Foals&Yearlings out of Imported Mares
Background:
Japan has long imported excellent broodmares mainly from the US and Europe. They, along with equally excellent imported stallions, has formed an indispensable part of our bloodstock. Recent examples are Azeri, Loves Only Me, Bushfire, Island Fashion, Ginger Punch, Laragh, Magical Fantasy, Gorella, Star Parade, Singhalese, Mandela, Mandelhush, Shoah, Puntilla, Shahtoush, Mandalara, and etc.
On the other hand, whereabouts of their sons and daughters is difficult to know; even harder to have access to their photos because they used to be owned by rich single owners, kept in mothball at remote breeding farms in northern Japan until their debuts.
Happily, though, the tendency seems to begin to change; this is partly because of club horses and their successes. As club horses I refer to horses collectively owned by mainly general fans here in Japan and presented by several racing clubs that have an affiliation with top breeders in Japan like Shadai Farm and Northern Farm where top mares from abroad mainly settle.
So their children being born there, especially fillies, tend to be 'wholesaled' down to such clubs unless presented in the Select Sale as is illustrated by Gorella '08 or Puntilla '08 below. Since the clubs, in turn, are eager to publicize them, they set up promotion homepages in which we often find their photos as yearlings. At the same time, many owners of these horses gladly introduce their 'beloved' ones at their homepages. Hence, we now have two small windows through which to have a look at the offspring of imported mares.
May this thread contribute a little bit to 'rendering to Caesar the things that are Caesar's,' which we have long ignored.
(*) Some club horses turned out to be top horses in each generation, such as Buena Vista (Sunday Racing Club), Vermilion (Sunday Racing Club), Sleepless Night (Sunday Racing Club), Red Desire (Tokyo Thoroughbred Club), Neo Universe (Shadai Thoroughbred Club), Heart's Cry (Shadai Thoroughbred Club), Dance in the Mood (Shadai Thoroughbred Club), and so on.
The photos below were taken by Mr Suzuki (his blog: http://blog.livedoor.jp/msuzuki0048/ ), and he writes that 'if you use these in your own blogs or homepages, please make the sources clear.'

Re: Foals&Yearlings out of Imported Mares
Thank you for these!
Incidentally, what are they wearing on their feet? I've been to Japanese American homes where you are expected to take your shoes off when entering but I never knew that Japanese farms evidently make visitors wear slippers in a pasture. Is that what I am seeing?
Fascinating.

I suppose that the slipper-like footwear is a precautionary measure for preventing equine epidemics.

The broodmare (US), 12yo, was imported in '06, and her first 2yo son in Japan, named Rocket Dive (by Kingmambo), was listed in the Select Sale '07 to be bought for $1.1m by Mr Yamamoto, the owner of Casino Drive.

The dam (by Caerleon) was imported in '01, and died last May. She was born in '87 and was raced (3 wins out of 9 starts) mainly in Ireland and the US. Her '94 son (by Devil's Bag, born in the US) made his debut in Japan under the management of the Japanese trainer, K Fujisawa. The chestnut colt won 5 G1s, including Prix Jacques le Marois '98, selected out for the Japanese HOY '98 as well as an inductee to the JRA Hall of Fame in '99. That is <A href="http://www.jra.go.jp/datafile/dendo/...quot;>Taiki Shuttle</A> (11-1-1-0). The photos show the filly left behind.

Re: Foals&Yearlings out of Imported Mares
Hey,
You don't by any chance have any pictures of Seeking Oasis, do you? Sort of a shot in the dark, and I know you already posted one before of her on the track, but I'm always on the lookout for more, especially since I have no idea what she's up to nowadays.
-
Re: Foals&Yearlings out of Imported Mares
I searched blogs and homepages in Japanese for her photo, but couldn't find it. :undecided:
As you may know, Seeking Oasis suffered a nasal bleeding during the race at Sapporo (dirt 1700m) in August '08, which turned out to be her last race (0-1-0-5). She retired to the breeding shed at, probably, Shadai because her owner is the widow of the late Zenya Yoshida who imported Sunday Silence to Japan. So presumably she was bred to one of stallions at Shadai this spring.
I'll pay attention to her breeding record in order to show you her sons/daughters here.
-
Re: Foals&Yearlings out of Imported Mares
I did not know that she bled and was likely retired, so I thank you for that information! I'll keep an eye out for info about her potentially foaling next year, though you'll probably know before I will!

The dam, Gold Day, 13yo, is by Seeking the Gold out of Kelly's Day, the dam of Brian's Time. She was imported in '06 and produced two fillies in Japan; one is by Arch in '07, who is named Any Day, the other is the beautiful filly by Deep Impact. She will be trained by Mr K Sumii, the Vodka's trainer.

Re: Foals&Yearlings out of Imported Mares
Princess Olivia (USA), the dam of Flower Alley, by Lycius x Dance Image (Sadler's Wells), was imported to Shadai Farm in '05 (bought for $825K at Keeneland Nov '05). In Japan she produced three foals:
1) '06: by Monashee Mountains (dead foal)
2) '07: Blooming Alley a 3yo bay filly by Symboli Kris S,
3) '08:a dark bay colt by Deep Impact,
4) '09: a bay colt by Deep Impact.
Blooming Alley made her debut at Tokyo Racecourse in Oct 11, '09, and won. See <A href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxa-bC6rKJc">the race</A> (#13). She was the runner-up in her next two races:
●15 Nov '09 at Tokyo:<A href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4pua...t;>Akamatsu Sho</A>: She is #9, and the winner, Apapane (King Kamehameha x Salty Bid), turned out to be the best 2yo filly, winning Hanshin Jubenile Filly (G1) at Hanshin.
●13 Dec '09 at Hanshin:<A href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iznIG...quot;>Erica Sho</A>. She was #3, lost by a neck.
Some thinks she should be counted among the top group of 3yos fillies. No doubt a good filly.

Im soooo looking forward to updates on Ginger Punch and her baby!

Re: Foals&Yearlings out of Imported Mares
this is a fabulous series of photos. the information, as you rightly say, is not available to those outside the racing business in Japan. So this is a very important addition to our awareness of Japanese breeding
Best of luck,

from the blog: <A href="http://blog.goo.ne.jp/amabile_2007/e...5">the One Share Owner: Gonzales Diary</A>.
According to the blog, the filly has been falling behind in training although what caused the delay is not clearly mentioned. 'Going up ladders step by step, paying a carefull regard to her natural growth' is the raising principle of her caretakers at Northern Farm, it says.
Also, her trainer is supposed to be Mr Yahagi who was 2nd in the JRA trainer's ranking (in terms of wins) last year. His stable has been distinguishing itself for these few years, one of JRA trainers whom I've personally been watching closely.

Re: Foals&Yearlings out of Imported Mares
What is the plan with Magical Fantasy? I absolutely adored her on the track, and was actually able to handle her at Fasig last year. (My shock at the handler holding out the lead nearly keeled me over)
-
Re: Foals&Yearlings out of Imported Mares
I have no idea. That said, she was bought by Shadai Farm, and it's obvious that she will be bred to one of Shadai stallions.
