    Dwyer Stakes (6-30)

teeth of the dog wins it (gamely), but it looked like monarchic pulled up? any news?

Good gutty effort by Teeth of the Dog, but have to have a bit of a hard time believing he ran much better today when he was well-beaten in the Preakness. Should be a nice horse to run in the 'B' races for Matz. Maybe even take a swing at the Jim Dandy/Travers, assuming Matz doesn't have the Haskell/Double in mind for Union Rags. Probably ultimately best suited to run for big checks at Mountaineer, Parx, and Hoosier, though. No shame in that.

    "NYRA ‏@NYRAnews
Dwyer: Monarchic pulled up at 3/8 pole with a non-displaced condular fracture of the right fore. Vanned back to barn for further observation"

@dustin; nothing wrong for sure, if he can pick up some checks and run consistently, more power to him and his connections!

    hopefully, monarchic will be ok.

Oh definitely amen to that. I've always felt that the smartest connections are the ones who don't follow the allure of being 10/1 in the Travers and chase the money at Mountaineer, Parx, Prairie Meadows, Hoosier, etc. No, winning the PA Derby doesn't look as sexy, but hey...the money spends just as well. He is a gritty animal, though. Zito's horse had every right to go past him and that just never happened. That's probably part on Zito's horse, but propts to TOTD for digging in.

The more I look at the results of the 3 year olds, the more I think IHA and Bode were/are just heads above this crop. Maybe he could have a shot at races like the JD and Travers Dustin? (unless UR, Hansen, Gemologist, CC, etc really step it up)

Teeth of the Dog 1st here, was 5th in the Preakness.
Zetterholm, 4th here, was 4th in the Preakness.
Guyana Star Dweej, 5th here, pulled up in the Belmont
Unstoppable U, 6th (last if you don't counting the horse who pulled up), 6th in the Belmont.

    Nondisplaced sounds hopeful anyway.

I absolutely think that by year's end, the gap between Bodemeister and I'll Have Another, as compared to horses like Creative Cause, Gemologist, Union Rags, Dullahan, Hansen, Went the Day Well, Paynter, Alpha, etc. will be marked as somewhat significant. It's not a great gap, but those two horses, IMO, are the best two of this crop.

However, by that same token, I don't think many trainers will be clamoring to enter the starting gate against any of those 8 horses, either. They're good horses that are going to be competitive in a lot of important races.

By the time you get to these fringe horses - someone like a Teeth of the Dog, Liaison, Daddy Nose Best, Rousing Sermon, etc - need to make their money running where those 8-10 horses aren't running. I'd guess that too many of those horses will be at Saratoga to really want to run a horse like Teeth of the Dog there. Go to Parx and be 6/1 to take home a 1000k pot. It's better business sense.

    Re: Dwyer Stakes (6-30)

Matz says Jim Dandy or West Virginia Derby for Teeth of the Dog.

    Haskell

    Bode
    UR
    Gemologist
    Dullahan
Unstoppable U (though I would doubt this anymore after his Dwyer finish)

    Jim Dandy

    Gemologist
    Alpha
    Went the Day Well
    Atigun
    Street Life
    Paynter
    Teeth of the Dog

    West Virginia Derby

    Hansen
    Teeth of the Dog

I like Teeth of the Dog but i kind of wonder if he has a chance of winning if Hansen enters the race or if he'll just be running for place or show money

Teeth of the Dog will most likely be running for place or show money in any decent graded stakes race Matz puts him in. And that's not a knock on the horse. That's just a realization that there are a lot of nice horses in this crop, and there aren't always a ton of opportunities to hide from those horses. They got lucky this weekend because I think a lot of the Haskell-bound Triple Crown horses are looking to run there off the layoff, so the field ended up up being a handful of Preakness/Belmont also-rans and not much else.

If they put him in the gate against a combination of horses like Bodemeister, Union Rags, Hansen, Dullahan, Gemologist, Alpha, Went the Day Well, Paynter, or Creative Cause, he's probably not going to beat them. Right now, they're just superior animals.

    From Brisnet

Trainer Michael Matz reported Sunday morning that Teeth of the Dog (Bluegrass Cat), determined winner of Saturday's Grade 2 Dwyer at Belmont Park, was enjoying the first day of his summer vacation at the Fair Hill training centerin Elkton, Maryland. "He was out in the paddock this morning and it looked like he was enjoying himself," Matz said. "We'll look for something for him in about five or six weeks." Among the options Matz mentioned for Teeth of the Dog is the Grade 2 Jim Dandy at Saratoga on July 28. Matz added that Belmont Stakes winner Union Rags (Dixie Union) would likely make his next start in the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on July 29 in preparation for the Grade 1 Travers at Saratoga on August 28.

They are lucky horses. Been to Fair Hill to take a trail ride and it's gorgeous! Hope to get back there sometime in the near future.

He wants the horse to have five or six weeks, but mentions the Jim Dandy as an option? It's less than 4 weeks from July 1 to July 28.

He may want five or six weeks, or he may want the JD. But he can't want both.

True. I would imagine they are going to see how well he rebounds and trains following the Dwyer before making any definitive plans? Either that, or Matz needs to carry a pocket calendar around with him when he's being interviewed.
