He seems to lift up the quality of his calls for the bigger races-I've noticed that in his Haskell calls over the years.

At least he didn't sound like Denman, Johnson or Battaglia, so I'll take it.

Or Tom D as of late. Man, the pregnant pauses are rapidly multiplying.

I do seems to remember pauses in Luke's calls at CD before his death.

Exactly. You summarized better than I would have, but with the same theme.

The voice doesn't fit just like the horse's name doesn't fit.

It feels like the junior varsity Triple Crown.

I thought it fit the situation perfectly. That was an incredible stretch run. I'd rather my callers sound just as excited as I feel and add to the whole situation instead of sounding bored about it all.

My fav is Vic Stauffer. I wish he'd take over NYR and the TC races. He reminds me of the Durkin of old.

You talk about pauses in racecalls? Wow, Vic is the worst offender by a mile. Hell, in the race with Guidopanzini last Sunday he even admitted he didn't know who the horse in the middle of the dueling trio was. Did he memorize silks?

Until someone posted that thread about Lava Man I had forgotten about the atrocity that was his call in the 2007 Hollywood Gold Cup. It was almost as bad as comparing Azeri to Ruffian, Lady's Secret and Personal Ensign. That was beyond embarrassing.

That's horrible, what an awful thing to say.

I don't remember Vic ever sounding as bad as Durkin has in the last year. Perhaps Vic's are sporadic. Durkin is every race now.

At least Durkin knows he is a professional race caller. Vic has been playing around as a jockey agent and it detracts from his day job.

Look guys, I know Durkin is royalty and rightly so, he's been fabulous. He is the voice of racing...but, IMO, every single time I hear him, the pauses get worse. He still has the verve but he is not nearly what he used to be. Yes, I know, none of us are, however, in his profession, it's really awful to hear...for many reasons. And I don't believe you do not see it. It's obvious.

Nobody is better than Jim McGrath, but if anyone is close it would be Durkin. Durkin on a bad day is better than everyone else in the US.

I don't disagree that he is not what he used to be. But even on his worst day he is better than Vic the homer....and I don't believe you don't see it. It's obvious.

Here's the thing with him- he seems like a nice enough guy, but to listen to him call a race is like nails on a chalk board.

I do enjoy Vic, Mike Wrona, and Ed Burgart over at Los Al.

I know that there are not any woman callers at any of the major tracks, but are there any anywhere? And, if not, what's up with that?
