Decoder (filly, War Front - Database) goes Monday in the first at Saratoga for Mr. Janney. Has been training often with Beat the Drums so I am hopeful that she may show something early on. Good to see the first of the 2 year-olds make it to the starting gate.

She's been working pretty nicely, so I really can't wait to see her run.

It was a brave race from Hymn Book in the Whitney and it is great to see JV riding the horses again. There is probably no reason why Hymn Book won't go for the Jockey Club Stakes assuming that the brave ittle guy remains well. Point of Entry remains on course for the Sword Dancer and Boisterous for the Arlington Million. As was suggested earlier, Reload didn't care much for the conditions in the Curlin, which was an awful shame as he was training superbly. The Pennsylvania Derby was the tentative plan if he had run well but things remain on hold at the moment. Trophy Wife and State Flag have good chances later today and it will be particularly interesting to see how the filly goes with a better trip and the extra distance that she should love. That said, the weather is likely to intervene and although she goes well in the slop, it would be nice to see her run on the turf and against this field. The hope is to run Beat the Drums during the meet and we should learn a little more about her after Decoder makes her debut.

Very pleased with Trophy Wife. Has plenty of scope for the future and very much reminds me of her dam in her running style. Unfortunately, the weather ruined State Flag's chances.

Trophy Wife ran a very nice race, I hope she is a late bloomer like her dam, a favorite of mine. With regards to State Flag, Johnny V realized that State Flag couldn't handle the turf after the monsoon hit after race 1 and didn't push him. I was amazed that any of the horses managed to run over that course. As Steve Christ mentioned on his DRF blog, Race 1 and 2 were run in approximately the same time. Race 1 was 9.5F and race 2 was 9F.

Thanks Cladan - don't get onto site as much as I would like - your posts are always appreciated. Decoder is a beauty, but has some growing up to do - didn't show much today. The commentator on TVG kept saying that she would need time and longer races before she shows her real ability.

War Front has certainly sired some lookers and Decoder looks very much like her brother, lots of muscle and a beautiful head. The family have really liked War Front with the In Reality line broodmares and although it's still early days, the foals have a nice quality to them. Decoder certainly looks like a filly who will do well on the turf, so fingers crossed. Speaking of the brother, Data Link is scheduled to run over the weekend.

    Hi Buckpasser!
How have you been? A very sad time for my favorite handicapper & Phipps fan, Steve Crist. I doubt Steve reads our board, but sorry for your loss, Steve. Every time I would see Steve I would ask about his mother, film critic Judith Crist. Our prayers are with you.

    Hey Bob,

Hope you have been well. I second your sentiments for Steve. RIP Judith.

Beat the Drums entered in 6th on Sunday. Hopefully it will be an easier race than Decoder ran in (no Pletcher-trained horse in this race at least). Good luck to the next generation.

Overwhelming (2c, Hard Spun x Oh What a Windfall) entered in 6th on Saturday - Pletcher has the 7/5 morning-line favorite in this one. Not expecting much first time out.

Data Link goes in the Fourstardave also on Saturday. He's 3-1, second on morning-line, in a competitive race.

Has there ever been anything like Todd Pletcher's 2yo's this year? Almost everyone of his runners debuts off nothing but 59- second drills and winning by open lengths at odds-on. He has a dozen juvenile wins at the meet and it's only August 9th! Sure looks set to get at least his 13th in Overwhelming's race from that work tab. This success rate is almost beyond logic.

Pletcher's 2 year-olds have been insane. I was surprised to see no Pletcher runner in Beat the Drums' race - he seems to have a horse in every juvenile race -my first thought was - "she has a chance".

Unfortunately Data Link was scratched. And Overwhelming did not appear to like the sloppy going, lagging behind for much of the race. Good learning experience, I'd guess, though.

Overwhelming got off really slow which didn't help. Hoping for better luck (and no rain) tomorrow for Beat the Drums...

Darn - Beat the Drums was scratched - hope she's ok...

    Re: Phipps horses

Subsonic and Beat the Drums both listed as vet scratches. Seems quite strange. The stable may not always have the fastest runners but they are generally sound as can be.

Can someone clarify the process for a vet scratch?

    Point of Entry, Photo Tease:

When I strolled down Hall of Famer McGaughey's shedrow, one of my favorites on the Saratoga backside since the old-school style and colors take you back to another era, Point of Entry's name caught my eye. The 4-year-old Dynaformer homebred out of the Seeking the Gold mare Matlacha Pass knew how to turn on the racehorse pose - eventually. But first he had to be bribed to come to the front of the stall, and then... well, you saw the photos.
