    Re: Preakness Probables

Looks like Went the Day Well is a good possibility for the Preakness:

"Highly likely for a Preakness bid is Team Valor International’s Went the Day Well, fourth in the Derby for trainer Graham Motion. The colt will fly to Baltimore, Md., May 7, along with Derby winner I'll Have Another.

“He seems fine, he has one pretty good cut on his right front ankle but it looks more superficial,” Motion said of the March 23 Spiral Stakes (gr. III) winner. “I think that if he seems alright this week, there’s a pretty strong possibility he’ll be in the Preakness. The beautiful thing about running in the Spiral is he’s had six weeks heading into the race; it’s not like we’ve crammed in a couple. It’ll be a little bit more laid-back this year than it was last year, that’s for sure.”

Motion trained 2011 Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom to a runner-up finish in the Preakness.

“Went the Day Well ran a huge race,” he said. “I think (with) another jump he’s second and with a good trip he has a shot to win the race. It’s frustrating but we had a beautiful trip last year, we had the trip the winner had this year, and that’s what it’s all about in this race, you’ve got to have a good trip.

"The start cost him. (Jockey) Johnny (Velazquez) wanted to be about 8-10 lengths further ahead at the start than he was. That didn’t work out. Then he got checked in the first turn. That’s where all the bad things start to happen..”

We can now add the following three as likely.

    Hansen

    Optimizer (of course)

    Liason

The Lumber Guy will be playing the role previously portrayed by Trinniberg. Leading man Bodemeister unamused.

Lol, that's one way to solve UR's traffic problems -- start him 8-10 lengths ahead of the rest of the field.

    Re: Preakness Probables

Union Rags was finishing very well once he got outside in the stretch. He deserves a look.

I think Went The Day Well is the better horse now. He seems to be the biggest threat to take down the Derby winner in leg two.

If Bodemeister comes back to race in two weeks he'll do it without a workout. I don't know how I feel about that or if I would back him.

I don't see any new shooter hitting the board.

    Re: Preakness Probables

Interesting since even after the bad start the horse right next to Union Rags as they start up the backstretch is Went The Day Well. If you isolate the two from there you can see the problem is Rags lack of turn of foot. WTDW managed to finish in the top group and came from the exact same position Rags did.

That's for sure. The Lumber Guy is probably the best of the bunch and he finished up the tarck in the wood. They're all tosses

Okay so is Hansen likely or not?!

Yup. I noticed that, too. And WTDW was two jumps from finishing 2nd.

    Re: Preakness Probables

Dr. Hansen has walked it back a bit. ;-)

From gradedstakes.com: Kendall Hansen tells us he will wait a week before deciding upon whether or not to race in the Preakness. He says trainer Mike Maker will not run the horse if it's not good for him.

    Re: Preakness Probables

Add the Canonero Stakes' 2nd place finisher, Brimstone Island, to the Preakness probables list. He's my only wager yesterday that actually paid money. Now if he'd only WON. He might have, had he had a better trip (this seems to be his habit of late), and a bit more distance. Preakness is more distance, but I really think his owner/trainer may be a bit overly ambitious entering him there.

    Re: Preakness Probables

For anyone thinking of visiting the KD winner at PIM: according to Jeannine Edwards the O'Neill crew will be stabled in Barn D, not the Stakes Barn. This is likely because he's sending 7 horses.

I am confused. You speak of UR but, in what you quoted and bolded, the subject horse was Went The Day Well.

I sure hope not. They are going to ruin that horse. He should have been scratched Thursday after he was rank during his morning work.

    Re: Preakness Probables

Man, I hope they skip the Preakness/Belmont with Hansen. Let him rest and point him towards shorter races. He would make a brilliant miler!

I posted Dr. H's latest statement a couple of posts below yours. Basically, they'll wait a week, and Maker won't do what's not good for the horse.

LOL. That owner is not ready to give up the spotlight yet. This is another horse that actually may do a little better in the Preakness if Bode was gutted by his derby effort. Completely possible.

That quote was from my post and the 8-10 lengths was meant relative to where he was positioned at the back of the field, meaning mid-pack, not in front of the entire field, but I think the comment about UR was just an extrapolation and meant as a joke.
