Yeah, that is what I was thinking. This isn't an American horse going over to race in the ARC either. These horses are running in the same direction.

However, if I had to pay someone to put that jock on a horse in the Brooklyn the day before I would do it. Getting a 12f race under his belt on that track certainly would help.

Forgot the Brooklyn is the day before. Sure would be a coup for Mario to ride it. Not sure if that could even happen but there's no better practice than to just do it. Who is pointing there?
And listening to some big out a' town jasper, hearing him tell about horse-race gamblin'.
Not a wholesome trottin' race, no, but a race where they sit down right on a horse!
Like to see some stuck-up jockey boy sittin' on Dan Patch?
Make your blood boil? Well, I should say!

Um. How does one mediate a track?
    I think he meant navigate.

Probably did. That's what makes him fun sometimes; he can't think of the word he wants, so he just grabs a word that sounds sorta, kinda, like it . . . or at least has a syllable or two that's the same.

To KD's credit, he does mean mediate (between the horse and track), but FOX news does not do a good job of transcribing the quote--breaking the paragraph and inexplicably adding new quotation marks.

The horses learn it and think it’s time to go because that’s what they know and that’s what they’re trained.

“As a jockey, when you get to Belmont Park, you have to mediate it and that’s very difficult. The horse is ready to fly and you can pull ...

So he's just talking about how horses see the turn as an indicator of Go time, but you can't do that at Belmont.

Maybe they'll bring Square Eddie out of retirement again to run in it!

Why? Lava Man is already there and is at least on the track daily. HAHAHAHA!!!

In all seriousness, having a run with the Brooklyn the day before *would* be a good idea...

Is there anywhere to find the Brooklyn nominations. A quick Google didn't turn up anything.

Noms for the Belmont day stakes have yet to be posted.

I went and re-watched a bunch of failed TC attempts, and it's true, many jockeys move way too early in the race. I'm encouraged by two things: first, the fact that Mario understands his disadvantage and will be making up for it by riding at the track and watching previous Belmonts. Second: his rides in the Derby and Preakness indicate a jockey with the right mindset for the big track. He has delayed setting IHA down to almost the last possible moment in both races, which bodes well for his trip in the Belmont. It does have the shortest stretch of the TC races, but at least I can't see this guy sending his horse with 5 furlongs remaining like some jockeys have in the past.

Funny you bring this up. I was just texting a fellow forumite the other night having done the same and having come to a very similar conclusion.

For I'll Have Another, I think the 'dream' trip would be a replication of his Preakness. It seems that just about every horse that opens up on the backstretch or on the far turn falls short.

Larry Jones better put MV in the Belmont...I don;t think anything is wrong with the horse. They wanted the Belmont instead of the derby and now they are backing out again...Put the horse in or send him to a vet to see if anything is wrong with him. I bet Rosie is disappointed with LJ;S decision. She;s not riding in the big races due to the fact the trainer and the owner just don;t want to run with the big boys. And i think MV is one of the best 3 yr. olds. I will be disappointed if he doesn;t go. I don't care where he goes next, if he doesn; t face this field. I hope Rosie gets another mount and wins with that horse. Hope its a real big field as i do not want IHA to win this even tho he's a real nice race horse who won me a lot of money and i won;t soon forget him. But bring in the best you can and make him work for the T.C.

Mario was getting after him while they swung out of the turn - I think right when the whip came down as the camera cut to the stretch view might be the "sweet spot" he needs in the Belmont, especially if there's less to run at until the wire comes. There is NO reason to get rolling until you're on the second half of the turn, and if Mario can wait and bank his horse, he will definitely be in a good spot. I don't think IHA liked those tight turns all that much, his back end was wiggling all over the place until a few jumps into the straight away.

All of the failed TC runs I can think of came when the star was fading and overtaken. Has there ever been a case where the horse was coming but just couldn't get there? I don't want to think about the opposite of the usual issue happening, but...

Totally agree, Dustin. A repeat of the Preakness would be just right. And another thing- I know people talk about the danger of overlooked frontrunners in the Belmont, but it's hard to be afraid of any speed when you have a horse this tactical who has already run down the best frontrunner in the crop.

I think he's just not very good at switching leads. Note that he actually spends the first part of the Preakness on the wrong lead- he broke on his left and looked pretty off-kilter in the first quarter mile. Later, he needed some help from Mario to switch in the stretch. It may be worth wondering how this difficulty, coupled with his so-so cornering ability, will factor into the big turns at Belmont.

It is interesting to note that the failed TC horses almost always held the lead at some point before hitting the stretch- even War Emblem worked up to the front (with 5 furlongs left!) before fading. I have difficulty seeing the same scenario with IHA, if Mario gives him a good ride. It's worth noting that in the first two legs, IHA has been three lengths behind at the eighth pole. Since Silver Charm, every single TC candidate except for Charismatic has been in the lead by the 1/8 pole in both the Derby and Preakness. Charismatic? He was a half length behind the Derby. We're looking at a new type of TC contender here.

So I suppose, if anything, I'm worried that he'll ease up if he doesn't have a target midway through the stretch. This could potentially make him vulnerable to a late closer- which would test his ability to rebreak in the stretch- but I don't foresee a fading finish.

Matz said several riders were considered, including Ramon Dominguez and Joel Rosario.

“This is what we came up with. I hope we made the right decision,” said Matz, who said Velazquez and his agent, Angel Cordero Jr., made a multi-race commitment to Union Rags. “We wanted somebody that was up in New York.”

Hopefully Johnny doesn't get blamed now if the horse loses again.

Are they ever going to come out of a race and just say "well we weren't the best horse today"?

This is a great analysis, but it also made me smile a little, because the last three TC winners also all had the lead before hitting the stretch, too. It just tells me how spectacular those animals were, and how tactical this race can be (Affirmed and Slew also had identical, slow times up to the 6 furlong pole if I was hearing correctly).

I'm going to have to go back and watch those races again, but generally a horse that won't switch leads or needs help is maybe a little sore. I know they mentioned some hind end stiffness as being the reason for shockwave treatments, but now I'm wondering if he isn't starting to feel a little wear and tear from his schedule. They do have his chiropractor with him at all times too. I guess we won't know if anything is bothering him unless he doesn't win and Team O'Neill needs to offer up excuses.

I don't think Jeremy Rose had ridden much if at all at Belmont. Thought he did pretty well in the supposed Bermuda Triangle.
