Farewell El Segundo - retired also this week
2007 Cox Plate winner, El Segundo, another casualty, retiring this week also, after suffering a career ending tendon injury in Saturday's Group 1 STC George Ryder Stakes over 1500m.
Ironically it was the gelding's first interstate trip, after trainer Colin Little had kept the gelding in Victoria.
Always a injury prone galloper, and like Light Fantastic, he was never able to reach his full potential in a career that only say him race 35 times, and accumulated 12 wins and a staggering $3,964,375 in earnings.
He will best remembered for his win in the southern hemisphere's premier WFA event the Group 1 WS Cox Plate over 2040m at the Valley of Champions, Moonee Valley.
However, that was not his only major success. As a spring 4YO he won the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes over 2000m, Underwood Stakes over 1800m and CF Orr Stakes over 1400m.
Its still being established where he will retire to, but there is talk he may go to Living Legends.

THe good thing is that we still have horse like the 12-year-old Mustard doing his work every other week or so!
