This is why I don't watch TVG

Okay, I'm sitting here, it's Friday night. On most Friday nights I play Hollywood park, it's my ritual. Usually I play just the track feed but becuase of the Zoo I have right now, I can't do that as I have to sit in the living room, so I have to watch TV, which means I have to watch TVG.

Okay, fast forward to the 7th race. Some chick named Michelle gets on TV and is talking up the longest shot on the board, point of reference, said the horse blew her away on the track.. i wasn't crazy about what I personally saw, I passed the race, but that's not the point Anyway, they throw it back to "sarge" and he says and i quote "that's great but this isn't a pony show" and continues to talk up ellafitz and how she is going to be so tough.

They run the race, Washington bridge wins, point of reference finished maybe 2 back in third, she was defiantly in it to win it, and was 16 to 1 in a 5 hosre field, ellafitz caught a taxi cab when they hit the stretch and finished dead last at 4/5.

That whole exchange, how they treated their employee on air with the blatant disrespect (and she was right), you can have that amateur hour. Give me HRTV please.

Well, I consider 'Sarge' to be a bit of a nutjob anyway.

A lot of it is that machismo bs that TVG is plenty of...Between Sarge and Goldilocks Carothers, Ive jumped ship altogether

Re: This is why I don't watch TVG

I dislike TVG. The commentators get so wrapped up in themselves that they don't pay attention to the horses, and there's way too much machismo.

But they did a great job with "The Works" prior to the BC. It was clear which horses didn't grip the track at Churchill, and that held true on the big day.

I miss HRTV- my provider doesn't carry it. Boo hiss.

Much like real life kids, there is good in bad in both HRTV & TVG. Deal with it. just sayin...

Interesting. I try to stay as far away from TVG as I can ... but I did notice that a lot of the times Christina O. talked to someone in the paddock, and honestly I don't know if those are her choices or who the producers pick, but the horse trained by the person she interviewed very often won or ran really well ... and I'd guess most of the time it was because Christina would say "this horse really looks fabulous today" or something along those lines. It's not always the favorite so I'm guessing it is the paddock person who makes the choice of who to corral for an interview.

The same was always true when HRTV has someone in the paddock. I don't know what Michelle's background is, but I know that every one of the gals on HRTV has some kind of backstretch experience. Obviously, Christina does too.

Isn't that why they hire these people? Because they actually know when a horse looks good, or better than they have in the past, or awful?

I mean, i'm not so bent out of shape becuase the horse ran well or didn't run well, that's besides the point.l you can subscribe to the horse in the flesh angle or not, that's your choice. But man you don't call your fellow employee out on national TV like that, for being right at that lol. You'd never see that crap on HRTV.

Instead of wasting your time here complaining, write the producers. They'd care a little more than we would.

Actually, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't care in the least.

Heehee...this reminded me of the "I wouldn't even ship her to Churchill" comment one of of the HRTV gals said after Zenyatta's last work. Everyone has their duncecap moments. I sure hope Michelle gave Sarge some ribbing about his comment!

On a side note, has anyone else noticed that Ken Rudolph has actually become a decent handicapper? I remember watching him when he first started and he'd ask the dumbest questions. Apparently he's listened and developed his own system- he actually had the superfecta in the Classic (well, he needed to box it but still!)...

You mean Ken "lone speed" Rudolph?

HAHAHA!!! Yep. I guess it's more the thought that he was pretty horrible when he started. I'd also be impressed if a $4000 Claimer from Finger Lakes at least hits the board in an ungraded stakes a Belmont too though.

Michelle Yu is the person in question here, and she does the "paddock picks" for TVG. I would say that, just from casual observation, about 75% of the time the horses she cites finish in the money, regardless of odds. If I were you SOTS, I would hope that Hines, Carothers, et al continue to belittle her picks (if they do, I've never actually seen this although I don't watch racing as much anymore) because she's an excellent judge of who looks good in the paddock, and you may get better odds if any other bettors buy into the downgrading b.s.

The horse she picked the previous race won and paid 10 bucks.

Anyone who reads my posts know I play a big deal on how horses look into my wagering, so you don't have to tell me twice. In fact I like people like Sarge, it gives me good odds. My whole point is just calling out your employee on national TV

It seems every time I tune in they're picking their buddies Mike Smith or Doug O'Neil for everything. They lose their good judgement. If they have any.

Why do you watch TVG - to get their picks? Or to see the races and be entertained?

I do it for the latter...

I think as long as you keep them in context they're a lot of fun...

Yeah - not one of HRTV's best moments. And they have also disagreed vehemently with their fellow commentators on the air. Sometimes I read these threads about how TVG does this and that and HRTV never does that and I wonder if people are even watching the same channels I am. The same stuff happens on both stations. Sarge has always been a PITA blowhard and I doubt that Michele frets about it or gives a damn.

I go back and forth between the two - and actually prefer TVG most of the time. Well, except for Sarge.
