Thanks for posting this. What an eyeful of a horse Slew o' Gold was. He was an even better horse than he showed that year--he had hoof problems after the Whitney and ran with quarter cracks and tender frogs the rest of the year. We bred a mare to him years ago and we visited him many times at Three Chimneys. What a nice treat to hear Cordero talking about him and see him winning the Whitney in a gallop.
Nobody could race ride like Angel. He'd ride his horse and every other horse in the field.

People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance."

Cruget lost his job after Slew lost the Patterson. I believe Jean said slew was "short" or something like that. Don't know if that was "why" he lost the job but Cordero got the mount after saying some very flattering things about him after the race.
And the rest is history....
I remember meeting Cordero in 94 at Saratoga. Upon striking up a brief conversation with him, of course I had to ask him who the best horse he ever rode was. He just gave me a "are you kidding?" look and said something like "you should know who that was". I knew. LOL. (Unlike Cruget, who says Hoist The Flag was better than Slew).
Rachel Alexandra, Zenyatta and Black Caviar.
I remember a remark the Monk made after one of SOG's 4 yo races....He ride like a Cadillac. Just like his daddy.
Cordero is my all time favorite jock. Saratoga was his place. He really loved it there and so did the fans. He seemed to have a smile on his face the entire meet every year. The Spa gave him a break from the downstate hecklers who could be meriless at times.
