I'm one of his Twitter followers. He's just a pleasure to read. What a nice, decent, humble guy he is. I like to see people like this in the game. Let's just hope he remains unspoiled. I'd hate to see him turn into another Gomez, Baze or Borel.

I think a more comparable comparison would be for him to not turn into an a-hole like Martin Garcia, who is essentially dependent on Baffert. Mario would give his left nut to be another Gomez or Borel, don't know which Baze but both I'm sure he wouldn't mind.

We certainly don't need to see another Martin Garcia that's for sure! You summed him up beautifully with the term "a-hole".

I can't seeing Mario becoming that, but then again I don't remember if Garcia wasn't one at first and then became one or not.

I doubt, from what I've seen though, that Mario would take the Garcia route.

This was on the front page of the Vancouver Sun's sports section today (They've been giving him a lot of attention--and during Stanley Cup season! Giving column inches to something besides hockey?* Egad!):

*If the Canucks were still in, it's very likely he could win the Triple Crown and no one in Vancouver would notice, I swear.

Mario paid a visit to Hastings Park in Vancouver on the weekend. Check it out:

    Homesick Gutierrez almost left California

Mario Gutierrez's fairytale journey that has carried him to within one victory of the Triple Crown almost never happened. The 25-year-old native of Veracruz, Mexico, who rode regularly at Hastings Park from 2006 to 2011, was so homesick for Vancouver, British Columbia, that he nearly left California despite having just won the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby aboard I'll Have Another.

Re: Mario Gutierrez -Jockey of I'll Have Another

Mario Gutierrez strikes me as being his own person - just an all-around nice guy and a talent as a jockey, as well. Good upbringing. Nothing phoney or put on about him - a breath of fresh air, so to speak. In a brief period of time, he has commanded a good deal of respect from racing fans and his peers, as well.

Reddam sure spotted himself a winner when he suggested him to O'Neill as the pilot for I'll Have Another. Really hard not to root for Mario and his mount.

It's going to be a spectacular Belmont Stakes Day. I hope it's nice weather.

Mario is definitely a big reason i'm rooting for IHA.

Here's some more footage of his Hastings visit, a couple of weekends ago:
