    R.I.P. NYRA

By Nick Kling for The Record - May 22, 2012

“The New York Racing Association (NYRA) died suddenly today. Although the end came quickly, it was not unexpected.

Organized in 1955, the once robust racing association was afflicted with multiple ailments: institutional arrogance, a troubled Thoroughbred racing industry, and most debilitating of all, constant meddling by agenda-driven politicians.

I wonder if we'll ever find out the name of the person who notified Crist about the takeout error.

It's a mess - that's for sure. But arrogance, greed, and graft exists on both sides of the issue. There are definitely some axes being grinded. Maybe they can start over - sweep the politicos out of office and find an "honest" organization to run NY racing.

    Sure.... right!

Oh, Serling and Byk are going to be upset with you guys reporting bad news on NYRA. LOL

This was inevitable. Corrupt organizations always fall.

Hope this leads to an improvement, and not just the politicians cutting out the middle man.

Yeah, the criminals at NYRA are not to blame. It is the politicians. Give it up already. Did the politicians screw up the takeout?

You want an honest organization, sell it to a private company that actually has to be accountable to shareholders.

Give up my opinion? Not! But do continue. Your grasp of the situation is so impressive.

Politicians will screw up anything where money is involved.

I couldn't agree more about Politicians screwing up things wherever money is involved. The only people worse are not-for-profits corporations. LOL

Gambling of any type should always be privatized. Even the lottery. The government is not supposed to be in the gambling business and neither are not-for-profits. The fact that taxpayer dollars had to bail out a gambling operation like NYRA is disgraceful.

Honest organization? Do Stronach Group, CDI, Bay Meadows Holding Company, Betfair, Greenwood, MTR Gaming, or Penn National Gaming qualify?

Yes. Any organization that has to ANSWER to people with money invested in them is. That is what accountability is all about. If they do anything illegal and screw investors that is what the Department of Justice is for.

    Full press release linked below.

    The nitty-gritty of the reorg:

” The NYRA Reorganization Board will be comprised of a majority of publicly appointed directors, with a Chair nominated by the Governor. The Board will be in effect for 3 years to restructure and reorganize NYRA, following which NYRA will revert back to majority private control. The current NYRA Board will be dissolved. The NYRA Reorganization Board will go into effect when a majority of the new public directors are appointed.

Once appointed, the new board will conduct a national search for a new CEO and General Counsel for NYRA. The NYRA Reorganization Board will consist of 17 directors. Seven will be appointed by the Governor. The Senate and Assembly will appoint two directors each and five directors will be selected by the current NYRA Board. Breeders and Horsemen will each have an ex officio member. Additionally, a chairperson will be nominated by the Governor subject to Board approval. The current board is 25 directors, with 14 elected by NYRA and 11 appointed by public officials.

I never thought NYRA could be more poorly run, but these clowns might do it. Just sell the thing off already. The land, the casinos, all of it. Some Vegas group would love to buy it.

Really. Why don't you tell us about all the dishonesty with facts. This way I can pass it along to the shareholders and the DOJ.

    Facts please.

The racing will still be the best in the country. Purses dictate the racing and NY has the biggest money. The difference is racing won't be getting a blackeye every week with some $500k NYRA head screwing things up.

Durkin will never be let go. His health doesn't look too good though.
