Thanks for the kind comments - glad you all liked the pics. It was so cute! Probably one of my very favorite moments at the sales! She's a very very lovely mare anyway. We were setting her up so we could get a headshot with the poster in the background, there was a tree in the middle of the walking ring right in front of the barn and she kept trying to nose over to it, so we had her moved closer to the wall and this was the result.
Now if only it was August and if only the photo had been published, this would be my idea of a perfect Eclipse Award candidate.
I only wish we could somehow open up the Eclipse Awards for photography without the panel being bombarded with a lot of really really bad shots (which would happen if it was opened to the public). But what happens is that magazines are publishing less and less of the artistic, clever, unusual stuff and that really narrows the options because the Award can only go to a published photo and if all they're printing are the stock stuff, it makes it really tough to find something that is beautiful or unique or clever or just plain cute!
I wouldn't know where to start to change these rules, but I do know that most professional racing photographers DO NOT submit even one photo, much less a couple and when they do, it is often a routine shot. Because everyone else who has the same shot knows everyone has it, they don't submit so the panel is left with a small selection from which to choose. Hence, the winner is often something that doesn't really deserve it.
It should be for artistry, for uniqueness, for being clever ....
