Your don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.....RZ
After that loss she belongs with those names. Seriously. Blast me all you want, doubters. Greatness shown through defeat. Rarely happens, but when it does it's special. She shouldn't have been fourth.
Pretty much what I was thinking, Slew. Greatness in defeat counts just as much to me. I never want to be so cynical that I can't appreciate an amazing horse when it's right in front of my eyes. She belongs right up there with the greats.

You won't hear a complaint out of me. She proved more to me int hat lost then all the cup cake city wins she had out there. Tip of the hat.
I had blame.. quite heavily I might add and I was on the ground pounding the ground pulling for Z lol, my next door neighborhood thought i was beating someone up and came and knocked on the door.
I believe she belongs with those greats.
I'll leave her ranking to the historians. For me, thank you Zenyatta, it was an incredible heart stopping ride and hope your connections give you the opportunity to end your career on a winning note.
Questing to find out who the best 3 year old in the country is.
"If anything is certain. It is that change is certain"
Thank you for this thread. She is amazing.
I was actually thinking about that fact after the race. And like everyone else I agree she belongs with them.
"You can debate it until the cows come home, but a New-Mexico bred mare has just done the improbable," Track announcer concerning Pepper's Pride breaking the 16-win streak record.
She has the same record as Citation at 3. Only what he could do in one year she did in 3.
That move was supernatural. I hate losses by a nose or a single jump just because they do not tell me one hires is better; simply that there were two very good horses, and it had to come down to racing luck. For me this was a simply astounding race for Z (and Blame! What a guy) even if she didn't ge those last 6 inches.
This post made me smile. I was so focused on the record for a few minutes following the race. This post gave me real perspective! She belongs there.
And listening to some big out a' town jasper, hearing him tell about horse-race gamblin'.
Not a wholesome trottin' race, no, but a race where they sit down right on a horse!

Make your blood boil? Well, I should say!
I think even the nay-sayers would have to say that even though she didn't win, the question of whether or not she can run on dirt has been answered. My eyes almost popped out of my head when I saw that move in the stretch....
Win, lose, or draw...LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!
Searching is half the fun. Life is much more manageable when it is thought of as a scavenger hunt as opposed to a surprise party.

I've been reading these forums for awhile, but I registered because of this thread. Man, I found a lot of people who are as proud of Zenyatta as I am! I went to Del Mar to see Cigar try and win the Pacific Classic and knew 6F into the race that he was doomed. With this Classic, I thought I knew at the break that Zenyatta was doomed. Things didn't improve until just before the turn.
And then she did... THAT.
Only Zenyatta could lose better than any other horse. She is certainly unique. I think we forget sometimes how much defeat can show heart, and she sure showed that today. Blame had a great trip, a fantastic ride, and he laid himself down. My hat is off to him. But Zenyatta... good grief. I've never seen her do something that amazing before.
She probably went back to her barn thinking that this track just didn't hand out flowers.
I'm drinking some Woodford Reserve tonight for her.
And I am crushed for Mike Smith. I hope Jerry Moss bought him the most expensive glass of red wine that exists. He has nothing to be sorry for. Nothing. Can't wait to see him back in California and tell him that myself.
Your comments here have been fantastic. I look forward to coming out of this Breeder's Cup fog and talking about other horses. Y'know... at some point!
And let's not forget that truly winning is not everything. Gallantry and effort in defeat has defined champions before.
Azeri - 24:17-4-0
Lady's Secret - 45: 25-9-3
Secretariat - 21:16-3-1
Cigar - 33: 19-4-5
Spectacular Bid - 30: 26-2-1
Not making any comparisons, just noting, winning is not always everything. These guys still get all of our love; Big Z earned hers, too!

Somewhere in horsey heaven Kincsem is laughing.
the mistake that Z fans have made and have made for 2 years now, is that they assumed win - loss records equate greatness. By the time she hit 8-9 and 0 the record was such a nuisance that her campaign was way too micromanaged.
Beating great race horses and putting in great efforts/performances, equates greatness. That is why Dan Marino, Charles Barkley, Karl Malone are considered some of the best to ever play their sport, championships or not.
Today, she did that today. With everything on the line, she went and swallowed up all but one horse and fought him tooth in nail with 5 million on the line, with immortality on the line and damn near pulled it out. And has my respect.
