They need to push the Breeders cup back a week

I might be dreaming or what not, but I could have sworn, when I first started following racing the Breeders Cup was at the end of October.

Every year the biggest shift in weather is seems, is the week after Halloween. Last week I could wear shorts outside, I could go to the gym in my gym clothes. Now, it's 40 degrees outside lol.

I think they could get better crowds if they moved the event back a week.

And just think, if the Saturday races were on Sunday, because of the clocks going back, we could see the last three races under the lights. As it stands now, it will probably be a nice balmy 38 degrees by post time for the Classic. That's good weather.....for football or outdoor hockey

When the BC started, there was three weeks after the major preps. Now it is 5 weeks. In the first running, Slew O Gold won the Marlboro, Woodward, and JCGC in 29 days and then ran in the Classic 21 days later. That is 41 furlongs in 50 days. Zen will run 45 furlongs from April 9th till November 6. The Goat ran 35 furlongs his entire HOY year campaign.

I love the BC just because of the quality of racing but I hate what it has done to the sport.

I agree. Needs to be at least one week earlier and better at two. Same as all the other sports --- it is about elongating seasons to get more money for the big boys. They will not be sitting out in the cold like Joe Common

Re: They need to push the Breeders cup back a week

When I hear push it back a week I think of another week into November not moving it to an earlier week in the year. But yes I remember it being in October not November, but actually I think they did it to help out the final preps in ways, since trainers want at least 5 weeks now between races instead of the 3/4 as the JC gold cup is now 5 weeks out from the BC as many of the other stakes that were final preps run that weekend. I don't think the BC had anything to do with trainers wanting more time between races, but I do think it has diluted the quality of races during the year, as everyone wants to stay apart until the BC so that if they win at it they can say they are the best instead of meeting several times during the year and proving you are superior by winning more meetings (mostly directed to older horses since the 3 year olds tend to run against each other a lot more). It is sort of like with Zenyatta, is she really that good? I think she is and I think she has proven it for the most part, but there is still that voice saying she has only beaten males once and on a synthetic track, yes she has won all grade 1's this year against fillies and mares, it is hard to tell how good some horses are from just one really tough race all year. Who is better Quality Road or Blame? In their one meeting Blame beat him, but most people still think QR is better. That is what I don't like about the BC is connections avoiding each other with top horses so they only have to meet once and hopefully win and there fore win whatever title they are going for.

The BC is about avoiding the World Series so they get a 0.6 rating instead of a 0.4. Amazing how far it has sunk. The first BC got a 5.1

the original reason why the time slot varied because it was Nbc and they
had to wait unit there was a break from the Notre Dame football game

Which falls directly in line with what I said. I'm 27, the first BC I ever watched was pleasantly perfects, which I am 100% sure was in October becuase we played ole miss that day, we play ole miss at the end of october

All of the BCs at Belmont have been a week earlier to compensate for weather. The Florida and Cali BCs have generally been in the first week of Nov. I bet the Woodbine and Arlington BCs were in Oct. Too lazy to look it up.

I don't know why they wait another week at Churchill. It can be damn cold there this time of year.

Wanna bet that it has something to do with the fact that Keeneland closed last Saturday and that the October dates in Kentucky belong to that track.

Then they need to fix it lol. Oak Tree routinely closes for instance, the last week of October, like this year. But closes the first week of November when the BC is held there.

I went to the BC in 91 and it was COLD. Snowing lightly from what I remember. Still had a blast and dressed for the weather. If you can't handle the cold you shouldn't go to the races. The horses seemed to love it. That is all that should matter IMO.

Some people, bit there was still a HUGE crowd in 91 despite the weather. Of course, that was a long time ago and horse racing seemed more popular then. At least to me it did.

I prefer freezing cold to ungodly hot any day of the week.
It is supposed to snow on Friday, but Saturday is sunny.
