It'll be interesting to see how much Samantha Nicole goes for. On one hand, she's a full sister to a Horse of the Year (and, from the couple of pictures I've seen of her, looks a lot like her). On the other hand, I've no idea how she stacks up conformotionally, and as far as I'm aware, if you remove Rachel from the equation, the family isn't hugely distinguished, and Rachel is still the only foal of her dam's to make it to the track.

What about Lotta Kim? It doesn't sound like she's included in the dispersal.

True, but besides Rachel, she only has one other foal of racing age. I don't think they'll hold that against her too much. Plus, Lotta Kim herself is a stakes winner and graded stakes placed. I'd be more concerned about how Lotta Kim doesn't seem to get/stay in foal easily. She had Rachel in 2006, Empire Ruler in 2007, and then nothing until Samantha Nicole in 2011. But all that would mostly go against Lotta Kim if she sells, perhaps not Samantha Nicole.

Empire Ruler passed away a few years ago

Diagnosed as a wobbler and euthanized as a two year old, according to Pedigree Query.

Lotta Kim seems to have really, really bad luck. Maybe it's the karmic price of foaling a Rachel.

I know it's not as if she'd had eleven foals, and only Rachel won, but it's still a lack of data for sellers to work with. I really hate to draw the inevitable Rachel/Zenyatta comparison (I really do!), but if Zenyatta had a full sister that went to auction, you could pretty much guarantee the price would be huge, unless the sister had three legs (and possibly even then, as she'd still have broodmare value), and that's not all about Zenyatta. It's because she comes from an amazing family.

By comparison, Rachel's is...respectable. Granted, I haven't checked to see what Lotta Kim's sisters have done as broodmares, but basically I get the impression in the last few generations it's produced a few stakes horses, a few unremarkable horses, and one superstar, and said superstar doesn't have a foal of racing age yet.

We should get several pictures of Samantha Nicole, at least. I'm curious to see if she still looks as much like her sister as she did as a foal.

I was told that Lotta Kim was retired when she slipped in a wash rack and ripped the skin between her back legs -- that could have something to do with it?
And listening to some big out a' town jasper, hearing him tell about horse-race gamblin'.
Not a wholesome trottin' race, no, but a race where they sit down right on a horse!
Like to see some stuck-up jockey boy sittin' on Dan Patch?
Make your blood boil? Well, I should say!

    Bloodhorse says in their article:

McGehee said Lotta Kim, the stakes-winning 11-year-old dam of Rachel Alexandra, is not included in the sale because she has reproductive issues.

She was bred this year to Lookin At Lucky. Anyone know if she's still in foal?

I'm pretty sure that the original BH article cut off after the second paragraph and the stuff about Lotta Kim is an update. Thanks for pointing that out!

(Of course, being nosy, I'm still curious. Is she in foal? Is this something that will pass and they are still planning to sell her at a later sale, or is she being retired from breeding? 'Reproductive issues' is vague.)
