to horses and what not. The winner of the race was an afterthought.

Horses don't die every year. It's not a regular occurrence. There are some injuries and some fallers and a lot of horses who probably should not be racing in that race but the horses are usually all fine. They also changed aspects of the course after the backlash from last year to make the jumps safer.

I love watching the Grand National. It's exciting and the courage and heart these racers show is amazing.

I said the 'RACING MEDIA' not 'THE MEDIA'. And the fact that the course was slightly changed doesn't change anything. It will still injure a lot horses and likely kill one or two.

Vaguely related, I finally learned what "to pull a Devon Loch" means. I feel accomplished in my obscure United Kingdom slang now.

    Re: Grand National

I would highly recommend reading this piece which was written by jockey Patrick Mullins who was riding the ill fated Dooneys Gate in last years Grand National, it gives the event from his point of view. http://www.racingpost.com/news/horse...013368/latest/

Here is an extract of it:

I'm standing up, talking to someone, about something. There's a field of horses galloping in the distance. I turn around to pick up my stick. There's a dark horse on the ground, head facing the fence, away from me. Don't be my horse. Please.

I run around and there's the white splotch on the forehead. It's Dooneys. He looks okay, not in distress. I look at his legs. Nothing broken. Good, good, bloody great actually! He's only winded. I go and undo the girth. Suddenly we're surrounded by green. There's people running in around Dooneys.

"Sure he's only winded," I tell them. "Not so sure, son," says the vet "Look at his tail." It's loose and floppy. Someone pours a bucket of water over Dooneys. He lifts his head and moves his front legs. But his back legs don't move.

Sadly lost Gold Cup winner Synchronised and According To Pete

Very exciting finish, it was hard to call! & well done to Katie Walsh who is the highest placed women to ever finish the National with 3rd on Seabass.

That was a nose! And the funny thing is, in that final stride, it was the only time time that Neptune Collonges was in front! Sadly Synchronised landed badly at Becher's Brook and According to Pete was brought down by a faller at another fence and unfortunately it was fatal

The fatality rate at Aintree and for that matter Fairiehouse and the other National Hunt havens is inexcusable. The approach seems to be to run them until they die. While it no doubt solves the problem of what to do with ex-racers, it seems hardly civilized. Let me correct that term - it seems barbaric.

And now I will leave this nauseating subject and leave you all to drool happily over the thrills of yet another fabulous and thrilling Grand National. "Sadly Synchronised landed badly..."?? That's called crocodile's tears.

    Over and out.

Well then racing at Aqueduct should definately banned! Alongside racing horses on drugs and steriods.....I'm proud to say we don't do that in the UK!

This is one of those subjects that could go on forever...

So you're saying 'you have no heart and don't give a c*** about these horses!'?
well all I can say is that I care about the horses more than anything else and I'm also against the race being run ever again but that doesn't take away the fact that it was a brilliant race and was very exciting this year. And what the heck do you mean by "That's called crocodile's tears."?!

Seriously, I feel really sorry for the horses and the connections and I'm devastated by it. The fact that I used 'Sadly' apparently in your mind demonstrates the opposite. Yes this race should never be ran ever again and yes the death rates are high but notice they are not as high as in America where they race mostly on dirt. Does that suggest ban all dirt races? No. And again I'm not saying this race is okay but it is not a total disaster where half of the field dies which by the way you formed your post seems to come through as reality.

    Re: Grand National

A lot of bunkum from those who don't understand racing on here sadly.

Doping horses to the eyeballs and running them on dodgy tendons/bones causes far far far more fatal injuries than the National ever will.

I agree...I'm more concerned why horses spontaneously break down on the flat than why a horse who has suffered a fatal injury after falling at a fence and has to be euthanased as a result. Yes both sorts of racing puts the horses under pressure and no one ever wants to see a horse have to be put down but its pretty rare that in the UK you see horses breaking down in the flat season or maybe thats just my perspective.

I don't agree with using drugs on racehorses, we manage fine here in the UK without Lasix and I honestly can't remember the last time I saw a flat horse being pulled up because it bled...
