LOL. Yeah, a how old? mare that throws Belmont Stakes winners is going to "retire" Bode.

    Jesus.

If he retires, it will because he has won a classic, another Gr. 1, a championship, cost too much to insure/ too valuable to risk or is too unsound to train on to do any of that. Not because of one old mare. But because of 100 other younger mares that will pay his owners to breed to the young son of Japan's Empire Maker out of a Storm Cat mare.

*rolls eyes* Doesn't matter. He will retire anyway. That's the whole point.

Connections praise Bodemeister following runner-up effort

"He ran his race," trainer Bob Baffert said. "He was there and he just got tired a little bit. He's only run four times. I was really proud of him. He's a super impressive horse."

I'm still not going to root for a Triple Crown this year, but I feel better about Saturday after reading that.
I haven't been as upset about a horse race like I was on Saturday in a long time.
I love Bode more after reading that. I always did love Bob, but now a lot more than before.

Zayat Stables (well, his marketing team) put together a behind-the-scenes video -- Go Bode Go: A Derby Tale.

I'm told it's quite well done.

Thanks for posting. PM Advertising did it and they do the best job overall on a regular basis with racing and breeding industry promo vids and sites. But they clearly couldn't (or didn't) use NBC footage, and as I recall, the peacock is a particular prick about clearance.

Let's hope that he is fit and can make the Preakness. I felt that he was a better fit to win the Preakness than the Derby, and he nearly pulled that one off. He can rest until the Haskell after he wins the Preakness.

Awesome to hear!! Maybe he gets more from these races than they take out of him.

    Re: Bodemeister

I don't know if I'd prefer for him to run in the Preakness or to wait for the Belmont. I'm really rooting for I'll Have Another so, the less dangerous competition, the better. On the other hand I want to see a real good race.

In the end I guess I'll be happy whatever their decision. Bring it on!

From the press conference Tuesday at Monmouth:

The anchor of racing at Monmouth is the $1,000,000 Haskell Invitational, which this summer will be run on Sunday, July 29 th . After lunch I had the opportunity to ask Kulina which Bob Baffert horse should we expect? With a twinkle in his eye Kulina gleefully said, “BODEMEISTER! Just the other day I spoke to Bob (Baffert) and he told me Preakness, and you know we’re not running in the Belmont, and then the Haskell."

Me too. Maybe Bob won't take it this year?

True, but he got only a slightly better result than Curlin provided.

    This is an interesting suggestion...

Send Bodemeister to the Met Mile...

    Dear Bob Baffert,

Have you heard the story about the trainer and his losing favorite in the Kentucky Derby? No, we're not talking about 2001 and your colt, Point Given.

Rather, this was a speedster that dominated his final Kentucky Derby prep race three weeks before the big event. He had shown incomparable brilliance going one and one-eighth miles. The betting public responded and wagered gobs of cash on his chances.

Unfortunately, he lost and even the talents of Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith couldn't get him home first.

I love the idea of the Met Mile for Bode and have since he crossed the wire second.

Here is a scathing and generally nasty piece from Hovdey on the Bode Cult. (Although he obtusely manages to join the cult kicking and screaming along the way by giving such short shrift to the winner - apparently found it more interesting to bash Bode than celebrate "another.")

The more I think about it - I like the idea too. I do not know if Mr. Baffert wants to ship/be away from his charge so much as he would have to if he planned an East coast campaign for him - but as the article notes he could prep for the Classic in the Goodwood so his campaign would not be exclusively on the East coast. I would skip teh Dwyer after the Met Mile and go right to the Haskell. If he wins - it would give him three Grade 1 victories by early August...the victory against older horses would give him an edge over IHA in that respect though a Santa Anita Derby/Derby/Preakness trio could be tough to better.
