Moreover, while nearly all his larger-than-average foals showed real promise early, nearly none of them have been able to stay on the track. [Mandella has a large Smarty filly in his barn; when she can run, she usually runs well. But she spends a lot of time off track.]

And, before someone chimes in: yes, he can throw really small foals too -- particularly fillies.
She is a small, stocky mare, but she's very sound. Her foals seem to be in the small side as well, so now I'm happy that we did not end up with Smarty.

Yeah, my Dad has his heart set on a Smarty baby. His opinion is that if the baby is small then atleast it will hopefully be sound. And is praying that it can run.

Size is irrelevant if you race. I have a mare that is *maybe* 15hh needing a trim and she was an open stakes horse who ran a 97 beyer.......

A Smarty Jones 2YO named Concealed Identity just won the Maryland Juvy Stakes; that won't hurt his fee any in the Mid-Atlantic. ;-)

I'm also curious about putting $100,000 type stud fees in the mare but now dropping sharply. Who has she had babies by thus far?

My Dad loved Smarty coming off the track, and felt that he showed the potential to be a great stallion and was worth the $100,000. He has now changed his tune and thinks that after what Smarty has shown he's a good value at $10,000.

To my Dad stud fees don't matter, it's what the stallion has done, what his progeny have done, and if he suits the mare. He's aiming for a nice sound horse that can run and last more then a year at the track. He also is planning on taking advantage of the PA bred programs.

As to who she's had foals by? I will have to double check, I know that she was barren this year. I will update this post as soon as I get a chance to check with my Dad.

If soundness is the concern then Smarty Jones isn't the best choice for that.

Top 10 third crop sires that stand or stood in the United States with % of starters from foals and # of starts per starter.

    Lion Heart - 63% - 8.93
    Speightstown - 72% - 7.16
    Tapit - 70% - 8.81
    Medaglia D'oro - 61% - 7.60
    Candy Ride - 60% - 8.80
    Pleasantly Perfect - 66% - 7.90
    Smarty Jones 59% - 7.85
    Congaree 69% - 10.72
    Chapel Royal 63% - 9.78
    Even The Score 68% - 10.38

59% starters from foals is awful.

7.85 starts per starter is below average.

But if your family likes Smarty, and breeds to race, and you don't have to be all about the best chance to turn a profit, then why not? Have fun doing what you want.

I think Smarty will make a good regional sire. To a response to an earlier post I've had a chance to inspect Smarty and IMO I thought he would drop larger babies so kind of interesting that in his first book 3C wanted bigger mares.

That was the one drawback to breeding to Rahy that they had to deal with, his size.
Funny thing with Rahy, when I visited 3C to inspect Yes Its True they told me that Rahy would sometimes take up to a couple of hours to do his business. He's living the good life now that he's retired from his second job.

Well my mare told me that her date almost fell asleep on top of her and she could not understand why he would not just get on with it.

Forest Command, by Monarchos, will stand at Oak Hill in CA for $2500.
