    Oh wow ... That's surprising ...

Well, at least he's staying in SoCal and with the switch to O'Neill, I can actually go meet him. Baffert's barn isn't exactly the most open barn in SoCal. Always loved Richard's Kid, so I'd love to meet him.

Wow, must have been offered a very nice price for him considering he could possibly be on his way to a PC win and maybe bigger and better things. He seems to do best with Baffert so far, so hopefully the switch in trainers doesn't effect him.

posted on FB by Del Mar racing

Richard’s Kid, the double winner of the TVG Pacific Classic, was sold privately Saturday to a four man group and shifted from the barn of trainer Bob Baffert to that of Doug O’Neill. The selling price was undisclosed for the 7-year-old horse by Lemon Drop Kid, a winner of 11 races and more than $1.9-million.

The new ownership group is led by Steve Boghossian’s Triple B Farms and also consists of Mark Verge’s Westside Rentals, Dave Kenny and Steve Keh. The owners have indicated that the horse will run in the Pacific Classic as planned.

I can't think Baffert is happy about losing Richard's Kid from his barn....again. Feel bad, he was extremely happy to have him back.

No genius on my part guessing Westside Rentals had a hand in this.

They plan on racing him as an 8 year old full horse? Probably so, LDK isn't yet a "sire of sires," though Richard's Kid may be his first son to be very well liked at stud.

Couple of folks on Twitter say they are hearing around $1M. That seems low to me, but I am generally ignorant about this sort of thing.

Rafael Bejarano will get first call, but Mike Smith may ride, according to Leandro Mora.

Interesting perspective from Paulick: Hope sale of Richard's Kid by Zabeel Racing Intl not an indication that Sheikh Mohammed's oldest son is getting out of horse biz in U.S.

I don't like this sale AT ALL. I love that he is still racing however.

The foundation that Richard Small put into him as a young horse paid off handsomely. Richard's Kid is from the old Richard Small school of drop far back and make one enormous late run.

Way to be loyal to the guy who turned the horse back into a viable commodity for you, Sheik Junior. First you snatch him off to Dubai just before the 2010 BCC (in which I think he'd have had a good shot), then after he stinks up the middle East for 18 months you send him back to Bob, who returns him to graded stakes winning form. Then (if the price is accurate) you dump him a week before a race he could very well win for 60% of the reported price, ensuring that Baffert's work isn't rewarded. Stay classy.

This is exactly how i feel. But on the other hand at least Richard's Kid is staying in SoCal this time.

Re: Richard's Kid sold; new owners, new trainer?

Of the sale of Richard's Kid, Baffert said he was surprised and somewhat disappointed.

"It was handled very unprofessionally. But, it happens, so move on," Baffert summed up.

It's a very odd choice indeed. My first thought was they offered a price he couldn't refuse. But seems like that wasn't the case. Which makes things a little more interesting. Like I said, I know this happens to trainers all the time, but they have feelings too, and Baffert can't be pleased with this. Especially since it's RK and he was clearly very happy to have him back in the barn in the first place. Odd time to make this sale too, so shortly before a big race like the PC. Hope the switch in barns and anything that comes with it doesn't effect him. I have no problem with him being switched to O'Neill though.

Didn't Baffert get a horse right before a big race (from a Sheik??) and got the credit for the eventual win that some other trainer would've gotten? I can't remember the horse at the moment...

He was in the mid east running but he was sent back to the US because he was a bleeder

I thought the timing was a bit odd, too. I'm glad he's still running in the PC, though. At least it's not like the only good horse Baffert has in his barn.

War Emblem, who was bought shortly after (I think?) the IL Derby by the late Sheik Salman, and ....well, you know the rest!

The timing is odd, the price is low, it's all very odd indeed.

On HRTV this morning, Mark Verge said the partnership group that had originally been assembled wanted to send RK to Australia. Looks like now that he's a partner he can exercise his muscle to keep him here. Would love to see him stand as a stallion here (as in CA), too. With In Excess being pensioned and Unusual Heat's best days behind him, the CA breeding program, such as it is, needs a boost from a high-profile stallion. Of course, if he wins the BC Classic, that could eclipse any thought of standing him in CA. Just please, not another one to Japan, that's all I ask.
