Thanks for the stats Uma.
Although DI's numbers look good, I'd like to point out that once his two-year-olds start running this year, those graded races stats will be very hard to increase ( as Japanese calender hasn't got many races of that kind for juveniles). I would expect 80- 90 juveniles runners this year by DI and he'd do well to have a handfull of graded races wins among them.
I agree because grade races for 2yos are just 12, including two G1s, and, furthermore, the 3rd crops for DI is said to dip, at least in quantity (probably less 40 or more, compared with his current 3yos). As for their quality, I am not sure, but more 2yos by other stallions are being talked about than last year; for example, Neo Universe covered many quality mares in 2010, and some progeny have already had good reputations, such as Neo Wisdom, or Gorella (USA) 2010 by Neo Universe, whose trainer, Mr Yoshito Yahagi, boasts that he is 'better than Deep Brillante.'
Why the jockey, Yasunari Iwata, cried has not been reported in the English racing media, as far as I know. So I let you know an episode that caused him to cry.
Of course, this is his first Jpn Derby win, and it may be sufficient for him to be emotional, especially so when putting his long early career as a local NAR jockey, a status having received almost no social attention, from which having stepped up onto the JRA, the central stage in the Japanese racing, in perspective (13,099 races ridden with 2,941 wins in the NAR).
Yet there was a more special aspect to talk of, relevant only to this win. He had been suspended for two weeks after the NHK Mile Cup (G1) in which he veered Mount Shasta, another promising colt for the Jpn Derby, inside to interfere with certain colt, resulting in the jockey's fall, hospitalization, and MS's disqualification. (Also that made him lose the chance to ride Gentildonna in the Jpn Oaks who turned out to be the impressive winner with a record time.) Regretful for his 'unsuitable mistake,' he was determined to try harder.
The next day when he was suspended, he directly called Mr Yahagi, the trainer of Deep Brillante, to ask the trainer to ride him in workouts every day during the suspension. The trainer, 'at first, couldn't decide how to respond to the request because I have trusted my exercise riders who have a due pride in their ability to train the colt,' finally took a chance to his keen enthusiasm for getting clot's bursting power under control because he tends to pull and couldn't settle well in the previous races although he was calm and quiet in his stall.
Having said said, the weeks did not always go peacefully; the trainer admitted that 'Iwata was too eager and single-minded about doing everything best for Deep Brillante to lose a proper contact with us so that I once raised my voice to him not to go beyond his powers.' At the end of suspension period, however, the ground between the jockey and staff 'packed after a rain.'
Finally the jockey's feel at his first ride on the colt that 'I can win a G1 with him,' and his determination to understand the colt and to pull his potential out to the full resulted in his tears in the Tokyo Yushun.
thank you uma for that backround on the emotions of the jockey after his win.
also..i hope the hurt jockey is recovering ok
Thanks.
Also impressed by Tosen Homareboshi as well as the jockey who felt the same way:
'I rode Tosen Jordan in the Japan Cup (2nd) and Arima Kinen (5th) last year, and yet felt that Tosen Homareboshi had more potential than his brother.' (C Williams)
He is several notches better than most JRA jockeys.

Cosmo Ozora (by Roses in May), 6th in the Japanese Derby, suffered a leg fracture duirng the race and will undergo surgery.
Mr Yoshito Yahagi, trainer of Deep Brillante, nominated the Tokyo Yushun winner for the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes in July.
Whether or not the colt is actually sent to the Ascot racecourse with Yashunari Iwata will depend on his physical condition and be determined in a few weeks time.
As one of the reasons, the trainer referred to the Queen's Diamond Jubilee; the colt has some royal blood found in his pedigree that is 'my best racehorse, Highclere.' (the Queen, from the new book by Julian Muscat)
The owner of Deep Brillante, Sunday Racing Co Ltd, announced that the colt would be entered to the King George.
Well, brave is the trainer who was badly beaten twice in his recent attempts in Dubai(2012) and Royal Ascot (2011).

An official announcement says that Deep Brillante will be put into quarantine on 28 June for departure to Britain on 4 July. Over there, he'll take a stall at Clive Brittain Stable, which is the second time since Grand Prix Boss was entered in the St James's Palace Stakes last June. The jockey for the race is Yasunari Iwata.
Posts in major Japanese racing forums suggest that most Japanese fans have negative or mixed feelings to the trainer's decision to have the colt entered to any G1 abroad at this time of the season, which is understandable.
Main points in their objections are: He deserves some longer rest after a series of exhausting group races towards the Jpn triple crown. Sending him to Britain wouldn't be easy for the younger colt that has just turned three, they say.
Since the trainer hadn't nominated the colt for the Arc, although a certain horse in Tokyo Yushun did that, some are grumbling that the decision seems tooabrupt.
Big Red Farm said today in their official blog that Cosmo Ozora came out of surgery fine.
He is expected to resume training in August and will be aimed at the Kikuka Sho(G1)(Japanese St Leger) in October.
